Better in the studio than live

Titz Towers, North Notts

I've just been watching some of Blondie doing live gigs recorded back in the late 70's and odds bodkins, but they don't half sound better on studio albums. It could be the recording, it could be the kit, it could be they all had too many gobstoppers before performing, or perhaps they just need a bit of studio tweaking. Johnny Cash, on the other hand, sounds great in Live at San Quentin.

Who else is far better on one than t'other?

Katy Perry sounds atrocious live!

Kings of Leon, dolly Parton and The Script are all much better live than in the studio.

If it's a really good band, then 'live', actually at the event is by far the best but live on your own tv just loses all the dynamics, IMHO, - plus the sound is only as good as your tv speakers.

By all accounts they were very out of tune and unskilled in using their instruments. They were very much a punk band polished for the masses.

TBH on recent inter_iews (bearing in mind they had proper drug issues and were broke by the early 80's) that I've seen Debbie Harry comes across as a right self congratulating arrogant t*at.

'Call me' is a rocking tune though

Have seen The Stranglers (with Hugh Cornwell) a couple of times and they sounded exactly the same live as they did on vinyl.

Saw Meatloaf at Donington one year and he was crap

Dolly Parton mimes so it's not really a live event.

I've seen Blondie live and thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't really want a band to sound the same live as on record or I might as well sit in my bedroom and listen them.

I love Dolly and think she puts on a fantastic show but even she admits there is a fair degree of lip syncing at her shows.

I'm not disputing that she mimes some shows, or that some songs during this concert were mimed. But she sang at least half live, and the ones she did were much better than studio recordings.

Sam Smith is amazing live, as are Mudford and Sons, and Imagine Dragons. All superior to their studio recordings.

As long as you enjoy the show that's all that counts. I would love to see one of her concerts but keep missing them.

Seen Mumford and sons and really enjoyed then

Queen their live shows had energy and many of their songs come alive when they play live. Saw them at Wembley 86 but haven't seen the new line up with Adam Lambert. Im sure theyre good but it just wouldnt be the same.

Simple Minds and Muse both have great studio albums and they're the two best live bands I've ever seen, Muse edging it as the best live band I've had the pleasure to hear

I haven't had the pleasure of seeing Simple Minds live but their '89? album 'Street Fighting Years' brings back so many awesome memories.

So, it's one of my most precious possessions!

Leonard Cohen

Johnny cash

And Neil diamond have been my favourite concerts. All are better live than on record. There is just something about their performances and the interpretations of the songs that just can't be captured on vinyl.

Most of the (punk) music I'm into sounds much better live than in a studio, and most of my favourite albums are live recordings too.

Surprisingly cypress hill seen at Reading 93 ish sticks in my memory as being an amazing live act though that could have been down to the hits from the bong
