Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
The UK has many place names that incomers could never hope to know how to pronounce.
Happisburgh in Norfolk, for instance. I know how it's pronounced (Hazebrough), more by luck than looking at the spelling.
What local gems to do you have? |

We have a Kathrine St, and Thwaites is usually pronounced "thut" eg "Linthut" |

Ha ha how long a list do you want Likety?
The obvious one is Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
but most place names starting with an Ll causes problems and a lot will pronounce them with a Cl so clan instead of Llan |

"It's the same when you go abroad though, you ask for somewhere and they have no idea because you pronounce it wrong."
Going across the county border is abroad.
Bicester is Bister and easy to get. Plus, the Chinese manage that one.

Another that comes to mind is Grosvenor
I had to give a forum user the pronunciation for Grosvenor recently.
" Lol I have a road near me called Beauchamp Way and when I said it like "bow shamp" I was quickly corrected and felt such an idiot |

Two places in Ireland that I thought I was in at the time. Balinagh (Mayo) I was actually in Balinagh but pronounced Balinyah (Cavan). Another time I wasn't in Mitchelstown (Cork) but in Mitchelstown[down] (Limerick)
Don't even get me started on Beauchamp place in Knightsbridge |
