Is it karma or schadenfreude???

Jump to: Newest in thread

I often hear someone saying 'thats karma' when something bad happens to someone who has done something wrong.

Yesterday, I found out that someone who has caused my family and others a great deal of pain over many years, is dying a very long, lingering and painful death. I have to admit I am very pleased at this news, believing he deserves all he gets.

So is it karma or is it schadenfreude???

That's a shame, no matter what someone has done I would still never be glad they are suffering and dying!

It makes me no better person than they have been...

there but for the grace of god go I....

Somewhere in North Norfolk

Technically it can't be karma because karma applies to the next life, not the current one.

And therein lies a conundrum for me. I would never usually revel in someone's demise. But this person has done so many terrible things in his life. I dont believe he ever regretted his actions that affected so many people.

Definitely schadenfreude, just be glad that person will not be bothering your family anymore.

That's as may be but let it go or you will regret feeling this way

If you do not let it go then you allow him to continue to have that effect on you..

There are some nasty people in this world that are here to challenge us. The way I see it, is to protect the ones you love.

I have been in a similar situation, the person died of a horrible death.

I did think it was 'karma' when I heard about it BUT I had absolutely no pleasure.

He had a family, kids and grandchildren that had nothing to do with what he had done to people.

I take no pleasure in people's misfortune, even if they are the 'bad guy' what would that make me!? A person I would not like to be that's for sure.

The hatred that sees someone revelling in someone else's demise is a cancer that corrodes your soul.

To call it karma would imply all the staving children in the world have done something so bad in their short lives that karma has decided to punish them with a long lingering slow agonising death...

Which is all utter bollix....

However for those people who do believe in karma.....

Surely they would have to accept that in the event where someone takes pleasure from another persons suffering creates a situation whereby karma should also punish that person for their willingness not to show compassion...

It's all utter bollix

I remember you once saying people had no dignity for rejoicing about someones demise / death.

I don't want to be nosey ( well I do but won't ask the full question of what did they do ) but without saying what it was they had done, was it an illegal act?

i wouldnt feel pleased i would feel relieved though. its not your fault hes dying and i think bad people do deserve what they get. when my gran was dying i was sort of glad because i was expecting a baby and she had told my sister i shouldnt keep it because i wasnt married and she hadnt spoken to me for years also my mum and dad dislike her saying she wasnt a nice person. thing is she was old so she would of died soon anyway however i felt about it.

Hmm, I think about as far as you could go would be to say 'Sorry, not bothered', ie indifference, but to take pleasure in his suffering, surely you are inviting the very same 'laws of Karma' to work against you?? I would say let it go too.

A point you made though was that when other people did what you are doing you didn't agree as it didn't affect you personally......but it may have affected them personally in one way or another....so why is it any different?

I am not trying to compare the two at all , just the effect someone can have on a persons life for them to want them dead.

In that case. Yes. Highly illegal and he was imprisoned many times for his crimes.
