All the bits get numbered and are put back in the same place each time it is moved.

What is art?

Art is a commodity - no more no less. Can be bought and sold just like a barrel of oil

No

Some of the finest objects of art(in my mind)depict items or scenes of horror or sadness, To me art in its purest form is transferring to a medium..Canvas or clay a lifelike image of the subject

The purpose of art is primarily to provoke emotional response .

Money? "Forget about it.." (name that movie).

Money is only an IOU for services rendered. It's not actually worth anything. Art is worth something...even a crummy old bed...it's worth more than money. Money is printable...you want more of it...just print up a new batch...old moth eaten manky bed is unique

You go down the bank and ask for a mortgage. They agree just as long as you commit to spend the next 20 years of your life paying it back with interest. You agree, thinking that they're gonna reach into their pockets and give you their hard earned cash and therefore you owe that money back. Instead they merely get on the phone and print up a new batch for you. That money didn't exist before you 'borrowed' it...now suddenly it exists and you supposedly owe it back.

You think a lousy bed selling for a bomb is a joke...it doesn't even register compared to the joke that is money

But the point is that until Tracey came up with it, no one else did it. You could have done it but you didn't (and I didn't either!)

Central

My bed and dirty sheets are available for a lot less. I need a couple of days to complete this piece of outstanding unique art, and cash up front is essential. It can be customised within reason. Bids start at £10000. I can be thrown in for an extra fee. Art for me is communication and expression.

So basically art is worthless because its value is dictated by something that doesnt exist.

"Over simplistic analysis of economics"

Not at all, Economics is very simple, Based on household management just complicated by the modern day "Experts" who earn their living by thinking up new theories and projections.

I get it that a lot of people on here like art that is realistic, expressive, beautiful, skillful, and perhaps tells some kind of worthwhile story. But today all those things are generally seen as belonging to provincial art i.e. the pretty paintings you can buy in tourist resorts.

Whether you appreciate it or not, contemporary art is primarily philosophy more than anything else. It uses objects and experiences to explore concepts and that's what it's primarily about...philosophy in objects rather than words.

Today, what looks like art is probably mere craftsmanship...whilst what doesn't look like art is probably art. Unfortunately craftmanship in an age of mass production is almost worthless. A friend I knew used to make bespoke jewelry...but she simply couldn't compete with the price of what was coming out of China...so she gave up.

Why is the bed art? Because the gallery system, the art critics, the art historians, the collectors, and the fellow artists say it is. Most contemporary artists find that state of affairs somewhat fraudulent...and that's why so many of them take the piss out of it by making shit and calling it art Believe it or not that's actually true

"Over simplistic analysis of economics"

Money used to be connected to the gold standard...now it's just worth whatever everyone thinks it's worth. Countries straight jacket themselves to pay their debts back, only to have the banks turn round and print off a whole load more of money out of thin air. I'd say that's bigger bullshit than anything in the art world

Art is a subjective concept. All art elicits a response, be it positive or negative. This piece succeeds on both levels.

Ooopps I presumed you were refering to my remark that many contemporary artists are actually taking the piss out of the art world...which is true. But you may have been commenting on a previous post by someone else about economics...sorry if that was a case of mixed wires lol

"Art is a subjective concept. All art elicits a response, be it positive or negative. This piece succeeds on both levels."

I agree with you Ligeia but I think the majority of recent art isn't really as much interested in reactions and emotions as it is ideas. The main thrust of Tracey's work, imo, is about the tabloid culture we have of prying into celebrities private lives and wanting to expose their secrets, turn them into a scandal, and use and abuse celebrities as tools for gossip, regardless of how awful an experience they've been through. She has given up her bed, her tent, and various other things, deliberately to play into this sordid tabloid culture of celebrity exposure, freely detailing abuses in her own past so as to deliberately generate salacious gossip, and used her own celebrity to play along with it at the same time. Pretty fucking clever when you sit back and think about it.

The objects themselves lack much merit...it's the concepts they explore, the philosophy that they unravel. They hold a mirror up to our current culture's thirst for voyeuristic celebrity scandal. That's the way I see it lol

Art is fame, there were and are many great artists in all fields from music dance to painting and sculpture, who only manage to scrape a living often with the help of a day job.

Very few become famous and earn good money for their work, to those who achieve success I wish good luck, a very lucky few will achieve immortality e.g. Rembrandt, Mozart etc.

Most will fail or be happy as giftshop artists and pub musicians, to them I give thanks as they give me the most joy.
