Trying to make myself a bit of a bearing press tool, need a nut and bolt around an M16 diameter by around 250mm long, been looking online and some people are taking the piss asking about £40/ £50 for that size, any idea where I can pick it up cheap, either online or any shops around the b/ham area ?

Great Wyrley

Plenty of industry round the black country bud.

Try ringing a fixings place. Theres a few about that make threaded rods and stuff. Worth a try?

There used to be a place in Derby that could get hold of pretty much anything, but they relocated and I can't remember their name.

Could you not use some M16 threaded rod and 2 nuts?

that could probably work, just been reading up on bolt sizes and different thread pitches, and their was me thinking a bolt was a bolt lol

If it's large diameter you are looking for then think plumbing supplies more than engineering old fashioned 1" pipe was dirt cheap and the thread cutter to go with it. Don't know if there is a metric equivalent or if its only repairing old stuff but I have used it for clamps and other heavy projects in the past.

I was looking at tap and die sets they are surprisingly cheap, I remember giving one away years ago thinking I would probably never use it lol, I have Emailed a local engineering ferm, lets wait and see what price they come back with, if they can be bothered to take on an order of one bolt, nut, and a couple of washers lol

What are you wanting to press bearings onto (or into)?

well I did a rear wheel bearing on my sisters fiesta last weekend, I got the old one out using a bub puller but had to use a lump of wood and a big hammer to smack the new one in, not a job you do very often, so I thought I don't really wont to spend the money on a full bearing puller tool set, I have seen clips on youtube of people doing it with a big bolt and a few spacers and using socket the right diameter to push the bearings in.

Use a threaded bar and two nuts, have you tried the local college. I used to do an engineering course and did the odd job for people who came into the college.

This is generally what I use along with a few washers. I've done all manner of things such as wishbone arm bushes and wheel bearings.

yes it can be done that way, just trying to make life a little easier for next time I have to do a bearing

Mmm I have seen it done before, I guess it depends on how stubborn the bearing is when you try getting it out, I dare say the thread might strip off.
