Apparently soccer is now the 2nd most popular and participated in sport for under 35s in the USA. Do you think there is any chance they might now start calling it football like the rest of the world??

Early predicition for tonight, USA to make the last 8 and then make the semis....

No because they already have a national sport called football. Would be too confusing.

'gets my goat' isn't a saying I've heard before. Apparently it's an old American saying.

The word soccer originates from the 1880's as a contraction of the word association in Britain - I'll get my coat

They can call it what they like seeing as they are better at it than us.

Why do they call american football.....football when it is mainly played with the hands? Logical thing to call it would have been handball.

More logical to call soccer football as it is mainly played with the feet.

Apparently in the US it stems from goats being placed with racehorses (to keep them calm) and the saying is reference to people removing the goat to unsettle the horses so they would run badly.

In Yorkshire it originated after leisure centres were closed.

Australia passed a law a few years ago allowing people to call it football and not soccer.

Perhaps that's why the Socceroos went home early...

In time it will fully take off and be a success much like womens football is over there, I could be wrong but they fill decent stadiums I think and Im sure they were number 1 for a while.

When the mens team do they could be amazing, huge population to pick a decent squad and plenty of money to put it all in place - they have kind of started.

Im not sure on their rankings now but they suprised me when Ive looked before. They quite often get out of the group stage and its right, they dont take it that serious.

'football' is simply a generic name for any ball game where a goal is scored by kicking a ball through a goal mouth. That covers both codes of rugby, Aussie rules, Anerican football, gaelic football and probably several more variations.

'soccer' is more correct in that it refers to the specific sport of Association Football.

That's what wiki says anyway.

I suspect that editorial may have been entered by someone in the USA!

Why do the Yanks have a MLB (Major League Baseball) World Series when they are the only feckers that play in it

They have the world series because it was originally sponsored by The World newspaper I believe.

It's nothing to do with it being a world championship.
