The UKIP are a very thinly veiled institutionally racist group of people who have little relevance in our society. However if for one minute we set this aside and look at their (ever changing) manifesto the economic policies they propose would send this country into the dark ages within the life of a Parliament. The Tories are trying to dismantle the welfare system but UKIP are sworn enemies of all who need the welfare safety net.

Before I get accused of being a bleeding heart Liberal I paid slightly in excess of £43k in income tax in the last financial year so I pay because I can and if it supports those in need then so be it.

I would leave this wonderful and civilised country if Mr Farrage and his cohorts ever came to power and I would live on a country that had a tolerant attitude to life and its population. Sad but its a fact.

there was a lot of protest votes given to ukip, the main parties will now just use the ukips popularity to tweak their own policies before the general election, immigration and Europe isn't the cause of all problems here, the accessibility to benefits and healthcare will be on lab and cons agendas now so maybe its a good thing

Well done for showing the main political parties that an increasing percentage of the UK populace voted for an Omnishambles of a party with a manifesto written by Alf Garnet than for one of the 'big three'

4 years ago, it would have been the Lib Dems winning all the votes, not UKIP. Thier 'success' is nothing more than one up from a spoilt ballot; their 'revolution' nothing more than a 'warning shot across the bows'.

The real revolution will (hopefully) be in the three main parties which may now actually spend the next twelve months getting back to real political and agendas rather than running themselves akin to being on 'The Thick of It'.

Though i'm not fully aware of all of UKIPs policies and political agenda (& at the risk of being shot down) mass migration is an issue which other parties don't seem to have a grasp on.

I am all for immigration, I'm a first generation Asian born and raised in this country. My father came here from a former 'empire' country when this country had a demand for labourers and even I can see that mass unrestricted migration has issues.

We are, whether we like to admit it or not, a small island nation with limited scope for expansion and are already bursting at the seams. There is barely any industry left here as there was 20/30 years ago and a limited market for jobs. At the same time we have no affordable housing & an abundance of people who can't afford to get on the property ladder due to short supply against an ever increasing demand. I definitely am not for UKIP or BNP or EDL (different name same type of people) but they are playing on the very real concerns people have about the future prosperity of this country.

Having said that I will also say we are to blame for some of it. I do believe that some people have the grown the mentality that it is their right by birth to be better treated than those of a foreign origin and be given 'first dibs' on everything and foreigners come second. That is the UKIP mentality which i despise (blame it on the foreigner policy is utter bollocks) and it plays to certain individuals. If anything I'd say the result is a reflection of peoples thoughts on their local area and the country and is a little concerning

Just my humble opinion (or mental ramblings) in the forums

Its clear the OP is in the minority in his view and the championing of The UKIP. That said its his democratic right to air his opinions and speak his mind. After all many made the supreme sacrifice and continue to do so in order that Mr Farrage can spout the ranting's of an angry uptight middle aged white man!

Can't wait to see what UKIP are going to change? Have they really made significant gains? I think this five minutes of fame is the best thing that can happen for them. To get the vote is the easiest thing but to deliver on it will be harder. The same way it happened for the BNP, once people realise they not going to change anything they will stop believing the hype

Why aren't people mentioning the registered sex offenders through Labour and Conservatives. (research it!)

OR the stuff that has gone at the BBC for over half a decade? It's been covered up by people right at the top for years!

Also, phone hacking scandals? Some our major politicians are best friends (and defend) people who hacked into phone of parents of murdered children!

People don't trust the government AT ALL anymore. I seriously think this isnt a protest. Most people I know from other EU countries are praying the whole thing collapses and that UKIP actually get power.

Personally? I don't like any of them at all...but I'll never vote for Labour or Conservatives because they truly are a party of perverts and delusional dingbats.

Country is fucked in some areas, and the more people scream "racist" at people, the more they'll revolt and actually vote...the results are coming through on our televisions as we type!

I just hope the parties in power now start listening to the general public. If you don't think the public is being ignored then you're living on a different planet!

Unfortunately there are a lot of people that are like Sheep, one goes they all go.

They don't have the ability to think or act for themselves.

Like most parties UKIP play on the one or two issues that seem to be the current theme sweeping the nation, and the Sheep follow.

They also know that the average member of Joe Public never read the small print so all their polices are not read.

When they get into power and apply these polices, then the Sheep start to say .......... I don't know who voted for them cause we didn't.

Fortunately the majority of people in this country can see through them that's why they will NEVER hold the balance of power.

So no need to hire the taxi quite yet.

I personally think that many people who voted for them have no idea what their policies are and like many of all persuasions have garnered their opinion from the media and it's scaremongering. I think people have seen jobs lost, money get tight etc. and feel that the answer is fewer immigrants. The three major parties aren't allaying the fears people have so they turn elsewhere.

Unfortunately the Greens have got a long way to go before they throw off their image of sandal wearing hippies who knit their own yoghurt. However, as I read policies, not just soundbites, I voted Green myself yesterday. No council elections in York but hopefully the Greens will gain a few European seats.

Cons 18 Councils 619 seats

Libs 2 Conncils 190 seats

I agree, just saying that if all this is just protest voting and no-one really wants UKIP, then voting Green was a better way to go for a clear conscience rather than a bigoted narrow minded party.

Unfortunately I think UKIP are on their way to being the 3rd party with the demise of Lib Dem and tiredness with the other two. Coupled with the fact they tickle peoples basest fears at a time of recession and wealth imbalance.

Do you not think that IF the big two political parties LISTENED to the voters, instead of consistently riding roughshod of the views of them claiming they have a mandate based on lying election promises/manifestos (which have happened election after election with these two parties) then people wouldn't be looking to a new party which is honest enough to say what it thinks. (Once again unlike the others who talk in riddles never answering a question)

A lot of voters sees the established parties as elite, swapping power between them and never making any difference. Why should the voters choose a party they believe in rather than constantly hoping for a change from identi-kit parties with identi-kit policies? UKIP are offering something different, and voters like that. Simple. If people would look into the policies of that party they will see common sense ideals, not racism/sexism/homophobia.

These are things enlarged by a press driven by worried established parties who have the same within there ranks.

I'm not racist, homophobic or sexist, but I believe that a change is needed and that no other party offers it. It seems I am not alone in these views

Just think of all those jobs we might have chance of getting. I've applied for over 20 this week with not a sniff. So yes I'm up for ukip to stand and put british people first for a change. Don't make a racist makes me proud of my country and heritage and strive for Britain to be great once again or am living in a bubble time will tell. Sigh
