So under pressure from friends and to raise some money in remembrance of a friend who died a year ago, I have agreed to do a half marathon. The furthest I have ever run without stopping is about 4k. I have 6 weeks so has anyone got any tips to help me get around without having to walk most of it?? |

Go to a specialist running shop and go on the gait analysis machine so they can fit you with the right running shoes, they will save you from injury.
Then get out and start training every other day should be enough and build up the distance by a K each week, a steady pace is more important to establish and walking is no shame it's better than not finishing......good luck |

We have nearly 20 people entered this year so not an option. I am going to be the oldest of the group and just want to avoid making too much of an arse of myself! |

When you have a goal to acheive, you'd be suprised how much you can acheive in 6 weeks. And anyway, even if you do end up walking part of it, at the end of the day your not taking part to win, your taking part to raise money for a good cause |

Luke's doing his first half marathon in September, he's brought some proper fitting running shoes so he doesn't do himself any imjury and goes out every other day training.. Each time he goes a little further so by September he should be up to running the distance required!
Good luck OP |

"No walking that's to easy run mate make the effort"
If you want me to run the whole way I really might need to think about a will and funeral arrangements! I will certainly need some massage help in the Hackney area afterwards!!
So the helpful advice so far, get some decent plimpsoles, take it easy, set some targets and slowly build up. Sounding like a plan... |

next year,
set yourself weekly achievable targets. Finding a pace to run at that suits you. For that if you can or have an ipod that you listen to music at that beat will help distract you and add distance to your training runs. End of each weeks training add 50% more to that run to push your endurance level. If you can train up to 2 thirds distance you should complete it on the day. But main thin is to set mini goals for yourself..... and the best of luck

Get a running schedule planned.Google it.6 weeks is a short time though .Do running at least 3 or 4 times a week. Start from doing 3 miles runs and then go further distances.
I used to do running btw. |

find a pace you are comfortable with and that you can maintain whilst training and stick to it !
if your mates go of at a pace you can run at let them go they WILL tire and slow down
no shame in walking |

oh and try not to get swept up in the moment and get over exited and go blazing off at the start stretch properly before and after every training session eat the right food before hand so you have the right fuel on board
online training and diet programmes will point you the right way here |

Well done you !
I'm doing the Chester Half next Sunday
First rule. ...
Don't expect too much of your first effort
2nd ..
Get a training program going, six weeks is long enough. I use and recommend Adidas MiCoach. There are schedules for beginners to experts
3rd ...
Enjoy it |

"its in memory of your friend - walking it doesnt matter xxx "
It is the competitor in me, if I sign up for something I want to do well. But in this case I suspect the mind will be willing but the body maybe found wanting! |

Unless you have a lot of transferable cardio fitness you are going to struggle. Even if you do you are going to struggle massively.
From zero to half in 6 weeks isn't impossible but it won't be pretty on the day.
Some of the advice on here will get you injured if you follow it. The best advice is not to do it. If you must lots of slow runs and run/walks to get used to being on your feet is my tip |

Thanks, I recognise it isn't going to be pretty. Am working on the basis I should be able to walk it in 3 hours, so anything better than that should be an achievement. Will be looking to raise some money so am sure people will expect me to put some effort in. |

You should be able to get round if your not bothered about the time. Just be prepared for it to be uncomfortable as you train for it, so be prepared mentally to carry on even if your body wants you to stop.
Id say don't cram too much training into the last week, as any training you do in it will not make any difference to your fitness as it takes upto 10 days for the body to benefit from it, and you will just tire yourself out for the half marathon.
