'Trial' by social media

Having had social networking accounts and obviously a profile here, I am a little bit bemused as to how we have arrived at this societal junction where people choose to create the spectacle of a Roman Arena over what quite often turns out to be no more than a bump in the road of life.

Why do people feel the need to play out life and all it's ups and downs to a largely disinterested and detached audience rather than just trying to garner empathy, sympathy and support from those closest to them ?

I say 'ups and downs', but let's face it, we get to hear more about the downs than the ups. That's where the drama usually lies after all.

Whatever happened to families sticking together and looking after their own in private, without feeling the need to broadcast it, get their version of events over, lambast the 'guilty' and draw others into the maelstrom of emotion ?

In many situations I can understand frustration, I can understand upset, I can understand anger, I can, to a degree, also understand a willingness to want to level the score.

Where I lose faith, however, is in the willingness to play it out so publicly for all to witness.

It just leaves a real bad taste in my mouth.

It's all just a little bit too Jeremy Kyle for my liking and what I hate most is how easily others get drawn in.

I may even have been guilty of that myself on occasion and afterwards felt like I have let myself down by doing so.

Sorry, that couldn't wait til next Thursday

Never mind though, at least it wasn't another UKIP thread

I find it truly bewildering why people play their life for all to see... but as always, it is their choice.

Although, I am totally against the medical diagnosis threads, for god sake contact a specialist site/helpline. If living with an illness and looking for shared experiences, that is different.

I do think it is an addiction to drama & attention, or a part of their life that lacking in support and/or love.

Kent

I bumped into a friend of mine the other day, her bf knows my ex, she asked me what had been going on as he's been all over FB calling me a witch and saying about not being able to see his son (which he does once a week with supervision) she was surprised when I told her what had happened with him smashing up my house d*unk at 6am with my lad scared shitless of his crazy dad.

I choose not to put every detail of my life on FB and yet now everyone probably thinks he's done no wrong and I'm a cow because I don't publish the details and they only see his side.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Social media has just become the newest fifteen minutes of fame channel. Unfortunately, the fifteen minutes has reduced to about three now so repeated "downs" in life are needed to get the "ups" of people interested in the laundry being aired.

Trial by social networks? Roman arena? Come on...

We put up pictures of ourselves, write a couple of lines or a few paragraphs about who we are, and then wait in line as people parade past us judging flippantly whether we're sexy or not...

Trials? Roman arenas? Heck welcome to the friggin Grand Colosseum...open the gates and let in the lions...Fab is surely all these things on steroids

I find facebook illuminating, but do irritate people on it. When someone shares something, I tend to look into it and then post a link to Hoax-Slayer, thatsnonsense or ask if there is any actual evidence that the person they are sharing a link about has ever done anything and it's not just a grudge being worked out. I don't get many thanks for that.

i do it, cant really think why.. facebooks been part of my life since just after i left school.

Guess its like a diary i can re read and reflect on, interact with friends and family and of course upload countless photo's of mine and my daughters adventures.

If people dont want to see it and share our shenanigans they can opt out of seeing my newsfeed or simply unfriend me

Im not gonna change how i use it.

Don't me wrong, I think FB can be great fun and it is nice to see people adding to their timelines.

Where I don't get it is when it gets used by the 'he said, she said' crowd for points scoring, kudos and quite often aggression.

Statuses are often updated just to provoke a reaction or 'get at' someone without actually approaching them and clarifying whatever the issue is 1 to 1.

Maybe I am just old fashioned ?

oh right, nah dont think ive ever used it for that purpose.. might have had a rant once or twice but never to get nasty or to have a public argument with someone.

Must admit there are times with Facebook when I just think 'really'...some of the private information people put out there for all to see just baffles me. In the past I've seen a married couple have a full blown argument on the status update of one of them...neither of them seemed to appreciate me telling them that maybe such a discussion should be in private between them, not in plain _iew of friends, family and their 7yr old daughter who has a profile too (yes at 7yrs old, and nope none of it is private!). I have also been friends of both parents of children where they have split and watched them slander each other on their status updates, again with the children often having their own profiles and being friends with both parents.

Think so many people seem to forget that just because they aren't physically with these people they are friends with when they type their posts they are still communicating with them, or at them in many cases. It's the whole keyboard warrior attitude where people assume they are safe because they are behind a screen without thinking of the consequences of what they type, and then becoming the wronged victim when called on it as they were just saying what they thought!

I've deleted and hidden so many people because I don't need their drama in my life, I've enough of my own to contend with

I tend to use Fbk now and again. Mainly to keep in touch with friends and family.. I use it for fun and a giggle.. Can't be doing with the whoa is me comments. I am just as flippant, and sarcastic on there as i am on here to be honest. People who annoy me and constantly moan, whinge..tell me what the weathers like, what they had/are having for tea.. Usually end up in the Fbk bin.

I have more on this profile than I do on fb. It does my head in. All the "omg I don't believe what just happened!!" status updates, tons of replies saying "ohhhh no what's up, hope you're ok" etc etc then eventually an update from the person to say they burnt their toast...!

People share pics of their kids on there yet there's no privacy, everyone can see them. Posts about going on holiday 'my house empty... rob me!'

And then the ones that use other people's sad statuses to advertise their own woes.
