i think i'm missing something here...
i keep waiting for people to start owning up about Ricky Gervais..
i personally think he is about as funny as a dose of the clap but that's just my opinion  |

I find it irritating. The character has an unspecified condition, so it is impossible for me to know how good the acting is. I find it a little pathetic. I saw the dog being put to sleep tonight. It is a novel show, Im not sure I can say much more that is positive about it. |

I don't like his tv shows but some of his stand up is ok.

I love Derek, its one of my favourite programmes. I find it funny, touching and its written In a very sensitive way.
Lots of people express the opinion that it is a mockery of learning difficulties but that isn't so. Derek is a strong character, not one to be pitied or made fun of but someone who displays many positive characteristics.
I agree that sometimes Ricky Gervais comes across as rather egotistical. That aside he is an extremely talented writer. |

Actually you are wrong. In an inter_iew Rick Gervais was asked what medical condition Derek has and he said none. According to Ricky Derek does not have anything like autism, a learning disability etc. |

I watched one episode and don't agree with Ricky's acting because I couldn't tell if he was meant to be a service user or a worker? He acted like he was a service user but then he was too quick-witted which made me think he was actually a worker. Confused me. And why is there a random alcoholic sat on a chair all the time? |

What Ricky Gervais was saying, is that people with Autism are ordinary people, with the same emotions, feelings, etc as everyone else. And he wants us to look through the autism and see the person inside. J has worked with people on the Autistic Spectrum for many years, didn't want to watch it because she thought it would just be a piss take, but was hooked after the first 5 mins. Says he plays the part with sensitivity and poignancy, and has got the 'residential home' and its characters down to a tee. |

The man is a talent everything he touches is brilliant and they are all funny and sensitive in their own way, however i understand some people will.never like him or his work (marmite analogy was perfect) that aside i cannot see how people can slag him off personally when they have never met him.  |

I watch it, but I don't get it. I thought the office was amazing, it worked because the characters, the situation and the storyline were believable, anyone who's ever been stuck in a classroom or an office type of job could relate to much of it.
Here we have an old peoples home that has an autistic assistant? is he? and for someone reason (maybe I missed an episode) an alcoholic 30 something who is sex mad and has a caravan outside.
Whiff's a bit.
Anyway Ricky, sticking your lower jaw out, combing your hair forward and mispronouncing words does not make this programme a British 'Rainman' |
