Actually they do, it really is a part of dog psychology/behaviour. Dogs, rather Wolves are one of the most successful pack-cooperative predators on the planet. To be a successful predator silence and good communication with other pack-mates is key. To this end the canine has evolved an acute ability to read and display body language.
In the world of dog training/management it is said that ‘A dog mirrors its owner’ and they do and this is also one reason why it has been thought that dogs have some kind of psychic ability. You’ll often hear people say, ‘That dog knows its going for a walk before I do’ dogs actually read very subtle body language signs that us humans don’t know we are displaying.
And so, if the dog owner is excited the dog gets excited. If the owner is feeling threatened the dog goes on the defence etc. The owner doesn’t like someone the dog won’t like them either.
So the answer to your question is dogs actually do mirror their owners.

Yes… although I hate the phrase ‘dog whispering’ its more along those lines than actually training. But what it really is, is understanding the dogs psychology/natural behaviour/drives/motivation and then applying cues or markers. In simplistic terms you don’t train a dog to sit, it already knows how to sit. What is needed is ‘motivation’ to sit and then adding a ‘cue/marker’ so the dog makes the link – if I sit on the ‘cue’ (sit command) I might get a reward (motivation).
Dogs/Wolves have some truly fantastic abilities… tracking dogs have been tested by top line stealth armed forces personnel and they found it was impossible to shake the dogs off the trail. Dogs have been trained to detect the onset of epileptic fits in humans, once again this is the dogs ability to read very subtle changes in body language and as such the can tell an epileptic they are about to have a fit before they realise it themselves. Dogs can also sniff out some cancers.
Endurance… no other animal on the planet can turn food into energy like a dog can. Check out the Iditarod, The Great Alaskan Dog Sledge Race. A team of 16 dogs pull a laden sledge over 1000 miles in just over 10 days… and so they RUN 100 miles a day on a 50-50 duty cycle, 50% rest, 50% running per 24 hours and while doing so they consume as many calories in one day as a human would in one week!
Dogs have the most diversifications of physique and appearance of any species on the planet, they are one of the most adaptable animal on the planet, most successful predator in the wild and probably the most trainable out side of primates. Not bad for an animal that is also one of the most abused and most misunderstood creatures alive.

My dogs follow the pack mentality entirely- simply becasue I give them no choice but to do so.
However, as much as I think they're adorable, I really hope I don't physically resemble my rottie! :o) |

that's nothing to worry about, I've got a dog that only its mother could love... a French Mastiff, and a Bullmastiff, don't want to be a look-a-like to them!!! |
