A friend of mine started a part time job @ 16 hrs a week in February. She's since been told unless she agrees to work less hours, they will lay her off.

Is this allowed ?

Also she gets FTC to top up her wages and needs to work 16 hours a week to receive this.

Can anyone help or advise on this

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Without knowing the circumstances it's difficult to comment.

If the employer is reducing hours rather than making people redundant and that is what is being negotiated then the decision is about taking on the new terms rather than losing a job. If it's about the employer demanding a cut in hours and dismissing for refusal to accept the new terms then there may be a case to answer if the dismissal process is being handled incorrectly.

Your friend should get to CAB and get some advice.

gatwickish (yes that means near Gatwick)

should all be done by formal consultation though, however as a short service employee they can lay off without to much legal hassle

Such a shame because she's just got her first job after having a break to have her children.

they have to give 12 weeks notice if she has a contract but as far as i know if you work under 16 hours you cant claim tax credits
