Apparently there is some big sports competition thing about to start and i was just wondering how many of the players will actually sing the National Anthem at the start of the matches

for me i think they should be made to sing ad should be penalised if they dont - they are representing our country after all

As long as they are proficient at the sport they are representing the country at, I really don't give a toss whether they can sing or not.

If they want to sing, then join a chior and see if they can win a singing contest

not saying it has to be tuneful - cant hear them anyway

i just think that they should at least mouth the words or something - show they are proud of representing their country

its one of those things... because of the amount of passports I have... i have represented 3 different countries in 3 different sports (american, Irish, UK)... so the looks i get from people who don't know me in o'neills when i sign the irish anthem in gaelic does raise eyebrows....

i must say that i am very skeptical of anyone who is not proud of the place they were born.

The lack of pride in this country sickens me as i am first and formost

proud to be British, English, a Yorkshire man, a West Yorkshire man, and most of all a Wakey lad. it all depends who i am talking to

If they sing it as good as some of those hideous football songs of years gone by, I'd sooner they didn't bother ....

most counties sing about the lovly mountains and rivers etc , but the english anthem is all god save the queen etc etc etc , its enough to make you puke

people at the top of there sport be it football , or throwing the javelin at the olympics are there for themselves , trying to be the best

not to sing about saving some old crow , and sending her victorious , just because she is the next in line of a family of cut throat thugs , who only got where they are by violence

thank god we dont have to stand up in the cinema anymore singing that shit when the film ends

Doesn't bother me if they sing or not, along as they show respect to the anthem and the oppositions as well.

Question, we all know which part of the UK has qualified for the finals, and the anthem that will be used. so that gets me wondering, what is the UK National Anthem?

It's interesting that you put British then English. I see myself as an Englishman who is part of the British Commonwealth. I never state 'British' on any form where I am asked my nationality. God Save the Queen is a British anthem and if England are playing then Land of Hope & Glory should be the song we sing. I never sing God Save the Queen, as it is not purely English, although I do support it as our anthem at the Olympics as we compete as a British team.

You are all forgetting that most of them (when it comes to football at least) don't have enough brain cells to remember the lyrics, in fact they probably don't between the lot of them!

We need an English national anthem! The Scots and the Welsh always sing theirs before 6 nation rugby matches, but all we have is the British one, which is supposed to apply to them, but which they never use.

I think its a really poor show when they're mumbling and pretending to know the words when clearly they don't

They look like dickheads when the camera pans across them

I refer you to my post above regarding Land of Hope & Glory.

Lol oh I agree!

Personally I don't care if they sing or not as long as they're "respectful" when it's played.

I remember when Daley Thompson was on the podium after winning the decathlon: whisling and acting the arse: I wasn't impressed!

My first language is Welsh and I learnt English as a second language.

The Welsh National Anthem is one of the first things I remember learning at Primary School and Always sing it with real passion.

Supporting or not supporting the Queen is a choice thing many do but why not support England as you share social benefits, economic growth and much more with England. Why not support your neighbour?

I wouldnt support england because i am welsh.

I dont sing God Save the Queen because i sing Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau.

Just like if i was a portsmouth footy fan i wouldnt support southampton.

Or like a Man U fan wouldnt support Liverpool.

I celebrate anyone who is proud of their country.

I would say you have a point but God save the Queen is a British national anthem not an English one. And at some point the Prince of Wales, will i assume succeed to the throne be it a good or bad thing. With Wales being part of Great Britain why the negative on God save the queen? I understand not supporting the English it s a choice thing but when it comes to the Olympics with a British team do you not support them?

Quite so-and as far as I'm concerned I'm both Welsh and British-not much time for the Nats. In my (Welsh speaking) primary school we were taught to be proud of both-and for that matter to regard the Queen as Head of State for all of us. I do understand why the English would like their own song-but they cant have "Land of Hope and Glory" though-thats Britain too!

"And did those feet in ancient time.

Walk upon Englands mountains green:

And was the holy Lamb of God,

On Englands pleasant pastures seen!

And did the Countenance Divine,

Shine forth upon our clouded hills?

And was Jerusalem builded here,

Among these dark Satanic Mills?

Bring me my Bow of burning gold;

Bring me my Arrows of desire:

Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold!

Bring me my Chariot of fire!

I will not cease from Mental Fight,

Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:

Till we have built Jerusalem,

In Englands green & pleasant Land"

Fair enough! I love that-and always gives me goose bumps-even though I'm Welsh. But so does the Marseillaise!

Oh God! No! We can't have 'Jerusalem' as the English national anthem... it's the unofficial anthem of the Women's Institute and the National Union of Suffrage Societies... can you imagine the backlash from millions of down-trodden women moaning that football has hijacked their fookin song!!

one of the best things in the world is hockey play off time when before the games the canadians play there national anthem.. look it up on youtube, it is something as an american you get really jealous of.....

its the same for most countries across the land.. most anthems are stirring stuff... the uk anthem is just a bit "limp" in comparison...

I guess I am pretty bed as I do not really like either my own country's national sport(although I did stay up to watch them win gold in the olympics) and I do not like the sport of where I have ended up either...shame on me...
