Ankle Fusion

I broke my ankle very badly a few years back, and recently I've been having a lot of pain and can't walk. The likely route will be I need my ankle fused.

Has any one had this done? Or could shed any light, on what it's like?

Is that just the ankle joint or subtalar joint as well?

As soon as you break a bone, arthritis can set in, that is proberly what is happening.

Yes it's definitely because of how badly it was broken, and due to this it will need fused.

Just worried about being able to walk afterwards

Have they tried / offered injections directly into the ankle to see if that helps with the pain?

From what I heard of ankle fusions its about 50/50 if it stops the pain (or it was when I knew a guy thinking of having it done)

I've not seen a consultant yet, but when I broke it my consultant at the time said I'm likely to need it fusing.

An ankle replacement isn't an option for me,

Edinburgh

It really depends what the whole situation in your ankle is... ie extent of the damage to your bones/tendons etc... cortisone injection may help with the pain. With fusion of any joint there is loss of flexibility and motion... So I would ask about the muscle loss (calf etc) but also about shoes as some people sometimes need an insert inside their shoes to make walking easier...

French here so I hope it all makes sense
