Proud but Scared

Our 10 year old daughter came in from school tonight and announced she wnts to cut off all her beautiful long hair in aid of The Little Princess Trust,she lost her best friend last year to cancer and she has raised quite a bit over the year doing various sponsors, but im in a quandary.I am so proud of what she has achieved and raised for her cancer charity but really don't want her to cut her hair,its really long and always been her pride and joy

It sounds to me like she is aware enough that she is making a sacrifice, so I would sit down, explain you are proud of her but discuss your reservations.

The decision will then lie flatly with her and if she decides it is coming off, support her.

On another note,

to both of you for raising a socially and morally responsible child.

So many children are not afforded that luxury.

Mark is all for letting her do it , I guess its a woman thing me not wanting her to cut it , but I will allow it , just guess I want her to realise whats she's doing but for a 10 year old her views on life matters really surprise us at times,she's a very head strong child

Be proud... Donating hair is an amazing thing to do. My mum had cancer and I know how much her wig mattered to her while she was going through treatment.

Whatever happens, sounds like your daughter has an amazing heart

What a lovely thing to do.

I suspect fundraising is a way of coping but understand your fear. Maybe tell her sget can but not for a few weeks so she can consider whethet she really wants to make such a huge sacrifice.

You have a socially conscious daughter and should be proud. As above, explain your reservations but say you will support her decision. If she regrets her decision after, then it will be a life long lesson which may stand her in good stead for her future.

She doesn't have to have it shaved and hair grows around six inches a year.

At ten this is an empowering act and will have resonance in her life for a long time - especially as a memorial for her friend. Ten is also an age where we begin to move on from childhood into the beginnings of pubescence. It may be that she is ready to cut her hair and begin a new stage of her life with a new look. That she can do this in a way that honours her friend and others who are struggling just shows a glimpse of the amazing woman she will eventually become.

My youngest daughter had her head shaved last year for cancer research. It was done in the middle of a field at a Summer fair and I fought to hold back the tears as it was done - she was 17 and a girl's hair is a very important asset. But I was also phenomenally proud. What a mixture of emotions!

Your little girl is very brave and selfless for wanting to do it - support her in that. And as someone said, her hair will grow back (and faster than you'd think)

This is a lovely gesture for your daughter to make. Having lost her young friend is terrible. I have long hair too and not sure if I could cut or shave mine tbh. Not through selfishness but pure nerves. I lost my dad this way. Slightly swerving, the Carol Jackson story in Eastenders and other things I have seen recently in reality, have made me think id either crop my hair or shave it if it provides wigs for people. Anyway, waffling over, she sounds a sensible young girl so id let her do it.

To your daughter it seems it's only hair and she has something more important in mind for it.

Let her do this and be very, very proud.

You can show her pictures of her shaved head when she gets older too to remind her what a huge heart she has always had.

Please, let this wonderful daughter of yours do it. So often, we as adults forget that they are capable of making these decisions but they really are. Taking control of her own body is a huge developmental responsibly and the respect she will gain for her own beauty will be immense.

Have a farewell hair party, ask a local top stylist if they will give her a stunning 'do' and tell her how proud we all are of her.

what an absolutely wonderful Girl,iv got goosebumps,a credit to you and a credit to herself,my sister had cancer and had a wig when her hair fell out,her 6 year old son chose it for her,it was a platinum blonde bob,not her colour or style but she wore it with pride because he chose it,and wonderful,careing,treasures like your daughter made it possible,bless herxx

You should be so proud of your lovely thoughtful daughter.

She will still be the same beautiful person with or without her hair & should be admired for helping raise money for such a worthy cause.

I (mrs) have shaved my hair off twice now & it feels so good doing it for charity.

Her hair will grow back on no time & it will look great xx

What a great kid to be that aware. Well done for your work. She will be aware of cutting her hair, so have a chat with her and reconfirm why you are worried but I think by the sounds of it she knows what she wants to do.

Get a sponsorship thing up here too maybe? Do your bit to support her in this endeavour.

Your daughter is an absolute star probably a rarity so I think you should let her do it. However sit her down and have a chat pointing out that she might not like it and may regret it but also assure her it will grow back quite quickly. Good luck

I have seen a video of a little girl having her long hair cut and she put it in an envelope to send to the charity that makes wigs for people who have lost hair so maybe do that with her and perhaps ask if you can visit the factory that makes them

I felt really odd about squidge having her long hair cut short worried that she'd lose the 'princess' and girlie look but its actually grown on me.

Final update on our thread,

our daughter raised £1,802 for the little princess trust,thanks again for everyones kind words and for calming my nerves,and a special big thank you to all who donated to her charity too,ive put my profile picture to show her certificate if you want to look

Just read a few more of the replies and see that your daughter got a bob, so she might get away with being mistaken for a boy, my daughter went for the Emma Watcon look, she looked really cute just a shame people kept thinking she was a boy lol.
