help needed, how do i get message sounds ?

i want a noise when i get a message, so i know i have a message. i know it can be done as one of my fab friends has it on his laptop, i'd ask him but he's fast asleep and not online. anyone kind enough to help me out ?

don't think fab do this, if you go to email notification tho and switch on, your email provider makes a noise when you get a email.
