Has anyone been effected by the Passport Office backlog?
Our Daughter is going on her first all girls holiday to Malia next month and two of her friends still haven't received their passport. They sent in the application 3 months ago.
I feel really sorry for them.

No as recommended we renewed ours in the winter when its quieter and 5 months before we needed to use them. Its always a mystery why people leave it late to sort things out. |

I would say 3 months fir a process that is supposed to take 4 weeks is plenty of time. It's hardly last minute |

not many people go away in winter. so why should most pay for time they don't use. I think a month is reasonable |

I had to use that a few yeaes ago. It's expensive and there are only a limited number of appointments at a few offices. But as you need your old passport it's probably no good if you've already applied |

I've never use so I don't know the cost or how it works but I would pay the extra to go away if all booked.
I've always said there should be passport office in the post office so u go there make things a little easy for all. |

There is a process at large post offices which you pay a little extra for; the post office checks your application then stamps it which speeds everything up at the other end. They usually say it will be two weeks (I think) but I've always got mine back within a week.

We sorted our Daughters passport renewal out just after Christmas using the post office check and send service, which was brilliant as they spotted a tiny mistake that would have delayed her passport.
When the girls booked the holiday 6 months ago the ones that needed to renew all promised to get straight onto it. Obviously the two dopey girls that left it a further three months weren't expecting this chaos to ensue.
The holiday has been paid for so whatever happens the ten girls with passports will be going. I just feel desperately sorry for the girls waiting. Even if the go to Liverpool head office they can't get it sorted without an appointment and those are few and far between.
One of the girls asked the question that all teenage girls would love a yes answer to... "If they don't get their passports and can't come on holiday can I use up their baggage allowance?" And they are also deciding amongst themselves who will have the rooms with the fewer occupants!
Nowt like supportive mates is there!

We renewed ours earlier this year. I think it took about a month for both come back they're both dated from the end of April and I think we sent them off at the start of April. We didn't book the our holiday until they'd come back. We go on Monday. YAY. |

Those that sent off months ago I can sympathise with as they thought ahead but would still have rung up with reference number after 8 weeks. Those that have left it to last min I'm sorry but tough. It says on the paperwork they get busy during the holiday season and there are delays!
Just makes me laugh at how politicians can blame each other when majority of the problems are by people leaving it late and panicking |

"I can't fault the passport office when I applied to renew mine...it took a week and I had a new passport "
I renewed mine last month, used the check and send service and it was hand delivered within a week. |

There are delays and then there is incompetence.
Maybe if they used the outrageous amount they charge to invest in the service it wouldn't be such an issue - or if they charged a more reasonable amount people's expectations would be more reasonable. |

Very true, I can see your point completely, as a 18yo I did the same left it late, trip to Liverpool and got it day before I flew.
Something does need to be done, but it's always going to come back to all those who have left it to the last minute, every year it happens and the same discussion takes place. |

That was the case with mine...I didn't use the check and send...I just sent it and within a week the courier had delivered my passport to my work place |

We sent ours off in April and got them back 11 days later.
It clearly states on the form though "do not book or make arrangments untill you have your new passport.
So if you cant go on that booked holiday, then only yourself to blame really.
Its even worse if you need to claim ESA or the new PIP.
Some people are still waiting since February, for a service that should take "up to 6 weeks"
Cuts in service, actually mean less service after all.

I applied for a renewal for my son in April using the online service. You still have to send all the documents off, but you can check the status of the application all the way through, and get emails from them as well.
I got his new passport 4 weeks later, and his expired one back the day after.
He's a very excited boy now! |

Also think it depends when you apply, though current cuts in service do not help, and is costing more as Teresa May has had to provide a free service to some, talking of teres may why si she still in her job? anything with her majestys signia on that she manages is a mess Police force, immigration, passport office, any other manger would be sacked. |
