was a house fire round the corner to us its absolutely gutted this has always been a fear I have .. where would you start rebuilding your life?

It's an awful thought.

At least with photos you can scan old stuff and have a copy for safety. Other than that try not to get attached to belongings and make sure you're properly insured.

I advise buying a note book, then go round and make a list, room by room. You can be staggered by how much you own and what it might cost to replace. Just with cd's and LP's alone, do you know what you have? Would you remember if it all went? Keep the book in a metal/sealed box to protect it from fie or flood.

It's bad enough losing it all but forgetting stuff and not claiming it on the insurance would add to your upset, once you remember after you've been paid. I know, I've done it.

just heard the man died today the fireservice were on a strike that day too

My family have had two homes completely gutted with fire. It helps you put life into context - we were just concerned with pets but all were saved. Anything else is largely unimportant.

now they are saying would he have died had the fireman not been striking? we have the firestation in the same road but it was not manned so they had to come from further away

I was in a house fire trapped in attic firefighters got to seconds before i was going to jump to near certain death. Not the best experience of my life.

And striking firefighters came from another station with a turn out of 10 mins.

ive heard different stories some said it was an hour had a very sad outcome no matter what
