Hubby has been taking fluxetine for approx 9 months, which has helped his depression but a side effect is his sex drive is at zero. We normally have a very exciting and varied sex life but lately if I can get him turned on its pretty much vanilla sex and that's it

I've asked him to go to the docs and see if he can review the medication but he can't get an appointment for another 3 weeks!

Has anyone had any experience of this? Is this a common side effect for all anti depressants?

It's common yes but depression in itself affects libido. I found mine went the opposite way one I got physically better but antidepressants make you feel mentally and physically tired l. If he has a physical problem with obtaining or maintaining an erection there may be something he can take. Or a different medication. I had Fluoxetine and then Paroxetine

Yes certain types of medication can affect sex drive or difficulty in achieving orgasm, common in anti depressant medications.

Perhaps discuss with the GP

He had no problems in achieving or maintaining an erection, he just isn't "in the mood". He has no desire to do it, and as daft as it seems I can't help but worry that it's me (insecure I know).

Another 3 weeks isn't long to wait surely his health is more important than physical satisfaction after all. Anyway best of luck to him depression isn't nice at all an nobody deserves it.

no it isn't you. It might be better for both of you if you discussed this between yourselves, it must be difficult for you both but I can only guess how he might feel being discussed on here.

It's not you,it's his brain not functioning normally. I'd rather have no sex drive than suffer severe depression again

He's sitting next to me as I write, so he's happy with me asking on the forums.

As someone who suffered severe post natal depression I understand his health come first before sex, however he is very conscious that his sex drive is low. Despite my assurances that it isn't an issue for me, he feels so anxious that it won't return whenever he comes off the tablets (hence my post).

The doctor never mentioned that this could be a side effect, he has just been go ogling, and of course that never makes you feel better lol!

And of course he cut ask friends/colleagues etc because he's a man and they don't like discussing this type of thing lol.

He should have had advice about coming off them and regular visits to his doctor at least. He should go to his gp at least. They don't know everything but he can ask for more help

Any clue what that is ?

35 yrs as a nurse

Chronic depression x I don't claim to be an expert but making random statements about prescription drugs is wrong

We are all individuals and our body's react differently

It's frustrating because you stop taking them for a few days and start to come alive again then feel ill and have to take them again. It's either all or nothing

of course they affect everyone differently. It wasn't a random statement,it was one based on mine and quite a few others experiences

Lifes to short to tussle

And like I'd say it all on the public forum.

I work every day, I have a child to raise and I'm a carer too.

Without my ads I would just stop, just like I would if I broke my leg or stopped taking thyroxine

The SSRI meds have sexual side effects for many people but how an individual responds is unique to them. They can respond totally differently to another med in the same group, so switching is a good approach. It would mean gradual reduction, which can be painful. As someone else states, his condition will also probably affect his sex needs too. Id target all stress factors that may be in his life, and aim for a streamlined life, as simple as can be, as far as possible - though still satisfying for him. You can visit other doctors if youre in another area, for example, and there are some drop in centres etc that may help you get a quicker response. Doctors get paid well to see visitors, so it is a useful avenue to explore if youre visiting family, friends etc away from your home. But he could start withdrawing from his medication prior to an appointment, meaning he could start a new med, if prescribed, at an earlier point. Another thing to consider is writing to your doctor, as they will often do phone appointments. Depending on his dose level he may need to gradually taper his dose level down before stopping. Reduction and stopping can cause withdrawal symptoms so you would need to be aware of this. Finally there is no guarantee that an alternative med will be better - but another med may work at a lower dose effectively for him that does not affect him so badly or not at all. It isnt that this med is definitely causing this, but there is a real possibility that it is, so some caution is appropriate, as your sex life is important. Finally, suicidal thoughts are possible from this med, including withdrawal so it is really important that his doctor is informed and involved as much as possible. Another doctor will notify yours of any course of action. You could also have a chat with a pharmacist, as they are medically trained but medication experts - you could them be more fully informed about the possibilities. Good luck to you both!
