It all depends what you want to use it for. I have a MacBook for work and actual computer type stuff and still use my trusty 3rd generation iPod for when I'm out and about and browsing. The new PowerBooks are so slim you may as well get that rather than an iPad. |

Save yourself a fortune and get a nexus device.
Unless of course you want an actual PC.
Really before suggesting anything else I should ask what it is that you want to use it for?
If its just a bit of internet and email then a tablet will do the job... Do you want it portable (7") or a bit better for movies (10")? |

Well I'm quite happy using my iPhone, I didn't know if the bigger ones had anything special in them for everyone to be buying one.
My son likes to down load films and music (without paying though!)
He likes YouTube too |

If you are downloading films etc. Then you are more likely to run into play so issues on an iPad (based on my old iPhone 3g).
Laptops and PCs are easy enough to update when new codecs (used to play back video) etc, android devices play back petty much anything between one of two applications (MX player and vlc).
I use my nexus 4 for most my internet and email these days. We have a nexus 7 too. Both are great, the laptop really only gets fired up to stream stuff via a VPN or to do some serious typing - you can get nice mini keyboards now for tablets though. |

Nexus are Google devices.
You can get them from the play store.
Have a bit of a look about as sometimes other places have a bit of a bargain on.
Best bang tablet for the money currently I think is the nexus 7 (2013).... |

Yes! Has been in the news over the last couple of days...
According to Apple it is only affecting their products bought in Australia.

Its like the app store on iPhone but for android devices.
Just do a Google search for the nexus.
The 10 has been out a while now so getting cheaper, less than £200. Has a higher resolution screen than the iPads. There is talk of a new model but no release dates yet. I've got one and its fine for everything I want it for, occasional movies and internet etc. Oh and work because I'm going to claim the cost back against my tax... |

Any iPad type will do for a bit of browsing or surfing the net/email etc....but no better than many tablets at half the price. Biggest problem with iPads is the lack of decent connectivity to other devices etc.....
Avoid!!! |

"Take a look at nexus or samsung products before you spend your cash."
The Nexus 10 is made by Samsung, but better value for money than equivalent Samsung tablets. The newer nexus 7 iirc is made by Asus. |

You can transfer files from a laptop or PC to watch on the tablet.
Just looked and there is a utorrent app for android so it is possible to download and watch torrents on an android device. |

Any android tablet of which the nexus is one. Most tablets that are not made by apple are android, there are some windows tablets as well. Android is the operating system, like windows on a PC or laptop. |

my 'tablet' cost me £52 from tescos, but that was on offer, its £109 now.. its an archos gamepad..
touch screen is good..games can be decently high end..most importantly, I can play games via the built in pad/joysticks(that can also emulate those touch screen buttons(I can map them to different buttons/sticks of the device).I can use wireless and web etc etc..all good for me..and I hardly really use it..I prefer my laptop over anything to be honest..even though its old now.
remember also...some video files can be really low in megabytes for the particular device to be played on |

All this IT stuff gets on my nerves. We all got emails in work today to say that we were getting new PC's, but what they actually said was, your work station (desk) is due to be upgraded. You will be receiving a new "Access device"
for christ sake, what is wrong with. You will be disrupted for 1/2 hour whist we replace your PC. xx |

Do you need one at all?
What are the devices you have not doing for you that you want to do?
Or do you think you might be missing out on things that you don't know about?
If what you have is doing all you want, do you need anything new? |

If you don't know what you need you probably don't need it, it's OK to want it, in that case buy the pretty one.
Failing that as said many times above list what you want to achieve then you can get proper advice on what will get you there. |

Also like to add that it can seem the right thing to do to purchase new when, eg your sons laptop is dieing. But it may be fairly easy to revitalise it. Even reinstalling windows may make it almost like new, if he backs up his stuff and clears crap off. Otherwise a cheap upgrade with some ram may be needed. We are often too fast to dump stuff and live in a throwaway society, but we can learn to save from spending a lot of money that we dont need to. |
