I'm not really a football fan, however, I don't think it matters who is in charge, if we don't play our home grown youth at home level, what hope do they have at international level when all our national team players sod off to play for their own country.

God, not Mourinho. He plays dreadful, negative football. I'd rather we try and attack and fail then win 1-0 by grinding it out.

Someone like Roberto Martinez would be perfect. Not sure why he'd want the job, though.

hodgesons contract is going to be upheld.

it runs until 2016 and he is staying.

these are the words of greg dyke this dinner time.

i dont see why he needs to be sacked.

he bowed to the publics will and tried to play football that he doesnt usually coach.

if people let him do what he was employed to do and manage, rather than keep telling him what team he should be picking, he will do a little better.

that said, i dont think he is th eman to get the best out of the attacking young players we have at our disposal, or will have in the next few years, BUT i think he is the man to bring stability while the FA find a coach that can coach the kind of football everyone seems to want.

lets ignore this world cup, cuz its been one of suprises (apart from us going out lol)

who put money on Spain being the first team to go out?

i suspected they wouldnt get through to the second round, but didnt think they would be quite so bad.

Why does everyone blame the management? Was they on the field kicking the ball?

No. It was them over paid wankers they get hundreds of thousands a week and they all played shit. Makes me fucking sick especially when rugby players give there all and get knocked about for a yearly wage of an average footballers weekly wage.

Where's the justice in that.

I would give Glenn Hoodle the job.

Redknapp would have been my choice before Hodgson but I think the QPR saga has taken it's toll on him.

But it's not just the manager that needs changing the whole approach to football in England needs changing.

Hard to Break down ? Maybe we were watching a different game but what i saw was a young team who went for it,Ok the defence fucked up twice which has cost dearly but all in all i think the manager and he whole of the english squad can sit back over the next couple of weeks and say yeah i done my best.

Yes that is Hodgson's game hard to break down but due to the media and expectation levels he had to play another way.

I think you could be right they may have done their best. But was their best enough? I can see another easy qualification campaign going well and the same result at the Euro's.

If he does stay on I would like to see all the over 30's retired. No more picking players on name alone if you don't perform your out.

Of course their best wasnt good enough but what im trying to say is i think he got it right in his choice of players to take given the limited amount of English players available, I would agree that the elders are probably past their prime and wont be there in four years time but every sport needs experience to build for the future

Let's face it the team is poor, being British we expect big things because the media tell us we are a dominant force in football but it's a lie. The premier league is only great because of the international players, take them away and your left with Rooney and co. Sack the manager and pay millions to the next man to inherit the same players? And do the same thing, it's the playing culture and the mentality that needs to change not the manager!

Also on itv Lee Dixon got irate over Patrick Vieira's claim that cheating is part of the modern game fair enough it's not right but don't be ignorant to it. Most teams use some kind of cheating to progress we look at others and moan but the teams were moaning against seem to go a lot further

Great point I still think they should bring back the rule where they had to field a certain amount of british players in each game. We need to bring through a nurture more talents like Ross Barkley. For the last game the lies of shaw / barkley and other youngsters should be given a game for the experience and the euros will be on us in no time at all.

Agree with you 100% 3 foreign players per team, but the FA cannot do it now as they'll lose to much money. This is where the problems start when they try and undercut on wages and fee's in the long run it'll ruin things. They've shot themselves in the foot and the next England manager will just be a scapegoat but your salary compensates for it

There is no vacancy....but what difference would the change make. It's the PLAYERS who were poor.

Cost Rica don't have half the so called "talent" or ability of our players. The difference is pride in their country and they wanted to win.

Our players clearly had neither of those things. Over paid, pampered and over-rated.

Prior to the start the bookies had shorter odds on England finishing bottom of group than top....that shows the real state of things....bookies don't like to lose money!

Dear o dear , lol , so many disillusioned supporters . Valid point made earlier, which has been in force for 20 years, . England has arguably the best league in football. Full of quality teams, unfortunately full of other national players who play for money. The english players tho are good players are not the quality required at a higher level . I.e subueteo ( how u spell that ) . Changing your manager would not rectify your national quality of football.

When the last of the so called golden generation have all retired then and only then can we begin to start contemplating competing equally again.

The players are good enough its the system we choose to employ thats the problem there is little if no flexibility in the formation for when we have the ball and equally when we dont have the ball we drop to deep instead of closing down earlier and winning the ball higher up the pitch.

Brazil have changed into this old european style of football in an attempt to win the world cup and its dreadful there is no flair and no flexibility the same as england.

We inisist on playing four men at the back marking one it makes no sense and we try and play gerrard as the holding midfielder when that is not his game you cannot hope to achieve anything if you play players in positions that are unnatural to them. Claude makele never played on the wing or in the hole behind the striker he played one position all of his career holding midfielder allowing the full backs to push on without fear and he was the best at that in the business.

Hodgson knows this yet he cant change everything all at once or the press and the public would rip him to bits as they did glenn hoddle for dropping gazza in 1998 or hodgson himself at liverpool.

Give him time to sort it out and watch us in the euros in 2016.

Forever England

The truth is roy should never have been appointed, but the powers that be made that decision whilst simultaneously ignoring its whole country of fans, there isnt a vacancy for england manager so it is entirely unfair to talk about a replacement as though there is, the thing is though hes been half brave leaving some of the older ones at home, setting the way for the future although he didnt follow it up with his team selections, gerrard played to desensive, barkley on the bench? The midfield should of been built around him, I could go on, but sacking the manager wont do any good, he needs to get the remaining older ones out of the team and let our young players get some experience against costa rica, leave gerrard off, hes been a good servant but hes finished now, play the youth and get ready to go again.

Surprised this thread is still going, but here's my tuppence...

There is this kneejerk tendency to sack managers prematurely when a team is strugging so the managers don't get a chance to stamp their authority. This is an inexperienced team - I think Roy should get a reasonable chance.

Hoddle won't get the job again after his comments about disabled people.

As long as they leave Tony Pulis at Palace I'll be happy!

Now, when does the Test Match resume...?

And no it absolutely should not have been Redknapp (IMO). He can't spend stupid amounts of money and get England into administration, so he'd have no chance. Mourinho says he was offered the job but his missus told him not to take it, so you can all take him off your lists as well.

Stick with Hodgson until 2016 then look at someone who can expand on the progress we've made re. young players like Bielsa. And if someone quotes me saying "lol what progress we're out of the World Cup after two games" I will probably scream or cry.

We pay the best money due to the Sky and BT TV deals and our young players are greedy and would rather sit on the bench festering than move to another club and better themselves. Just look at Micah Richards for an example.

No, it's not likely to be him because he has already turned the job offer down (therefore showing we did want him to become manager, proving your point moot).

"England will never do any good. There's too many foreigners in the premier league. They should cap it maybe 5 per team. Then it might start producing local and English talent which is what we need.

If all the foreign players are over here, what's stopping players from playing abroad? The clubs over seas must be good at developing talent or teams over here wouldn't be noticing them players and picking them to play over here would they?

We pay the best money due to the Sky and BT TV deals and our young players are greedy and would rather sit on the bench festering than move to another club and better themselves. Just look at Micah Richards for an example. "

I'm not really a footie fan so I don't know who that is lol

It's sad that they can't see the benefit in improving their game, maybe the overpaid calls of others is justified to some extent although comparing rugby wages to football wages is silly as rugby just doesn't have the global fan basethat football does. Rugby players also chase the cash, with a lot of them going over seas to France where the money is better (haskell and Wilkinson for instance) so they aren't the hard done by paupers some football haters would have ypu believe lol

He was playing though to be fair but just unlucky with injuries in recent times, probably our best right back.

I don't agree Zabaleta is a better player and gives 100% all the time. He has that mentality Tevez has he will run himself into the ground for the team.

Richards decided a while ago to stay at City for the money can't see him getting back to his previous form again.

To be fair, Richards is a great example of everything wrong with English football. An athlete who can play football, rather than a football who is an athlete. Football first, athletics second.

"Jose Mourinho

I think he would be the right man for the job.

2018 if jose mouriho is coach england will win the world cup.

He's to outspoken, our FA only want a yes man so it's not likely to be anyone who speaks their own mind."

Agree it was the same with Brian Clough, he was the best man for the job in 1977 and 1982 but the FA never appointed him, Brian Clough the best manager england never had. Mourinho has turned the job down now but has not ruled it out for sometime in the future, but i very much doubt the tossers at the FA will ever employ him. The FA are and always have been more interested in public image instead of who is the best man for the job. The Fans choice after Capello went was Harry Redknapp but instead we got Roy Hodgson because shock horror Redknapp was involved in a court case. What a joke, its time the FA got off their high horses and start to listen to what the fans want for a change!

Redknapp is a better man manager, he can get the best out of individuals, he could put some fire in the bellies of the players, because the body language of the england players in this world cup has told me they are not really up for it. The message to the players should be Play with passion and be ready to put your life on the line when you pull that england shirt on like Terry Butcher and Stuart Pearce did otherwise you won't be selected.

Time and time again we seem to fail. I caught only a bit of the Italy game but our movement and passing was the best I seen for a while. We kept the ball well. Second game was a different team. Losing the ball with unfocused passing, no communication but worse of all no desire to get the balk back. We need people with the fire and desire to win. No exciluses not good enough and won't be for a long time yet.

"Bollox

apart from the result it was a good performance yet again we put a good shift in but got beat "

This is where footy and sex differ, unfortunately in footy the results are the measure of success and performance is largely irrelevant!

Martin Samuel in today's paper.

Roy Hodgson has one big decision left to make at the World Cup.

Does he pick a window or aisle seat on the flight home
