HIV Testing at Tescos

I was interested to read that on Monday, I pilot scheme is being launched with free 1 minute HIV testing at a Tesco store in Berkshire. If its deemed a success, it may well be rolled out to other stores / areas. The main article is here : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-berkshire-27412147
Whilst normalizing testing this way (and making it very accessible) is very much a step in the right direction, would (potentially) finding out such devastating and life-altering news in such a public space (even though its in a separate room) not be better done in somewhere like a hospital or clinic with trained councilors and private rooms?
Thoughts? |

Its all about making it more accessible and with doing that have more people get their checkup. Catch it sooner, give more information and educate people. Its a good thing!! I think anyway! |

Ring, Ring : "Is that the insurance company, we have some interesting info to sell you on one of our customers".

In terms of perspective, its not being run by Tesco themselves, but by a charity working in Tesco's premises.
But I do like the suggestion of why the 1 minute service is not available at GP surgeries. It seems the most logical place outside of a specialist clinic and far more personal than a Tesco. |

Do existing swingers clubs hold a similar "pop in" check at any time? Would seem a sensible place to do one by a third party.
One in Blackpool does I think."

"I rather piss ina tube and send it of lab testing lol.
It's a blood test Ah yes, I was thinking about clymedia test lol."
For those people who just get the 'piss in a jar and send it off' tests done; you are not getting a full screening. Therefore you cannot say you are tested as disease free.
You need to go to a clinic or your gp to be sure you're still ok after swinging. |

The last time I got my results I got a phone call when I was expecting a text, that frightened me for a split second.
So no I don't think I would like to be in tescos for tests or results.
I would rather be in my own home ect, but saying that, the text can come through anytime and you could be anywhere at that time.

I'm pretty sure you'll only have blood taken in tescos.
which will then be sent off for testing.
You won't get any results there and then,as diagnosis usually takes a few months.
Unless they've developed a new quicker diagnosis testing kit.

" I have been tested for HIV syphilis, and the usual internal, all took two weeks, three weeks other time.
It is hepatitis that takes longer.

Well I think if your prepared to hear the worst if your worried, it may beat playing the waiting game elsewhere.
As I said a text or call can come from the clinic at anytime anyway.

i cant understand all the negative and flippent remarks personally ..trying to make testing 'normal' ....ie bringing it to a supermarket is a great idea ..lots of teens have multiple partners every weekend and would probably use the service |

yeh it happens ...everyone regardless of their job makes a mistake ...if a baker does it ..he puts the bread into the bin and starts again ...if a medical person does it everyone goes up in arms ! |

A bit of manky bread or a slightly deformed eclair rarely has life changing results though. |

Blackpool Connections hold a full STD clinic usually on the first Friday of the month, it's run by the local GUM clinic.

No Doubt - that Tesco - will farm this out to someone else.. !!
take the heat of them - if it all goes wrong !!
maybe they could get the farmer that they pay 11p a litre of Milk to do the tests as well.. |

I had my test done in a gum clinic In London ..some how they had got results mixed up..it took numerous tests etc for them to then see I was negative and was later told I'd been given the wrong result....these things happen I was just glad I was negative rather than be bitter about what happened |

On the other hand, the bakers salary will,at the top end be around twenty thousand pounds.
Where as the doctors salary will,at the lower end be around eighty thousand pounds.
So we have higher expectations of doctors, and they are paid accordingly.
It's highly unlikely if the baker makes a mistake,
Any family will have to make funeral arrangements.
Not so unlikely for the doctor. |

Great idea, and they've got Sauvignon blanc on offer, although I guess if it comes back positive, a few bottles might be required.
Before I get berated I do take it seriously, just been tested by my doc( all clear thank god). But always play safe, |

Im all for preserving our nhs, so would prefer the services in places that are not for profit. They need to be accessible, good hours and the right services. Im concerned for confidentiality too, as bad news could travel locally very fast. Also, it is not a laughing matter - people joking here, consider whether you would joke about cancer suffering people too, for comparison. I worked with a guy who died, and it is just not funny. |
