Get Fit!!!!

Ok, this may well be aimed loosely in Mallys direction, but I'd welcome the input of others too....

I'm around 2 stone overweight, most of it hanging over my belt! I'm after some sort of training program, preferably something I can click to on the www and follow easily.

Here's the thing, I want to do it on the cheap. No gym memberships etc. I mean cheap as in no cost

So, work out in the home, using standard household objects. Running is fine (once upon a time I could run 10 miles a day no probs, these days I struggle to run for the bus. Which is 15 yards over the road!).

Any ideas anyone???

Firstly make sure in good enough Health to work out, adjust your Diet and use the Exercises from Circuit training, Press ups, Squats, run up and down the Stairs, Sit ups etc, try and get hold of a Kick bag rather than a Punch bag if you can get one let me know and I'll give you some exercises for that, other than that spend £3.00 a lesson and do some Thai Boxing classes

What's a kick bag? How does it differ from a punch bag?

£3.00 a lesson seems like it might just fit into my budget Do they accept overweight bloaters facing a mid life crisis though, or will I just be a human 'kick-bag'?

A Punch bag only works the upper Torso, a Kick bag works all of the Muscle groups.

The classes have beginners times, tell them you only want to Train and not Spar and you will be fine, if you Diet properly as well the Weight will fall off, we have loads of People in Mid life Training with us for the same reasons as you so dont worry

get some good walks in to get you used to breathing heavy,you can take gentle to start and build up your pace to whatyou can cope with,i find walks over our local clent hills offer me enough resistance.

it's a starting point.

Unbelievably, I used to have a size 30" waist, be fit as a fiddle (even with the tabs), churn out 10 miles a day with no problem. Even at 30 I was beating the youth on 7-10 mile runs.

I've let things go badly in the 5 years since leaving the RAF, hence my ever expanding gut.

I've even let my fav pastime of hillwalking lapse. I used to have no problems walking up and down varies 'Munros'. Now I struggle with the stairs!!!

I'll do some research on local kick boxing clubs, and see how that goes. Much appreciated

Cut down on what you eat and drink (especially alcohol) drink plenty of water (I drink 1.5 - 2L per day) and some moderate exercise - walking is a good starting point.

I (Bob) lost 3 stone in 12 months simply by being sensible in what I ate. No it wasn't a diet, no it wasn't eating rabbit food or other unpallatable muck- It was sensible portions - granted it included salad, but also beer, chips, burger etc only at the weekend, pasta, rice, Boiled fish, potatoes through the week - but all in MODERATION

Make sure you have brekky in the morning, boiled egg, cereal - it's the most important meal of the day.

Other than that, all I did was a couple of months treadmill training (not so much to lose weight but to get my heart,lungs and other muscles working in order to complete the Great North Run - which I did and am doing again in September this year.

So in summary, forget the fad diets, eat and drink sensibly and take moderate exercise - it works

A number of small changes will probably help in the medium to long term - rather than trying to give up everything you like and do all the things you might not be so keen on.

That way you wont notice a great change in life style yet still see results.

What kind of new hobby might you enjoy that is moderately active?

I did the same kind of thing - also rationalised my "treat" foods down to the ones I really could't give up, and swapped them for low fat versions.

lost 5 stone in 18 months

Ive started walking to work, 8 miles per day, not every day as i work shifts in a pub and often too tired the day after ive done both the day job and a the pub too but what with being on my feet in the pub and the walking ive lost over a stone in the last year

i want to keep going with it though i really need to target hips, thighs and fat tummy, and like you i dont want to use a gym, though more that i cant afford to. Skipping is a good idea, using baked bean tins or similar as weights.

If you wanted to start running again, start by walking say 50 paces and running 20 then build it up over a couple of months.

Either that or shag more

set yourself achievable objective's everyday.Look at your diet, go for a walk, turn it then into a brisk walk, as long as you get your heart rate pumping and you can feel yourself sweating then your starting to achieve this goal.

Othe rthings, use your stairs, steps ups starts slowly build, wall assisted dips, squats, use cans of beans/bags of sugar as weights for upper limb work.

Get on your bike if you have one. Also if you have a WII fit then use it, It is a great tool to use for a kick start.

Plus look at your local area for free classes,council run gyms are often alot cheaper than private gm and offer help for people on low income etc. or go to your gp as they have sources they can tap into.

If you have the space, a kick bag, some loose weights and a yoga mat, look at your diet, look at your current lifestyle and see where you can fit your exercise in, ideally you want to get yourself into the habit of doing your workout at a set time of day, be it morning or early evening, avoid eating any carbs after 6pm but if you can avoid eating anything after 6, even better, slow jogs help with the cardio till you build yourself up to a decent pace. As you know, I'm a fitness freak, probably doing too much but I'm set in my ways now, gym memberships are a WASTE OF TIME, as you'l' find yourself paying for something you dont use often enough, I don't use any gyms, the only thing I do pay for is the Jiu Jitsu, One thing to remember though, 30 mins is enough on a daily basis, don't start with a 2 hour workout, you'll do more harm than good, some other good advice has also been given in the thread, but these are the rules I work to and they seem to work for me.

Right, I've just weighed myself at 92Kg. Or 14 stone 7 lbs in real money.

I am aiming for 12 stones. Slow and steady does it I think, so I'll keep you updated as to my progress.
