Road rage

Just had my first real road rage experience I was just driving down the road as normal and some idiot just comes flying out of the side st how I missed him or how he missed me I have no idea I blasted my horn and flashed and the cheeky fuck wit gave me the wanker sign so I started to drive faster but as am in a van he left me behind a mile or so up the road his stuck at the light do I drive as fast as I can pull up at the side of him jump out and I have a bottle of water in my hand I run round the front he has his window open and I squirt the water right in his face while swearing my head off telling him to get out of the car he doesn't of course I grab him and he just starts to drive off so now am sat on a Tesco car park trying to calm down I have been here 20 mins WOW that wasn't good

I had an incident once with a boy racer. I met him later at a set of lights and got out and gave him verbal. It looked like he was about to cry. I felt awful afterwards.

i got a punch in the face for calling someone that cut me up a cunt.

to this day i remember the wankers number plate.

road rage is the scurge of the roads.

one of our drivers got attacked just sunday night.

car pulled out of a street in front of him and slammed its brakes on.

he couldnt go anywhere.

he got out to remonstrate with the other driver who tried to kick him in the nuts.

Possible damage limitation comes to mind on the off chance he called the fuzz. It would be hard to deny the water but I would and admit to nothing as its impossible to prove either way unless there is cctv about. Worst case it could get you arrested and charged. Not a clever thing to do but its done now think on before repeating though as it can land you in hot water.

We had a road rage incident near where I used to live,someone ended up being stabbed to death in front of his girlfriend by a very well known criminal

I would just have let it pass

Nothing personal against the person here, who I'm sure regrets his behaviour. But to get out of a vehicle with the intention to assault somebody is the sort of thing that should be reported and if I were attacked in such a way I'd be grateful if somebody did report them.

After driving in countries that have no highway code and genuinely fearing death by driving I stopped cursing drivers in this country and now just slow down, smile and wave - especially the ones honking and flashing up my arse - although I've always liked that

So lets take the cars out of the equation and recreate the scenario. OP is walking down the street and someone almost bumps in to him. OP's response is to give him a mouthful, other person gives him a mouthful back and tried to leave the scene. OP chases him, threatens him with violence and throws a drink over him... Because that is basically what happened and without cars the OP's behaviour would be universally condemned.

But because he was cut up and in a car his behaviour is somehow seen as justified.

Just been reading on my local papers website that someone was arrested today after a road rage incident, he's being charged with attempted murder after stabbing him in the chest. There was a collision in Cornwall, and an arrest in Somerset. When you go chasing after people things get out of hand.

We had some twat undertake us on the m5 one night.. we were in the first lane not the middle.. and then pulls on in front of us and brakes hard.. we swerved to avoid him and gave him some verbal - he gave some back and then just speeded off a bit into the distance - we could see him try this again to another car and we could just tell he was either trying to cause a rear shunt ( insurance ) or was looking for a Fight !!!

We called 999 and reported what we thought would be a Drink Driver at 2am on a very quiet motorway..

So folks - Keep a cheap pay and go £10 fone in your car and don't register it.. wait until some twat really annoys you so much that its just worth it ?? !!

Then use the phone to call the cops and report a suspected Drink-Driver or a gun in the car..

It really is amazing how quick that so many Police cars can appear from nowhere..

It was a near miss, not an accident. You were justifiably angry, but I don't think that gives you the right to assault him. Fair enough, squirting water in his face probably wouldn't do any harm - unless he was wearing contact lenses that you may have dislodged, he could have been a tracheostomy patient (or "neckbreather") who could have suffered choking from water in the airway (my Father-in-law is one) and quite a few other conditions where water squirted into the face can cause immediate health problems. Perhaps just a good talking to next time, or let it slip and chalk it up to experience.

I agree call the police, even saying you suspect someone is d*unk driving is acceptable. But saying someone is carrying a gun is just bonkers.

Waiting police time is quite a serious offence. But getting someone spread eagled on the ground with armed police surrounding them is just madness.

Call the police and tell them someone is driving recklessly/dangerously on a motorway and they will respond. I suspect they are a little more suspicious of unsubstantiated claims of a gun.

We are but mere animals which really the law cannot always align with our actions as human nature and instinct is hard to fight and not always the "right" thing to do.

I had a major road rage incident where another driver ran me into some cones because he was so worried that I may get I front of him as one lane was shut off .. I pulled back out behind him stuck my fingers up and ranted a bit to which he jammed his anchors on as hard as possible and I hit him up the arse. Not hard but we collided I pointed for him to pull over but he wouldn't anyhow I overtook him called him a twat and carried on... Unfortunately for him when I was In tescos putting fuel in and looking at why my bonnet was a little up at the front he pulled In.... I won't go into details but the manager wanted to call the police so I waited for them as he was taken into a back room in the store.. 20mins later they still not turned up so I asked the manager where the old bill were and he said the other chap didn't want them to come , to which I replied of course he chuffin didn't (I had already demanded insurance details from him to which he wouldn't produce even though in the back of my mind I knew I hadn't a leg to stand on as I shunted him.) I said it's ok get him out here and we will sort it out. He wouldn't come out the coward. At the time I was pretty irrational and to be honest with you folks it was the last day I ever took citalopram for depression as I found they levelled me out but when I popped I really bloody popped and I'm not a thug or an idiot but that day had things gone different I would probably have been banged up .

Being out on the road is a great way to train yourself to react more appropriately to other idiots etc and their behaviour. Most of us have elevated stress levels, so what better place to master the skills of relaxation, when there is abundant opportunities to get more wound up etc. Stress is a killer, and most things really are not important. The best win is when others are ignored and you increase your relaxation. The more you do this, the easier it becomes - and after a while, just like driving, it becomes automatic and you dont need to think about it. And you keep your health and sanity.

This is the true-ism I drive by, I know I have made mistakes, and got away with it because the other driver in my vicinity didn't also make a mistake. I make a concious effort to make up for my mistakes by avoiding others when they do something stupid...

OP's first error was to use the horn as a swear button, this fuelled the adrenalin which led to the consequent mistake of chasing an idiot.

I would just like to say. ...a similar thing once happened to us. A taxi driver went through a red light and smashed into the side of us - both of our (then very young children) in the car.

He later asked someone to lie for him - getting the facts wrong and proving himself even more of an irresponsible idiot.

Yes we all make mistakes but these kind of mistakes can have very serious consequences, I fully understand this anger and hope the idiot driver that pulled out thinks twice before being a cocky little prick again, driving like an arsehole and not having the decency to fucking apologise.

People like this should not be on the road in the first place.

Yes - of course.

Like all these kinds of stories there is potentially another version of the truth. Perhaps one where an idiot was driving down a road too quickly, somebody pulled out not realising the person was approaching so quickly - then suffered that person honking their horn, flashing lights and then at the next junction was assaulted by them while unable to react due to being stuck in the car by their seatbelt. And so in fear of their safety accelerated away.

I'm not suggesting the original version is false - but it amuses me that some people jump to defend based only on one version, to get across how tough or 'badass' they think they are.

What we do know is that the person that started the discussion has admitted to having been out of control, having had a desire to inflict harm and having assaulted another driver. None of that is defendable. He can consider himself fortunate he wasn't greeted with a crowbar to the face and that instead the other driver sensibly drove away.

I wasn't driving irresponsibly I was driving at 30 mph when some idiot decides to come flying out of a side st with no thought what's so ever with what was coming just missing me because I slammed my breaks on this is when I blasted my horn and flashed to which he replied by giving me the wanker sign that when I put my foot down but me being in a van and him a Mercedes I wasn't catching him we are not talking about a young lad here this was a man between 30 and 40 years of age who should know better just like I should of

few years ago I was victim of road rage,this old fella forced me off the road was driving so fast he smashed both our mirrors to pieces, when I got out to have a word it became heated, ended up he stuck the nut on me,I was sorely tempted to batter him, but having my kids in car thought it would not be a good example to them.

Went to court, he was given a heavy fine, I got £300 damages, turns out he also had history of wife battering , genuinely nasty little man.

Got cut up by some nob in a BMW convertible ( other cars are available ), who, after I had made a genuine gesture, not rude, that he was perhaps not right in the head, proceeded to slow down, and get behind me ( it was the A41 dual carriageway) and tailgate me whilst shouting and gesticulating like a madman at me. He was so caught up in his tirade that he hadn't noticed me pull into a police station and stop. Got out of his car and continued.....only to realise where he was. I asked him if he wished to continue the conversation inside. He didn't.

A new up himself dentist annoyed me one day with his bad attitude.i was standing just outside the dentist building cursing him inside my head when a car with nobody in it slowly started moving backwards in the car park..it was on a slope so gradually picked up speed until it smashed into 2parked cars and a concrete post causing lots of damage before coming to a stop.everyone ran out of the near by shops and the dentist rushed past me towards the car with his hands on head cause it was his. .i looked up to the sky,and walked away with a big cheesey grin . .spooooky

Nobody is innocent, some are a lot worse than others, but we all get in the car with the events of the day on us, so drive tired, stressed, angry, whatever distraction.. luckily there is room for that in the fact that the driver you pull out on, break late on etc. is hopefully in a relaxed and alert mood and will avoid the accident. When two or more inattentive drivers attempt to occupy the same space that's where pain and broken cars / people happen.

The problem with road rage is it often puts two people in the same space.

In my experience a horn is almost never used properly, it is supposed to only be sounded to warn someone of your presence before they do something stupid, but all to often it is used to call the other driver an idiot because you had to slow down / stop.

Seriously glad this one appears to have worked out OK and we are not down a fab member.

Then you left your car assaulted the other driver with a weapon, and attempted to drag him out of his window. With the publicly stated intention of attempted murder.

I was standing on the sidewalk in LA once just minding my own business when this jerk power walked smack bang into me and then said "mind where you're going prick" before walking off. My immediate reaction was to shirk and almost say sorry. Then it slowly dawned on me that it was in no way my fault. I was feeling plucky so I shouted after him... "actually that was really rude of you". He didn't hear me so I power walked after him and repeated it. "Hey man that was really rude of you". Ok I'm painting the picture here...as you can tell I'm quite a polite guy even when I'm riled lol. So he tries shirking me off until he gets to a road where cars are going up. I catch up with him and say once more "that was really rude of you". He turns around stares at me like he's gonna kill me and shouts "you wanna make something of it?".

So what was my reaction? What did I do?

I stepped straight up to his face and said "YES!". He must've crapped his pants cause he ran off across the road then. Wow I didn't realise I had that in me...still can't to this day. Nice to know I've got that on reserve though lol

Talk about Road-Rage - We have just watched a Four Police Car "BOX_IN"

just outside Exeter today.. the Police Slowed the Traffic Down with a rolling road Block...

Up ahead - we could see what was happening and They seemed to stop the vehicle without much damage..

The Police never once pulled out any firearms or Tasers and never looked like scaring innocent civilian's or kids that were on the A30...

All they did was stick the cable-ties on and cart them off..

Seriously though, much as you we're initially 'wronged' by the twat, it would be you getting in to trouble if it was reported to the rozzers and witnesses/CCTV confirmed what happened when you caught up to him.

The roads these days are FULL of twats like him, just don't rise to it and you'll be ok. Easier said than done, as I chased down a van in East London that took my wing mirror off and tried to get away, when I was in my 20s and before mass coverage of CCTV...it didn't end well for either of us, and a valuable lesson in life was learned. Think this one through, and you'll be ok. And if the rozzers DO come calling, don't admit anything.

The bit where I said about knowing the Highway code was explaining that unless you know it and all the laws of the road, every time you drive a car you commit offences that could be reported. I then went on to say if you were reported by someone for breaking the law would you be glad that person had reported you?

We have all done stupid things behind the wheel of a car that we have got away with and then sat back and realised what we have done. It doesn't mean everyone should get done for it. If you say you have never done anything wrong driving, that means you are the person that causes the accident and drives off totally obvious... Which makes you worse...

Road rage is very understandable, we all have the fight or flight response when we feel ourselves threatened, and if the person who threatens our safety then makes a rude gesture and runs away we will give chase. It's how we are hard-wired. We are also hard-wired to be increasingly more aggressive the more secure we feel.

Now add to the above all the 'advances' in vehicle passenger safety, crumple zones, airbags et al and the fact is we all subconsciously think we are driving round in tanks. (In fact we give our tanks harness scores (Euro encap scores) and aim to buy the strongest we can.) Is it no wonder that people drive more aggressively, take more risks, and provoke more road-rage incidents by their general behaviour behind the wheel of their 5* encap rated tank?

And before anyone lays into me for what I have said I would point out that the problem is so bad that the powers that be are now continually legislating to make vehicles softer and less lethal to the pedestrians that get run down by the 5* tanks!

To the OP I would say that many have pointed out that you are lucky that you did not get hit by a crowbar, hammer, baseball bat or dragged along road as the car sped off a second time, they are all correct. What you did was really quite stupid. Think about what has happened and work out what to do if you ever find yourself in the same sort of situation again (hint its very hard to drive a car without the keys) and the best way to really make someone think is inconvenience them by costing them time and if possible money, and get one of the 5 min rolling videos now available for motorists and mount it in front of your rear-_iew mirror so that you have a record of any future indecent for the police to see.

It's not really that difficult... Ignorance is no defence... So just because you don't know you are breaking a law doesn't mean you are not breaking it...

Secondly there are many times when someone causes or nearly causes a crash but is not actually involved in the crash. They then drive off totally ignorant to the damage they have caused...

So without looking it up, how many rules are there in the highway code? If you don't know them all there is a good chance that you contravene one or more every time you drive.

i think you may find that it is the latter rather than the former.

it appears that some people don't even know what the highway code is and are seemingly unable to differentiate between the contents of it and the laws of the land...

Ok. I'll spell it out for you. If you contravene the highway code (knowingly or not) if you have not broken a specific law you will be driving without due care and attention or consideration for other road users... That is an offence...

An example. You are walking down the road and there is a side road you have to cross. As you approach you see there is no car turning into the road. You start to cross, a car arrives and turns into the road, causing you to jump back. The car driver shouts, sounds their horn and drives off.

Example 2. A pedestrian is using a zebra crossing, the pedestrian crosses the front of your car and you drive off whilst the pedestrian is still on the crossing. That is a specific offence... Yet it something I witness regularly...

For those of you still struggling... It has been raining, there are puddles in the road. You fail to slow down or avoid a puddle, soaking a pedestrian. You have committed an offence. Yet an other thing you see every time it rains...

If you still don't understand, you shouldn't be trusted with a car...

Although road rage is wrong, some people need and deserve a slap. You never know... It might be the slap that wakes them up to that behaviour & makes them think twice next time & makes them realise it's not acceptable. A slap may actually save lives in the future.

The latter is the case. UK courts follow the "Ignorantia juris non excusat" - "Ignorance of the law excuses no-one" caveat.

You are right about 'ignorance of the law being no defence'. However the offence committed is one of 'driving without due care and attention' contrary to the Road Traffic Act 1988.

NOT failing to obey the highway code!

As for the previous poster who mentions soaking a pedestrian, I believe the offences there is one of causing criminal 'damage to property' and 'driving without reasonable consideration on a road or public place' Road Traffic Act 1988 amended 1991.

The pedestrian has right of way. The driver has failed to obey that right of way. That is evidence of " Driving without due care and attention or consideration for other road users. Then you have the secondry offence of improper use of a horn and possible public order offences...

It's not difficult if you fail to follow the highway code, you are either commiting a specific offence or providing evidence for other offences like driving without due care...

He followed a driver, got out of his car and attacked the other person who was NOT threatening him but heading away from him.

I must admit I don't think it is that hard...

The guy stated what he had done. He realised that he had done wrong. He pulled over and calmed down and reflected on what he had done.

People said they hoped he would get reported. I then went on to say, if you did something wrong would you feel the same way if you got reported, adding that most people break the law or highway code every time they drive. I realise that what the OP did was extreme but feel there are a lot of people on their high horse who probably don't realise that they are breaking the law as often as they do...

I think the people saying he should be reported were referring to his assault on the other driver which has nothing to do with driving offences or the Highway Code. I may be wrong but that it how I have read it.

Though I'm not keen on the bit where he chased the driver down it is clearly the subsequent behaviour that is deserving of being reported.
