Yes I am so what pisses me off?

Nobody seems to give a toss about pride in their country until the world cup or some other big footy comp comes around. Then you have hoards of people flying the cross of St George from cars, houses, damnit even wearing it as shorts or shirts.

Its not a footy emblem for Gods Sake. If you have pride in your country fly the flag from your house all the time like the Americans do, otherwise find something else to show your support for footy.

"And the England team represents England in the biggest sports event the world has in less than a week. Why should you limit people being patriotic even if its a sports way?"

Like that answer...and surely we wouldn't want flags about all the time like the americans! So let the footy fans be patriotic during the World Cup, and if the OP wants to fly a flag at a different time for a different reason, then they should do so!

i got stopped flying from car though when working on heathrow airport as loose flags could cause damage to jet engines as flying debris but i fly out of season too!.

The old Labour Gestapo would have frowned upon anyone flying a flag that demonstrated English patriotism but I'm relieved to see that the new government has no such agenda and flagpoles are appearing all over England, erected euphoriously by English men and women who are relishing in their newfound freedom to express how proud they are to be English without the fear of being labelled a racist. (so long as it's within council guidelines and doesn't pose a threat to public safety).

******************************

Oh, to be in England

Now that April's there,

And whoever wakes in England

Sees, some morning, unaware,

That the lowest boughs and the brushwood sheaf

Round the elm-tree bole are in tiny leaf,

While the chaffinch sings on the orchard bough

In England - now!

~

And after April, when May follows,

And the whitethroat builds, and all the swallows

Hark! where my blossomed pear-tree in the hedge

Leans to the field and scatters on the clover

Blossoms and dewdrops - at the bent spray's edge

That's the wise thrush; he sings each song twice over,

Lest you should think he never could recapture

The first fine careless rapture!

~

And though the fields look rough with hoary dew,

All will be gay when noontide wakes anew

The buttercups, the little children's dower, -

Far brighter than this gaudy melon-flower!

It has never been illegal in England to fly the flag of St George, it's a myth dreamed up by the Daily Mail and the Daily Express.

I am surprised that people ever believed it had been made illegal, why are some people taken in so easily?

Quote from Daily Mirror:

In February this year, taxi drivers in Southampton were threatened with having their licences suspended by the city council if they did not remove St George's Cross stickers and the slogan "English-speaking driver" from their cabs.

~

Quote from News & Star:

A Carlisle man has been ordered to take down his St George’s cross – because he tied it to a council-owned lamp-post.

Ian Wildey with his flagIan Wildey, 57, hoisted the flag up the lamp-post outside his home, in Levens Drive, Morton, last week in honour of St George’s Day.

But, on Monday, Mr Wildey said that council workers turned up with a cherry picker and demanded that he take the flag down.

Carlisle City Council said that Mr Wildey, a former soldier who now works as a taxi driver in the city, was asked to remove the flag because he hadn’t asked for permission to put it up.

Mr Whiley explained, "I’ve lived here for 25 years and I’ve been putting it up all that time and I’ve never been told to take it down before. I put lights up at Christmas time and we raised £600 for the hospice this year."

~

Quote from Daily Star:

In Worksop, Notts, police ordered a woman to take flags down from her balcony after complaints from people from other countries.

Chris Gregory, also from Worksop, said police in Lincoln told him to remove flags from his car.

~

Quote from Metro.co.uk:

Ahead of the last World Cup in 2006, firemen in Barking were told to remove a St George's Cross flag from their fire station after erecting it without permission.

There were also reports of children being sent home from school for wearing clothing displaying the England flag.

~

Quote from Bannerbox News Archive:

man who wanted to show his support for the England football team by blanketing the front of his home with St George's Cross flags has been told to take them down for health and safety reasons.

Karl Staples created the display outside his home in Weston, Southampton as England's footballers prepare to compete in the upcoming World Cup. But council health and safety officers said the flags could present a fire hazard and ordered that he remove them.

The 20-year-old Tesco employee said it was just the kind of support that the national team needed. “I just want to get people in the mood – I’m definitely in the mood, I can’t wait, so let’s get ready. If the players see stuff like that it’s going to boost them on a bit, but if they don’t they’re going to think ‘there’s no-one behind us’.”

He said he was amazed that on the two occasions he's been warned to take them down – once following an officer's visit and once in a phone call – the flags have been called racist.

Southampton City Council's housing boss, Phil Williams, refuted that, however, and said the council wanted to minimise risk. They said they did not want a repeat of the fire at Shirley Towers in April, which claimed the lives of two firefighters.

So all these reports are false huh?

something we shjould do here for sure!,i fly flag on car all year round and instead of plain tee shirts wear st england footy shirt with 3 lions on or st george flag because i am english and proud!.

if migrants can walk round town centres in native dress i wil wear my footy shirt!.

i think if labour had won another term in government st george flag flying would have been banned!,we would only be allowed to fly the neutral euoropean flag!,our national identity was being watered down by labour and they wanted the word english to be replaced by "european".

The erection of flags of any kind above the height of 5.5 metres has nothing to do with law, it has everything to do with the Town and Country Planning Act of 1947.

Flying flags from public hire vehicles or Hackney Carriage licensed vehicles comes under the Act of 1990. It has nothing to do with racism but is done so on the basis of advertising.

You need planning permission to erect a flag above a size of 18"x12" on a commercial building in the United KIngdom (1990 Town and Country Planning Act.

The Union Jack was from 1973, not permitted to be flown on any government or private commercial building except on official days like the Queen's birthday etc. or when the Queen is visiting a public building.

I and my fellow shopkeepers are planning to fly Union Jacks, the RAF and Navy ensigns and the Army flag on our shops to honour our serving troops on 26th June (Armed Forces Day), we had to obtain planning permission to do so because the flags are 5'x3' and are on commercial buildings.

So let us not get planning laws and laws appertaining to the Royal Family mixed up with political correctness.

Incidentally Gordon Brown was the first Prime Minister since Ted Heath to fly the St Georges Cross above Downing Street in 2009 on St Georges Day.

"Incidentally Gordon Brown was the first Prime Minister since Ted Heath to fly the St Georges Cross above Downing Street in 2009 on St Georges Day."

Did he seek permission from Westminster Council before doing so... or was it simply understood that Brown would do it properly so no permission was needed?

You are being extremely niave if you believe that all of these antiflag waving incidents are to do with laws and H & S issues. They are using the law as a smokescreen to enforce their will upon an unwilling population.

Why aren't ALL trees removed from the sides of roads & carriageways as they present a clear danger to pedestrains and motorists in high winds?

Why are banners allowed to be draped across bridges when there is a clear risk of them breaking loose and falling onto the windscreen of cars passing beneath them (or kids cutting them loose).

I had to smile at this, sorry but its a little a amusing.

First i think everyone should be patriotic if they feel fit and to an extent if you do not support the country you live in then its somewhat strange.

The Amusing bit though is the fact your proud your patriotic but are not pleased that others are. They may well be so over a football team but i would presume most English football fans are patriotic full stop. The football thing is an outlet thats all. Flags on cars is a bit of fun. Its an expression of support like the red nose day putting them on cars etc. Now if you had been a green supporter and was complaining about the flag drag factor on cars you would have had a good point for energy conservation

It's a funny thing, this flag flying business.

Only last night I was out walking the dogs and passed a bunch of about 6 flag flying cars which were parked in a supermarket car park close to where we live.

On the way back, the knobheads had left the car park leaving their debris from McDonalds stewn all over the place.

Now we can see that these goons are proud of their country ..

When I see behaviour like this it makes me cringe to be English or British whatever you care to call it

No you have a point there and i think a good one. To support the place of birth or where your brought up isn't a bad thing but if Italy are playing say Brazil do they support Italy because they live there and feel empathy or do they support Brazil as they prefer any other than Italy?

The ex pat thing is always a funny issue. You can't forget your heritage but you have to have some empathy for the country you live in surely.

I'm not British but do think that people should be allowed to fly their flag to support their team and country.

What annoys me is having it put on dozens of supermarket brands purely as a cynical marketing ploy. Tesco has the three Lions logo and St George's flag all over the floor. Support your country and team by walking all over them??

Walk down any high street or past any pub this week and you will see St George Cross flags and bunting being hung up and flown for the World Cup, I must have seen over fifty cars yesterday on my drive into work with those england flags on the car windows, anyone would think it has become an imprisonable crime to do so....

do you think in the approach to the world cup that it will be any different in france, germany, holland italy or south africa?.

no of course it wont!,people all over the world will be behind their own nations team!,it's just that some nerds here think it funny in a warped mind to throw fun at flag fliers re: penis size, but i see lots of ladies driving cars to supermarket or on school run flying the flag from cars too!.

So do I get an apology from you for assuming that because I live in Devon I come from Devon?

"

am sorry for that assumption and i do apologise.

My mother was half English

and I'm half English too

I'm a great big bundle of culture

tied up in the red, white and blue

I'm a fine example of your Essex man

I'm well familiar with the Hindustan

'Cause my neighbors are half English too

My breakfast was half English

and so am I you know

I had a plate of Marmite soldiers

washed down with a cappuccino

And I'll have a veggie curry about once a week

The next day a fry it up as "Bubble 'N' Squeak'

'Cause my appetite's half English

and I'm half English too

Britannia she's half English

She speaks Latin at home

St. George was born in the Lebanon

How he got here I don't know

And those three lions on his shirt

they never sprung from England's dirt

Them lions are half English

And I'm half English too

Bliiy Bragg is one of these idiots who deny that the English are a people (like most members of the last government). It's OK to be Scots, Welsh, Northern Irish or Southern Irish, but it's not OK to call yourself English. All these other nations have their own parliaments or assemblies, but not us.

Keep flying the flag, be proud you're English. cecil Rhodes said "to be born English is to win first prize in the lottery of life". All the rest are just jealous of us!

Sorry but Billy Bragg says nothing of the sort, what he advocates (and he is absolutely correct) is that as a nation Britain is made up of all sorts over the last Two thousand years.

As 'English' peoples we are made up of Celts, Saxons, Vikings, French, Romans, Germans and god knows what else.

Who can claim to be 'Pure bred English' on here?

"Yes I am so what pisses me off?

Nobody seems to give a toss about pride in their country until the world cup or some other big footy comp comes around. Then you have hoards of people flying the cross of St George from cars, houses, damnit even wearing it as shorts or shirts.

Its not a footy emblem for Gods Sake. If you have pride in your country fly the flag from your house all the time like the Americans do, otherwise find something else to show your support for footy.

(From not a footy fan )

I disagree with you big fella.

I've yet to travel outside the UK during the European or World cup and come across a group of Brits living in another country that didn't fly their national flags and support their home team and not the country they live in.

My sister lives in Milan, has done for 25 years, longer than she lived in the country of her birth England.

Any national game her husband has his flag she has hers: always cheers for England, I don't think that odd!

You can't forget your heritage but you have to have some empathy for the country you live in surely."

My brother-in-law is Italian...goes back generations. He natually supports his home team, and should it come down to Italy v Brazil my sister would cheer for the Brazilians (just for the hell of it) and my brother-in-law Italy: naturally!!

So all of these Patriotic sports fans are flying the flag for the England team and the country then?

Suppose the England team had its own flag, lets say a red flag with 3 yellow rings on it. The country would now be awash with that flag wouldn't it?

Nope the flag flying exercise has nothing to do with being patriotic to your country.....just its mediocre footy team.

You could say the same about any nation, not just the English. If you go back far enough you'll find Romans were made up of peoples from many different tribes (Etruscans, Raetians, Ligurians, Greeks, and Illyrians among others).

A modern 'pure-bred' English person is one who's grandparents are ALL English, as in they were born here. For my part, I'm am 1/4 Welsh 3/4 English, and that's good enough for me, but I do have Irish connections going back past my grandparents and my surname is French (but I have absolutely no allegiances with anything French, just to clear that up lol)

DNA studies are beginning to show that the English are mostly

Brythonic (Celtic) in origin, in fact the Scots are in DNA research terms less likely in many cases to be pure Celts than the English.

The Cornish claim to be pure Celts is also a phallacy, DNA tests amongst the Cornish have found them less likely to be pure Celts than those born in the Home Counties of England.

The rule of thumb in DNA research is 25 generations (don't ask me why)

Er, not quite true Jane.

Well, not according to the book 'Face of Britain' by Dr Robin McKie anyway.

The DNA studies as part of the on-going Human Genome Project have shown that all white, native-born indigenous Britons share approx. 50% of their DNA with the original hunter-gatherer settlers who arrived here before the waters rose approx. 9'000yrs BP.

However, the English strand is distinct from the 'Celtic' DNA. It is basically identical to the DNA from what is now Denmark, in fact it is impossible to differentiate the 'Saxon' & the 'Dane' because they are essentially the same people. According to the book the 'Celtic*' DNA is pretty much extinct amongst those English without a Welsh/Scots/Irish family connection.

In fact, the lowland Scots share a near-identical DNA base with their Southern Neighbours, the modern Scots Sassenach is (so i understand) a Highland word to denote the lowlanders who are in the main descended from the Anglo-Saxon settlers who pushed the Pictish peoples out of the area.

The North-East Highlanders themselves carry a distinct Norwegian gene from the Norse invaders - the Orkneys have no male 'Celtic' DNA whatsoever as the Norse killed all the males and took the women as wives/slaves etc.

*'Celts' also never existed, it is a term created by a Welsh Nationalist in the mid C18th called Edward Llyudd. He took his cue from the Classics & took a Bronze-Age Greek derogatory term meant to denote the people who lived inland from the Ionian Sea (Keltoi=barbarian) and used it erroneously.

Might be a bit off the trend here, but whilst I love England in theory, I'm certainly not patriotic about our country as it is.

Chavs on every street corner, bus stops getting bricked in left right and centre, old people afraid to leave their homes, underage drinking, vandalism... add to that a mass degree of xenophobia and racism amongst large sections of our society, exacerbated by ethnic minorities excluding themselves from the British way of life...

It's hard to be patriotic about something that only exists in theory really. England as we know it in our minds died about 20-30 years ago.

But for the decent English (including minorities, I'm no racist!) who live here, I'm proud of us and fully endorse waving the flag for who you believe you are rather than what we as a country actually are. It isn't helped when a Polish bus driver kicks you off the bus for wearing an England shirt, but ah well.

This is borne out of his distaste for Oliver Letwin, the King of the fiddlers.

Off to Scotland again tomorrow to remind all my Scottish friends what is about to begin and before you all go on about we haven't won anthing yet, we have certainly won more than the Scots and as one boss once said to me

It's better to be a 'has been' than a never was

This is an easy one for me though as two of my colleagues who share an office come from either side of the big Scottish devide, one has blue mug for his coffee the other green and how often do I mix them up when I make the coffee?

There is so little national pride these days, it’s nice when something comes along (whether that be the footie, a sporting event or whatever) which brings a nation (or at least part of it) together ….. showing support for our national team, optimism, a sense of unity, something to share…. it’s all good.

yyyyyyyyaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnn!!

most of the immigrants round here made their own jobs doin the shit that none of us wanted to do or in jobs that the good ole british unemployed wanted to take or in jobs that were relevant to their culture! you go on and on and on and on about this but you never highlight any of the positives that have came from it or what period of mass immigration that you object to! all this with high unemployment i dont know if its maybe just my attitude but i was out of work there with the uni finishin up for summer break and i now have 2 jobs yes it may just have been luck and my timing, but i now have employment! granted its not the best of wages one on minimum wage one just above it but its a job! there also another 5 vacancies where i am because they cant find staff willing to work 12 hr shifts caring for the elderly what does that say??? its easy to blame the minority when your in the majority but the rot in this country didnt just start with the immigrants it was there before x

Well said .... We love being welsh and use any excuse to celebrate that fact. I've only ever been to one football game with mr serens (never again he said) so I don't know anything about football, but as others have said it shouldn't be just about sport, our english neighbours seem to have a general identity crisis so come on you lot over the water mwah xxx

Have you got ANY English in you at all?

No wishy .... well not on a regular basis anyway

You know what's coming next, don't you?

Shall I say it? Do I have to say it? lol "

all over the place

I think the right to fly the flag is important if you wish to ,i have seen people of all races rallying around the England flag when a soccer competition is on ..and that can only be good in terms of unity.

To me, the slow drip feed erosion of our influence as a global power seems more important than flag flying. To me the greatest hit to our independant nation hood was the denial of a referendum on the leakagage of yet more powers to Europe found in the 131,000 pages of the Lisbon treaty. Both major parties promised us one but reneged, treating us as idiots not to be trusted. You can not form a United Europe without the will of all the peoples.

It is in my opinion the biggest Betrayal ever perpetrated by the political elite on its people.

No manifesto commitment ,no promised referendum ,No say, for any of us !

its a village

People will hammer me for this, but if you are all so proud of being british and all this flag flying, but take so little care about the surroundings you live in. People know how to fly the flag ,but dont know where the nearest bins are to dispose their rubbish or take bags with them to pick up after their dogs.

I am German by the way and proud of it without flying the flag but then I pick up after my dogs and put my rubbish in the bin. lol Go on then hammer me

My dog is dead and I don't throw litter on the floor (or out of the car window).

If there are no bins or ashtrays when I am outside having a smoke I at least try and flick the end down a drain... does that allow me to show some patriotic support for the England squad?

I dunno they may have a point.... after all, look at Spain and the immigration problem over there…. bloody Johnny-foreigners buying all the cheap accommodation so locals can’t afford a nice house… frying stinky chips… turning all the traditional bars into ‘pubs’ with Sunday lunches... bringing their families over for cheap holidays and reducing the income of those who rely on the tourist trade renting rooms.... terrible state of affairs!

Ok it has to go........please don't keep coming into ordinary threads and turning them into something that is bordering on racial.

I am going to shut this thread and start another for anyone who wants to be patriotic and get behind the English team in the World cup.

Please don't turn up on there spouting about immigrants.
