Adjust your bird feeders for one's the larger birds can't eat from.

And get mealworms for robins too.

we do have mealworms, but the crafty sods land on the perch and just shake the bloody things till the seeds, nuts or worms fall on the ground, its there presence that's scared the little birds away

Feeders with smaller holes that hang are the answer - the bigger birds can't perch on them or get the food out.

And hang the fat balls away from the feeders so they go elsewhere.

Good advice - also make sure you take the fat bals out of the nets they come in - the birds get their feet stuck in them - Z

With the right bird feeders the tits will feed from the source and the bigger birds will scavenge on the floor for any seed that's spilt.

Bad winters effect garden birds. Tits & blackbirds in particular aren't very hardy. There's also been a steady increase of larger, aggressive birds like magpies & jackdaws which raid their nests.
