I've been watching this for the last 30 minutes whilst recovering from the rigours of an afternoon nap. Crikey, I'm not sure if I'm still asleep. It is so underpowered. I'm waiting for something of note to happen.
Phasers set to stun.
Are there any fans of this film out there? |

I've only watched the first of the new ones (have the other here waiting) and I was actually reasonably impressed with it also. |

Apparently this was Gene Roddenberry's vision for Star Trek. Thanks Christ he got pushed upstairs when Next Gen started. Its a mess - some of it hasn't been edited properly and the backgrounds weren't painted in properly. Wrath of Khan is better in every way. |

"Great film from 1979"
I think thats one of the important things to remember...it IS from 1979....
in fact I think it really should tie in with the origin of the borg perhaps.... |

As a regular at the Star Trek convention ( held in my front room) Id have to say I'm a bit of a fan. I love wearing my all in one lycra Trekky uniform an banging my Vulcan ears on. . Would be quite illogical not to. |

I think if you take into account when it was made it's fine. Scripts no worse than an episode of the show. It was trying to ride on the wave created by Star Wars for that genre. And I'm not sure, but think it was the first TV/film tie in we'd seen. (Not counting the gheyfest of Batman)
Try watching Voyage Home and you'll see, the first one wasn't so bad!

I like both, however..starwars is more a fantasy about kings queens cowboys n aliens.. startrek was/is about the exploration of mankind/space and whomever we encounter. Many of startreks concepts have a scientific backing and many well known astrophysicists have helped in the show. |

Both of which pale into comparison to Firefly.
Although there are people out there who like all sci-fi, without having to diss other people's likes. |

Sorry but I wasn't 'dissing' anyone.
I love sci-Fi and agree with the poster after me about the science in the Star Trek film/series.
All I said is I don't understand them.
Each to their own.
No offense intended. |

How Firefly never got a second series I will never know.
I don't think it was screened here til after it was cancelled anyway, and I never watched it until a few years after. But I remember several times shouting at the screen "They cancelled this????"
It's now in my boxset collection of shows that should have been. Along with Mongrels and Ultraviolet. |

I much enjoyed the series too, although it did start to go a bit haywire towards the end.

The Motionless Picture (as I call it) suffered from a number of issues - there is a director's cut which is slightly better than the theatrical cut, but overall the script was sadly very weak and the pacing was awful.
...and what's with the Starfleet onsies? Mind you, Wrath of Khan has those God-awful rib-necked 'chunky knit' collars....
Still, its all better than Star Trek V |

Not this one....about half an episodes content in 3 episodes time frame.
The next one Wrath of Khan was much better
After that went downhill again.
The new ones are better tho - khan makes a prequel comeback... |

General consensus of opinion with star trek films is that odd numbered films are weak even numbered are better. Even the new ones follow this with the second being better than the first. Even flows into star wars with middle film of each trilogy being best. |

Will disagree with you there friend. Star Trek Into Darkness was terrible compared to the first (Rebooted) Star Trek. |

i remember watching this film as a child and thought it was brill, but last month we started from the motion picture and watched in order right through to star trek nemesis then watched the 2 new reboots and thought most of the early ones were utter garbage lol i was very disappointed in my poor judgment from memory, my 12 year old was disgusted in how bad the early ones were too lol. still enjoyed star trek 4 the voyage home...then star trek 5 oh my days say know more lol
personally first contact is by far the best trek films but we do like the re boots and love tng but that is us, we do love a bit of trek just not so much the early ones now ha ha |

There is a fan edit of Star Trek V called 'In Thy Image' which actually makes the story much much better, effectively re-cutting it as a two part TV episode. |
