As much as we slag of the NHS, it's not as bad as this.....
Hobby Lobby is now free to drop emergency "morning after" pills and intrauterine devices from its workers' health insurance plans -- has given no indication that it plans to stop helping its male employees obtain erectile dysfunction treatments.
The Supreme Court ruled Monday that the craft store chain, owned by evangelical Christians, doesn't have to pay for health care coverage of contraceptives prohibited by its owners' religion.
But pills and pumps that help a man stiffen his penis in preparation for sex are perfectly acceptable. |

it is not a new concept.... it is part of a concerted effort by the republican party and there tea party activists to in effect make abortion in most if not all cases illegal outside of it being a life endangering effect to the potential mother...
in right leaning state legistlative houses, the one thing that has always come up in the agenda's... being limiting abortions to 8 weeks... or defunding health centres that may carry them out.... to making the rules so hard that these places have to close...
if you want some context... look what state congresswoman wendy davis had to do in texas to get this thrown out |

Sets a very dangerous precedent, as something being 'not permitted' by a particular religion (or a particular sect of that religion) is completely open to interpretation. Thank goodness for the NHS.

I love the Daily Show!
But on a slightly serious note, there is a growing number of Tory MPs who believe the UK should be more restrictive on abortions on religious grounds... including our "glorious" Health Minister, Jeremy "rhyming slang has never been more appropriate" Hunt... |

Was very sad when JO left the Daily Show, particularly as he did such a great job as stand-in host (Carlos DANGER!) so hoping his new show will come on UK tv! |

well what can you expect from people who peddle fiction and myth to the stupid, ignorant and gullible as a cover for their autocratic oppressive regimes? God botherers are only interested in controlling other people. The absolute proof of the non-existence of god is religion |

The creeping privatisation of the NHS is a scary thought when you pair whats happening in the US and our own faith schools doing their own thing here in education. There are many republican equivalent religious zealots in government right now who want to restrict womens hard fought rights. The poor in America now struggle to travel to other states in the hope of getting abortions, it is terrible. Religion has no place in government run or controlled services. |

Nothing to add to thread but just returned from 2 fab weeks in California
Can confirm
San Francisco is awesome
Hollywood is shite n tacky
The beer is piss weak
We had more fun on 4th than they did (us Brits can party harder)
Driving is easy n chilled compared to here (even rush hour LA is easy compared with the M6)
Our public toilets in airports are a disgrace compared to theirs
Californians are fit, healthy and arty plus polite
Their food is now as good as ours
We want to return permanently .... But the healthcare would be an issue in old age methinks
There ya go....thread back on track |

funny enough the NHS has always been a political football in US politics.... if you ever follow healthcare debates, you would be surprised at
the Democrats always looking lovingly at it as something they would love to introduce as it fits their idea of the poorest not being left behind....
the republicans look at the NHS as some sort of devil making Socialist/communist healthcare system
you could call obamacare the middle ground for now, which actually is more akin to something like BUPA, but other than the gun lobby, the healthcare lobby is probably one of the most powerful in us politics which is why it has been screamed about...
since abortion in effect is legal on a national basis and isn't going to made illegal anytime soon, the plans of the republican led states where they have the power at local levels, is to make the rules on it so hard and so narrow that it in effect makes it impossible for someone to get one, especially on the governments money.....
