Help with me telly please.
Jump to: Newest in thread
My gorgeous loft apartment is lacking in two cables to enable me to record one thing and watch another on the tellybox. I've been told I can get some gadget to fix this problem but I can't search for it as I've not a clue what it is.
Anyone? |

I've got sky (hate it, expensive crap). When they came to plug it in, I was told that the building has a single cable set up, not double so if I want to record something, I can't watch another channel. It's not a major problem but is a PITA. |

Ahhh, with Sky, in order to use the Sky box to record one channel while watching another you have to have a dual LNB if I recall - which is a dual cable set-up. One cable means you only have a single LNB on the dish. |

In that case you need a different dish and dual coaxial cables. The installer should have done this when he came to set the system up, unless it's a communal dish. If you have Sky you can download the Sky Anytime app and watch/download shows on your computer. X |

PITA - a flat bread, or Pain In The Arse.
Not to be confused with PITA-Kebab, which is slang for double-dipping (vaginal to anal) with no additional lubricant. |

I know what you need.
Check on the sky dish if there is there are any spare connections for another cable.
For each tuner in a box it needs a separate connector on the dish. Sky boxes that do't record have one connector, Sky+ boxes that record normally have two connections to the dish.
Standard Sky dishes come with just a single connection. They have a single LNB. For Sky+ or multi-room you need two connections to the dish, Sky normally fit a quad LNB allowing 4 connections. This allows for a Sky+ box in the main room and up to 2 additional standard boxes in other rooms.

Upgrade to the Sky HD box to get the dual LMBs. As an existing Sky customer, we rang them up asking to upgrade to the HD box & they supplied & fitted free of charge. We now have dual LMBs, HD, & can watch & record. |

Swap to Virgin, you can record 3 shows while watching a different channel and you don't loose your signal every time there's a gust of wind or a slight drizzle. Their internet speeds are far superior too. The only negative I foundafter swapping from Sky to Virgin is that it's slightly more expensive. |

I'd love to carry on with Virgin but they don't supply this city centre building. |

"Do you have a Maplin store local to you? Maybe they can help with what you need? X
Best suggestion so far, along with the fairy dust from VV."
It used to be up near St George's retail park, not sure if it still is, if not there's a Maplin near me, you can also buy the cable from B&Q . The only issue is where the dish is and getting good, safe access to it. |

I can't find my bloody electric meter in this place so the chances of finding a hidden dish is remote. I still have no idea what it is I need either. |

"best let a sky man do it then .. they have to change the antenna bit on the dish from a single reciever to a two reciever type and run the twin coaxes to it "
They told me there was nothing they could do and I'd have to live with it. |

You need dual coaxial cable. Depending on how tall your building is, my guess it would be on or near the roof.
I still have my old Sky+ dish and the cable, if I get a chance I'll get my ladders out and retrieve the cable for you but it may not be long enough or even possible to gain access to your dish to connect it. |

Ladders? You'll need scaffolding and a cherry picker! |

"Once again everyone is answering the question without actually reading it. The simple answer is you can only record/watch one channel at a time."
