'dole dossers'

Jump to: Newest in thread

West Yorkshire

Just saw a profile where 'dole dossers' were put in the same category as injection drug users.

I'm currently without a job but hate the term 'dole dosser', does an unemployed person automatically class as a dole dosser? Or are there different sub-levels of being unemployed??

Ah ok...So what does one have to do to be a dole dosser?

Unfortunately people who have never been unemployed look down on people who have and use derogatory terms for them. Must make them feel better

I have been working and on PAYE for the last 24 years. But I have now been unemployed 20days. Does that make me a dole dosser

I think the term is used by those without the wit or imagination to ever see themselves as unemployed. Lets see how long they use the expression for after their jsa is stopped after 6 months and they are then entitled to nowt because their partner earns 17k.

I love popping candy. I put it all in at once. Im unemployed and have been for over a year. People that claim JSA are not all drug users. Im out of work because of a back injury. I hope to return soon. Some people don't have a cluex

This, I think its used to refer to people that have never done a days work in there life, and do everything they can to ensure they never do, dont see how that makes them all drug users though.

I don't think the profile was suggesting that unemployed people are drug users, but in their eyes a 'dole dosser' is as abhorrent a prospect as an injection drug user.

To me, a "dole dosser", or "benefits cheat" is someone who has made the conscious lifestyle choice to live permanently on benefits (and probably cash-in-hand work as well).

Everyone else on benefits is just "unemployed" for a legitimate reason. I find it quite irritating when genuinely unemployed people take umbrage to the derogatory terms when they are clearly not indicated by those descriptions.

No it doesn't and all generalisations can cause hurt and offence.

No one knows what life may bring them so be careful how you judge.

The so called dole dossers may become affluent and do well only to then be referred to as professional stuck up snobs and tory voters etc.....The list goes on.

Judge on individual merit and choose words carefully or not at all?

Very wide sweeping statement there

I've never been unemployed and only "look down" on the dirty lazy filthy excuses for human beings on the dole who are just that.... dirty lazy filthy twats who have absolutely no intention of ever working in their miserable lives but I do feel very sorry for the people who do want to work but can't get a job and end up stereo typed with the Jeremy Kyle types.

"Ah ok...So what does one have to do to be a dole dosser?"

To be a dole dosser in my eyes you have to be one or more of the following:

Content on the dole

Would rather scratch your arse than look for a job

Would rather watch jezza kyle than look for a job

Spend your dole on drink

Make no attempt to look for a job

Dont have any flexibility in the job youre looking for

Refuse to do courses that will better your cv regardless of what they are

"To me, a "dole dosser", or "benefits cheat" is someone who has made the conscious lifestyle choice to live permanently on benefits (and probably cash-in-hand work as well). "

Does that make me a "dole dosser"? I made the conscious lifestyle choice to live permanently on benefits... Because I'd rather look after my disabled husband than have somebody else do it. It took over a year to get enough benefits to live on, so I had to work cash in hand, from home, so I wouldn't be on the street.

How could anybody know without being familiar with your personal circumstances?

It does sounds as though you've been a benefit cheat however. Whether that's right or wrong I've no idea.

Yep, cos nobody can live on less than £70 a week. So I screwed the system that screwed me.

Although technically I'm not on benefits cos none of it is in my name.

It's actually more like volunteer work. I work 24/7 for no pay.

So if that's what people think is a benefits cheat then my hands are up.

This is spot on !

When the guy down the road who has never worked( only cash in hand?)

Drives a new car (motability) gets his rent paid , top of the range phones on contract , is always drinking and shops at the best shops?

And when asked why he doesn't get a job?

Easy answer he can't afford too !

Thanks. Of course I'm grateful, and I only worked cash in hand when the system didn't help. And stopped as soon as I could. I dont think its right to claim benefits and work cash in hand, but I would have had to work 60 hours a week in a 'proper' job in order to pay the bills and get a carer. Some people would do that, but not me.

Never heard the term, but sounds like the governments divide and conquer tactics have worked on some malleable people's minds. We are all unique and generalisation is a waste of time. Look at fab users, are all swingers the same? Of course not. Treat others with respect and the world is a better place.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

How would they know whether someone is unemployed and/or cheating the system? If someone is capable of cheating the benefits system/takes cash in hand work I doubt they would have any qualms about claiming to be legitimately employed in order to get some sex.

People think I am odd for not reducing my taxes and paying the VAT on work on my home. I'm the only one that genuinely knows whether that statement is true.

I notice you only quoted the first paragraph of my post, and not the second part that states 'Everyone else on benefits is just "unemployed" for a legitimate reason.' You have a legitimate reason for being unemployed, but still question yourself as a "dole dosser", which you are clearly not. If it wasn't for actual "dole dossers", maybe you wouldn't have had to wait over a year to get legitimate benefits or work cash in hand? They're taking money out of your pocket too.

(m) To me, a dole dosser is someone who can't be bothered to get off their backside & even TRY to get a job. Happy to stay in bed till mid day everyday.

Anyone that's on the dole that tries getting jobs, actually makes an effort, even if turned down, that just being unfortunately unemployed. I've been unemployed quite a few times between jobs in the past, so I feel I'm qualified to add my 2 pennies worth. Fortunately I've not had to sign on for about 12 years & I'm happy with my job. Not all unemployed are dole dossers.

And those are the ones most easily avoided. Any profile with such reductionist terms would be one for me to steer clear of. Another handy little filter.

Calm down, no need to get so excited, Jeremy Kyle entertains millions with the "dirty lazy, filthy twats" as you so delightfully describe those less fortunate. Those who are unable to work through lack of appropriate available employment.

I wonder whether some people that others consider as "dole dossers" are actually unable to work due to long term health problems. There's a different between these people & those who have made a lifestyle choice to never seek work even though they are mentally & physically capable of doing so.

I know a lot of people milk the benefits system, however it exists for a reason! It protects the vulnerable.

Some people are too quick to judge others! Even injecting drug users / they've never wondered what led them to go down that route. Addicts don't tend to want to remain an addict !
