Has anyone seen the new speed awareness advert??
It absolutely horrible to watch, almost made me cry.
I know it's an important message and it really does make you think. But it is very shocking to watch and could easily upset a lot of people . |

people need upsetting about it, its about time shock value advertising came into play, whoever complains about it need a reality check an a good look in the mirror, too many RTA's occurring each day time people woke up |

If the advert is based on thoroughly researched evidence that it works the best for the money spent on it, then Im ok. Just appeasing those who need shock tactics, whether it is effective or not, then it would be a crass waste of money. All such investments should be based on sound research, as if it has poor results than more lives are needlessly lost. I have not seen it but have seen some dreadful bike adverts before that were shocking rather than motivating. |

"The emergency services can't complain about attending the scenes because they're "too graphic", so why should anyone else be shielded from the reality?"

Exactly & as quite a few of my friends are in it , I've seen the effect that attending a bad RTA has on them afterwards. |

if it makes just a small percentage look at their own driving and adapt if necessary then its done its job..
the reality can be much more shocking on many aspects and the 'upset' felt by families and friends every single day is massive in comparison.. |

Is it the one where the speeding car crashes onto a group of children having a picnic? To symbolise the 28+ kids that get killed by speeding drivers every year.
Shocking advert but so it should be. |

The d.o.e. In northern ireland have had a lot of this type of ad produced now for some time and the majority are very graphic, this one represents the 28 children killed alone on the roads of northern ireland, hope they keep up the good work and it wises some drivers up! |

"I have not seen it, I think it is a good idea. Maybe make them more gruesome, as most people think it wont happen to me when they are speeding or drink driving."

Apparently shock advertising doesn't work, whereas comedic advertising does work. Obviously comedy and killing people with a vehicle isn't going to work either.
RTA's could be reduced by 23% if people were not so lazy, as 23% occur within a mile of home! As many people do not drive very far I might guess that 50% of motorist are prepared to put other peoples lives at risk just because they are too lazy to walk to the shop/school.
I think the problem resides in 'motorist are prepared', fact is, most are not prepared. How often does a person get behind the wheel and say to them selves 'This could be the day I kill someone with my car'. Fact is, while it might be more likely to happen to some people, and less to others, fact is it could happen to ANY driver.
It's all very well showing graphic images of a body or bodies mutilated by a vehicle but that image will evaporate in the voice in the head saying 'I would never do a thing like that', then in less than 24 hours, off out in the car crating the risk of creating the scene in the advert!
Point is, adverts of the type do not educate, it doesn't really explain what really causes it and how to prevent it.
With any RTA, if any of the speeds involved had been less than they were, damage would have been less, and chances are there would not have been an RTA at all.
Complacency is the main cause of accidents coupled with little or no comprehension of velocity, kinetic energy and impact force. Just about everyone knows what the result of hitting a person with car might look like, but how many are aware of what causes such events?
