Maybe they don't know the words
Although I have to say its a bug bear of mine. If you have been chosen to represent your country at an international event then they should have the respect to sing the national anthem
To me it strikes me was they feel they were entitled to be there so they dont have to sing. |

You've hit the nail with your closing words..........
It's the pride in rugby players that is missing in the footballers. Either that or they're scared that their awful singing will be heard on the telly. |

Oh god, another Football vs Rugby thread.
Have a look at Brazil singing theirs last night.
Have a look at Scotland singing Flower of Scotland at Hamden park.
Ive never seen an English footballer belt out an anthem, maybe thats the problem. |

With rugby you'll find they sing it more to get their adrenaline up as they're going to be putting their bodies through punishment for the next 80 minutes |

Where as footballers just faff about for 90 minutes? Why don't they need the same boost of adrenaline to get them pumped for the game? |

Maybe the problem is ours is a bit.....dirgey???? Scotland, Wales and Ireland have better tunes to theirs "
Oh I disagree I think our anthem is very strong & patriotic sounding ~ they only other one I think comes close is the USA's.
But totally agree ~ you represent the country, learn the bloody words & SING!! |

Different strokes for different...sports. They have their different pre-match rituals.
I find New Zealand doing the haka cringeworthy to watch as it's mostly a bunch of white guys but you can't deny it's effectiveness in getting the blood flowing.
Plus our anthem is a bit shit |

"Besides, I really don't think having pride or being patriotic comes down to whether or not you sing a dour anthem for 30 seconds. It's a bit daft "
Its about perception though isn't it. To me, being proud to represent your country means singing the national anthem at the start if the game, or when picking up your medal etc. Not singing, to me, shows that its just another day in your life, nothing special and that they are entitled not to sing because they are entyityled to be there. The ego has taken over kind of thing.
It makes me laugh that football fans are some of the most vpatriotic people, with flags flying from every window, car, oriface, yet suggest that 11 men should sing their country's national anthem and no one gives a shit lol |

Im going to represent my country in a few years and cant wait. I wont sing our anthem, Im very passionate about being Welsh, I'll be concentrating on the game.
Im glad others have said it before me but I think the English anthem needs changing now and a more modern version brought out where its not just about one person. |

You confused me by mentioning the recent world cup win/loss and semi final appearance.
I watched USA's manager (a german) move his mouth when their anthem was played the other night. Wasnt even an attempt of singing it.
I wouldnt sing it either.
Id happily transform your whole country's outlook on the game and make you a success (I hope), Id be extremely passionate about my job and your country but I wouldnt sing your anthem.

I know but I still dont see the significance, I am sorry.
You often hear the pundits say of many sports 'That was a gutless performance there by' .... (insert any country here).
They never rewind back to see how many sang the song at the start.
Im all for anthems, to me its more to do with the crowd.
I like the way certain teams at the WC sing and then the music stops, the crowd just carry it on then.
Ive also noticed Brazil's seems to go for 5 minutes where as the others don't.
Im not a huge fan of Opera Singers coming out and drowning every one else out and being at a much higher pitch at the good bits. |

As someone has already flagged up our anthem is about God saving our King/Queen...most national anthems refer to the concept of country..ie. Land of my fathers..which makes it inclusive to monarchists and republican.
Either way, in professional sport they have no bearing on performance... |

It seems us lot are more passionate perhaps than those given the chance to sing it, with a camera man under your nose.
Im dying to see one of these camera men trip and up and the players try and carry on as if nothing happened. |

You even know that you've spouted complete bollocks judging by your last few lines. Congrats on stereotyping every person who plays football to be a "thug". What a stupid thing to do. That's like me saying all rugby players are repressed homosexuals as they do that whole gay "banter" thing. It's just a downright stupid thing to say. |

I don't see why people need to bash footballers, or football as a sport. If you (not referring to you personally) don't like them, then don't bang on about how much you don't like them and certainly don't create fictitious nonsense about them not giving their international match fees to charity, that's bollocks and unfair. Like I said, I don't go about bashing Cricket or Rugby (I really enjoy watching Rugby when England play actually). |

This ^^^ really.
Other national anthems sing about being proud to be a part of the country. How the people strived for freedom and worked to make the country great. Ours just gives praise to the monarch. It says nothing about being proud to be English. Mentions nothing about what it is to be English. In fact our anthem mentions nothing about being English at all it just wishes our majesty good health.
I can't see the point in forcing people to sing about something they don't believe in. |

England currently has no agreed national anthem, with "God Save The Queen", the national anthem of the United Kingdom often being used in sporting events in which England competes separately from the other Home Nations. However, there are calls for this to be changed, and a 2006 survey conducted by the BBC suggested that 55% of the English public would rather have "Land of Hope and Glory" than "God Save the Queen" as their national anthem |

Got my vote.
I've looked at the words in other anthems and they're like grand rallying calls, bringing every man, women and child together. I would happily sing our anthem if it was about the nation as a whole. |

We can hardly vote no then continue singing about "we can still rise now and be a nation again.." (Look out for some awkward moments if/when England come to Glasgow in November for a friendly!)
Similarly, if it's yes, it's gonna look and sound dated. Perhaps time for a new one. I reckon you'll still hear it at the games now and again though. |

Is that down to singing or coaching?
Performce...coaching
Pride.... Singing
I've not once said that singing improves performance, just that it shows pride and respect which are important attributes to me.
Are you saying that not singing an anthem means that individual doesn't have pride and respect ?...anyone involved in professional sport knows that individuals have their own way of preparing themselves for performance..some need to get emotional, others don't.
We as spectators don't have that decision to make...we are not performing. So maybe we should show some respect to those that are
I'm.always, respectful but on this thread I am being allowed to say how it comes across to me personally.
I've no doubt they are proud and have respect for the position they worked hard to get however some fans, myself included, think that they should show their pride and respect by singing the national anthem. It clearly means a lot yo the fans as they sing it at the top of their voices in the terraces!
Think you might have missed the point..fans can sing as loud as they want, and good on them..but they don't have to deal with how players prepare themselves, mentally and emotionally it must be down to individual choice, and as a fan I'm hoping they know best what suits them."
I got your point. I was just reiterating mine. |

"Morning all ive just been watching some of the world cup ( boring ) and ive watched england v Italy ! Can someone explain why players dont sing there national anthem ? In rugby the players belt out the anthems with pride !!!
Rugby is a thuggish game played by gentlemen, and gentlemen take pride in their country and show it.
Soccer is a game for gentlemen played by thugs, thugs are thugs...
Need I say more?

You even know that you've spouted complete bollocks judging by your last few lines. Congrats on stereotyping every person who plays football to be a "thug". What a stupid thing to do. That's like me saying all rugby players are repressed homosexuals as they do that whole gay "banter" thing. It's just a downright stupid thing to say. "
Really?
I said football is a game for gentlemen played by thugs, I stand by that statement. According to the rules he game is a non contact sport, where cheating is the norm not the exception to the rule. No matter the level of play fouling is considered to be part of the game as is attempting to get away with fouling by immediate denial! Remember 'the hand of god' or Vinny grabbing that other players balls? Why is Garry Linekar the only first class player to never have been booked in the English game?
And the fans...
How often does the chanting from the terraces have to be muffled and dubbed because of foul, racist and insulting chants? Why do the parents of children playing a Sunday morning match scream at their children telling them to get stuck in and take out other children and then try (and at time succeed) to intimidate the ref if a decision is given against their child and team?
Answer: The game is played and followed by thugs.
I also said rugby is a game for thugs played by gentlemen. I stand by that too.
Rugby is a full contact sport, it is extremely violent in nature whit lots of opportunities for foul play however fouling fellow players is the exception rather than the rule. There is none of the menace towards the officials, away players and fans that you get at football matches. I respectfully suggest that this is because despite the nature of the game it is actually played by gentlemen.

Ive never seen an English footballer belt out an anthem, maybe thats the problem."
Yes the Scots belt their anthem out...
and they didn't even qualify for Brazil |

All very well but there is nothing in the rules stating football is a non contact sport. |

Sorry didn't know that. So 2 in a century, I think your objections to my comments make my point very eloquently.

Tony Finny, John Charles and Dixie Dean have also never been booked. Lineker was booked while playing in japan so he should be taken of the list.
But being booked is not an indication of cheating. A player can be booked for removing his shirt or swearing, neither of which is seeking to gain an advantage.

"My bad, shoulder to shoulder contact is allowed as is unintentional contact to the legs provided the ball is contacted first...
But where do the rules say its OK to ride over the ball and impale another players shins with your studs? Or slide in from the side and do the same to a calf? Or are they just 2 of the 'professional' fouls that are such a part of the 'beautiful game'...
"
football is not and never has been a non contact sport, diving/cheating isnt/has never been an accepted part of the sport, it happens and the authorities are struggling to stamp it out but it isnt accepted, yes they are overpaid, but there are some decent ones among them, niall quinn while at sunderland been a prime example, very rarely in the refs note book, never earnt a patch of the money the likes of rooney and all earn and he set a precedent by setting a target of raising a million pound from his testimonial game and donating the lot to charity, which others now follow suit. |

Your trolling is boring. A 4/10 for the amount you've written but the substance is lacking. I'd advise trying again but with a bit more passion next time. |

I dont know who has written the essay thats being added too but a saw a few question marks.
Linekar - Never booked. Cards wern't dished out as much back then, as mentioned, it dosent have to be a foul to get carded these days.
Why do parents get so heated on the touchlines Saturday morning?
Passion and learning from the mistakes we see the stars making on tv.
Rugby a gents game etc. They had to set up a video panel so players can get banned after the match if the ref misses something. That tells me devious things happen amongst all the bodies. Its nicknamed Thugby. Eye gouching, stamping, head high tackles, leading with the shoulder not the arms etc etc.
Rugby is a great sport, the fans, the admin, everything about it, that dosent mean it has to be debated against the best game in the world - football. |
