not that long...maths degree....

as long as italy beat costa rica (which they will probably do) then there is hope.... if they beat costa rica by 2 or more, you are then not relying on other teams running up the score and england do have to run it up.... just win

the one saving grace england is that a win by italy tomorrow doesn't quite win them the group or guarentee them the 2nd round...

although the more they beat costa rica by tomorrow, the more players they could rest for the uruguay game without fear of goal difference coming into play.......

Whether we scrape through or not, having lost 2 out of 2 it is just delaying the inevitable.

All the bullshit on here about 'positives' after the Italy game, results get you through. Nothing more, nothing less. And as ever England failed to come even close to troubling the later stages of a tournament.

Most countries have less people to pick from Holland's population is a 1/3 of the size of England we are just shite.

Does your football expertise also tell you that our 2 centre backs where at fault for both goals....Jagielka letting Suarez run off him, and the second goal? why did Jageilka run towards Gerrard when clearly Gerrard was going for the header, he should have stayed back but he never....Gerrard has been Englands stand out player for last few years

Excepting that you overlook several things.

First, Uruguay's 2nd goal was scored through the brilliance of Suarez and the inability of Cahill and Jags to cover the back as centre halves should have been doing in that situation. To blame Gerrard for a ball glancing of his head 50 plus yards from goal and when he wasn't the last man in defence is rediculous in the extreme.

Secondly to lay LFC's loss of the title on one slip in a tight game is equally rediculous and has been done to death at the end of the season. Liverpool lost the title because when compared to Man City, City had a better overall defence throughout the season which has been established over several years and with many millions of pounds, Liverpool were at season one of there attempt to regain the title with considerably less resources to call upon.

As for Gerrard being past his best, debateable at the very least, personally I hope he retires from international football and concentrates his effort at LFC where no doubt he will continue to be a success. With 13 goals and 13 assists last season Gerrard did more then most to help LFC achieve a very notable 2nd place.

Gerrard is obviously a great captain , and has led us to a position we should be rightly proud of . His performance was impeccable , and the chances he created and near misses he had tonight showed his class .

Because there are far far too many overseas players here am not saying some do not bring quality but if we are serious about having a decent national team then this has to be drastically reduced as no doubt talent is there but its stifled by lack of opportunity as clubs go for foreigners as quick fix instead of develooing english players.

People were talking 'shit' after the first match with all the crap about playing well and plenty of positives and ignoring the fact they lost. I read crap like on their day england can apparently match any team in the world - seriously?

The reality is that internationally England are now only slightly less irrelevant than the other home countries.

The foreign player argument obviously has merit..but it can't be the only one.

From 1966 to the introduction of the Premiership and the first significant influx of foreign players we failed in the WC or European champions.that's thirty years of failure...so the problem isn't new

several players over the 2 games made mistakes, at any level of sport people do so..

the whole performance in comparison to that shown against Italy was very poor..

strangely enough your not the only supporter who over the years has been frustrated at the national team, the issues why are many and in some ways a 'wider debate'..

Look at how Chile played against Spain the other night, with passion and fire in their bellies, closing down Spannish players quick and not giving them any time on the ball. Our players are the complete opposite, no passion, no fire in the belly and stroll around like its a kick about in the local park on a sunday afternoon. At least go out fighting like the aussies did, the fans would'nt complain then but that was piss poor last night from England.

Most pundits I heard were playing our chances down. This is the first tournament I can remember where expectations were low - quarter finals at best, not getting out of the group at worst.

And all this talk of 'passion' makes me laugh - don't people think the players wanted to do well ? Encouraging performance against Italy, back to normal against Uruguay, plane home on Tuesday unless results go our way.

Trev Brooking stepping down will have a massive effect on the futures stars I think, you'll do well to replace him.

It dosent matter who is in charge for England, if defenders still leave the guy at the back post unmarked, school boy flick on's in midfield and hitting the bar from 2 feet out.

Im suprised the ref isn't being shot down, I thought he did no favours for England last night. Uragay could of been down to 10 men and conceeded a penalty quite easily.

What always helps is playing the correct players in the correct posistions.

The list in endless the truth is the national team are crap because we have thought for too long we are England we can just turn up and have a go.

Here are a few reasons the national team fail.

Lots of players are millionaires before they have done anything in the game. A player at Chelsea is on £20k a week and he has not made his debut in the first team yet.

The premier league are not under the control of the FA. They are going to look after their own interest's which is selling games to countries all over the world. Not how good the National team are.

The coaching systems in the country are behind most other European nations. Only the elite kids receive the best.

Most importantly England players in the past have come out and said they put playing for their club before country.

Carragher and Scholes being examples.

The whole system needs overhauling.

Plenty of pundits have rubbished our chances this year.

To be honest, I really thought we'd do better.

I don't think we could have played any better because our players are over hyped, over paid and second class on the world stage.

We've beaten a lot of countries in friendlies over the last 4yrs but when it comes down to the nitty gritty of top competition, we're really pretty shite
