it's a term that people use (not always in a flattering way) to describe sex that is what they consider not kinky or "normal", it is also used to describe people as in "oh he's vanilla".
Some people even use it to describe people who don't swing.
I think if you need a word to differentiate between kinky sex and normal sex you just aren't doing it right   |

it's used everywhere, most in gaming where you play the game as it ships, rather then add expansion packs etc.
the term 'plain old vanilla' is used a lot
though there's nothing wrong with sex without kink at all! |

Just like with ice cream, it means the standard stuff you get unless you ask for something special.
In bdsm it means non-bdsm sex. If a bdsm club says the dress code is vanilla, it means your normal clothes. Don't turn up in a latex gimp suit.
In swinging it means non-swinging. "My vanilla friends have no idea" etc. |
