Just getting back into things after a layoff. Promised myself I would not get addicted like before.
Been doing triathlon for 20 year's, plus swimming, running and cycling event's plus gym,and martial arts, for longer. Now just want to enjoy it, not let it become all consuming and take up every bit of spare time I have.
So what do people do and what do you consider a reasonable amount? |

Having been away from gym for a few years have noticed more people spend more time on phones than working out. Grrrrrr |

At the moment I'm training for a Power Walking marathon next weekend. I don't do anything usually so I intend carrying on with the walking and maybe start running after I've lost a bit more weight. |

Ooh yes
I eat whatever I like, I know I'm lucky at the moment but it probably won't stay like this forever and then I will have to find the motivation |

Road cycle, twice a week at least, but upping it now as training for a short triathlon. Need to up my swimming too, as never done an open water swim before. Got a 40 mile charity bike ride coming up soon.
Do running, boxing and TRX (the straps hanging from the ceiling) twice a week. Loving the lighter evenings.

You will love open water swimming, its the best far far better than the pool, being close to the sea I tend to do most of my swimming there from now till October.
Some people get the deep water heebygebeeies. Now and then. But if you look there are plenty of organised swims in lake's nationwide. O w. Swimming is the big thing at the moment. Have fun it's the best. |

Wish I lived near the sea, to train in. A few of my friends do open water swimming and pretty long distances, as they do Ironman & one swam along a river for a chariy event. Hopefully I will be ok, as I have always been a good swimmer and never scared when out of my depth. I'm going to train in a local lake. |

I'm in the gym all the time, love it. Have lifted big weights for 25 years and competed as a weightlifter and a powerlifter. I still lift weights but not as heavy as I used to, I swim, do kettlebell circuits and like walking but recovering from a badly broken leg at present and waiting for a knee op |

I fully understand the addiction thing; I was a road and cross country runner, Nordic Biathlon racer and cyclist. I trained on average 5 days a week for 35 year then I had 2 heart ops in a year so had to take 18 months off.
I'm now exercising again but I don't have any agenda except to lose the 2 stone that I've gained and to enjoy myself.
When I was an Army Assistant Physical Training Instructor we thought soldiers that for a basic level of fitness 3 x 40 minute exercise sessions a week was enough. |

I do an hours circuit training twice a week. I do around 40 mins weight training at home every day. I also like to go running/jogging, and mountain biking over on Cannock chase when ever i get the spare time to do so. Finding the time when juggling work and a social life can sometimes be difficult though. |

Both of us do power lifting/functional type training (like crossfit but minus the stupidity) and some high intensity aerobic training 4 times a week.
But the biggest improvements come from nutrition as you can't out-train a bad diet!
So hard work and consistency with only 5hrs per week for exercise and the other 100+ hours of eating, sleeping and hydrating properly.
It's what goes in your mouth and at what time and in what quantity and frequency....

Not nearly enough at the moment.
About 3 years ago I used to swim a mile every morning, train (cardio and resistance) 4 times a week and go to a kickboxing class once a week.
The intention to get back to it is there. The motivation is lacking. |

Yeah was fully addicted doing ironman racing and ultra marathons. Working 50hrs a week then training 18hrs a week left little time for anything else but sleeping and eating forgot how to enjoy family and downtime.
Problem is now I have had a rest I have got lazy

Plus you can burn calories just by sitting on the toilet. 8 hours on it is the same as 1 hours worth of jogging. Although if you are constantly pushing. That 1 hours worth of jogging may go up |

Gym gym gym fuck it can be head fuck at times as it does take over your life with diet, training. I have just started again as had a little break over winter and to be honest I do seem to have a fresh approach to it as I realise you don't need to spend hours in the gym 1 hour max 6 days a week is plenty. cardio 2 of those the thing that is important is the diet get that right and technique in the gym and you don't need to spend hours you need energy to play after all the motto here is eat , sleep , train , sex , repeat !!!

It didn't take me too long to reach that point after putting some proper time into my pressing, its making significant improvements beyond that that's proving the tricky part. |

Cycling. At the moment mainly road work but MTB as well.
I'm aiming for 500 miles a month so i commute, two evening rides of around 30 miles and a longer ride at the weekend.
I'm getting into Audax'ing (long distance events) so upping my mileage. At the end of May i have a 100 mile audax on the 18th followed by a Coast to Coast from Walney Island to Whitby the weekend after, first day 106 miles & 2nd day 85 miles.
I'm not fast but i can do 29 miles/1865ft ascent in under 1hr 40 minutes. Fitness wise i suppose I'm better than average for my age group. |

"My current record in the overhead press is 75kg (my bodyweight at the time) for 3 reps, but I can push press it for 5, I'm trying to manage 90kg by the end of the year, the dumbbell I'm pressing in my pic weighed 45kg so I should have enough strength in my shoulders if I can get my technique down.
75kg, is that all
It didn't take me too long to reach that point after putting some proper time into my pressing, its making significant improvements beyond that that's proving the tricky part.
I was teasing
I wasn't sure, after all, weren't you once able to push press 100kg yourself?
I was indeed, when I was competing, not now though. "
Are there any specific techniques that help someone up to that level of strength in the press, or was it all just persistence and small weight increases for you? |

Eat right and train right adding more weight to failure and your body will grow as will the strength can't tell you enough the diet is important good luck.... beast mode helps too |

I started off as an olympic lifter so push presses where a staple of training. You just have to keep at it, obviously I can't comment on your technique but it is a technical lift, not all brute force! As a powerlifter I benched a lot and used chains, bands etc so my tricep strength was immense when competing, speed is very important too. Sometimes you seem to be stuck on the same weight for ages but just keep plugging away, don't panic and change things. |

I'm a big fan of just listening to your body, it will tell you when you're doing too much!
I used to do a lot of cardio but was constantly ill, picking up bugs/viruses. I've switched back to more weights sessions now, about 4 - 5/week, 2 or 3 spins and a hiit of some kind.
Feeling much better, on a mission to be able to do pull ups!! |

I know what you mean about 'not all brute force', with push presses you really have to get the bar as central into your centre of gravity as possible and keep it there, so as to best transfer the force generated by your hips into an upward motion, but its easier said than done as you tend to lose a lot of your concentration when you have the weight of a fully grown man pressing down on your chest. |

If you think of it like a grown man bearing down on you then you have mentally lost the battle and the weight has won!! You control the weight and you make it feel as light in your head as possible. Squats being a prime example, lifting big weights is a head fuck basically and if you doubt yourself in the slightest then you won't lift it. Its all in the mind, I'm totally mad so can overcome it lol |

I disagree its in the head if you think I now my brain saying I can do this 200kg dead lift and you try it your back may disagree start small work ya way up to you can comfy do 10 reps to failure then up the weight never try and jump in the deep end without first learning to paddle. Can't stress enough your technique has to be spot on other wise injury will follow and stretch aswell. Goggle if unsure and watch videos there is a lot of tutorials on techniques diet and advice. A master has once been an apprentice but a master listened that's why he can teach apprentices that want to listen. Some one mentioned listen to your body well said |

In my experience your mind set has a lot to do with it and can be the difference between success or failure. As an example, when I used to coach the junior team I would on occasion, tell a lifter the weight was 10kg lighter than it was particularly when they had a mind block over a weight, going from 95kg to 100 is a prime example as its not 2 figures, its 3 but its only a 5kg difference. One guy was stuck on 140kg bench, I knew he was capable of more, requested 150kg at a comp, told him it was 140, he lifted it easy. Another lifter couldn't do 60kg bench, lifted 57.5 easy but it blew her mind when she saw 20kg plates on the bar not the smaller 15's so I put it on as 2 x 10kg per side and she did it. |

Ok I see your point in using trickery as the increase was small to fool the mind the point I'm making is lift a weight that is comfy that your body can cope with. Bad technique and to much weight = injury. |

Understand that I've myself been lifting for a long time, and have heard many of the tricks like imagine there's a crane attached to the bar helping you lift it, magnets on the ceiling etc, and in my experience none of them worked, at least not for me - I remember on one occasion miscounting the amount of weight I had on a bar, lifted it, noticed it felt heavier than usual and didn't get the amount of reps I should have, despite thinking it was the same weight I'd lifted before. I've changed my focus onto more Olympic style lifting is because having lifted for as long as I have, I've come to realise that I'm not going to gain as much strength as I could just through trying to muscle up weights alone, I need to work on my technique and refine my lifting ability. |

If you are lifting too much weight with bad technique you have the wrong mindset Indeed lift a weight you are comfortable with but to be a successful lifter you have to push beyond your limit, but what is your limit? No one knows. I was stuck on a 120 bench for 2 years thinking that was it, then it went to 125, then 130. As a coach, I would never put a weight on the bar I didn't think the individual lifter wasn't capable of, its all down to whether they think they're capable of it, power of the mind! |

It's true technique is every think some people stack up the Olympic bar and growl and grunt and they just look arched back fat fuckers yes there strong but I'd like to be strong and defined strong for the caveman in me and defined for the cave woman perfect balance |

I was just stating it's not always in the mind it's in your lifting technique walk b4 u run. As my message goes out to the novice that may read this and think fuck yeah it's all in the brain I'm gonna go gym today and bang out 200kg dead lift tomorrow news will be on here by some poor bloke you fucking tossers i can't walk |

I'm generally referring to experienced lifters with good techniques built over a long period of time. If someone thinks its all in the mind and tries something they're not capable of then the only tosser in the gym is them lol. Lift within your limits, learn good good form and technique and the weight will gradually increase. Lifting with poor form will inevitably lead to injuries and maximum potential will never be reached. |
