I have and didn't think much of it (this isn't counting any I may have unknowingly eaten). I've dramatically reduced the amount of meat I eat this year so I wouldn't bother with horsemeat, just eat less but better quality of the traditional meats.

I knew someone would come up with that argument I live in a farming community but breeding cattle and sheep for meat is totally different to breeding horses. It's just not something I'd consider yet I'll happily eat beef and lamb and pork. I wont eat rabbit either for some reason but I will eat duck now and again if the mood takes me.

I just think people get too sentimental about certain meats.

The only meat I wouldn't eat is dog. Partly because I love dogs and partly because I know it tastes awful! I have eaten wolf meat though and that was quite nice.

I've had horse when in Europe and it tastes nice and is far better than other red meats such as beef

I think the sentiment behind eating horse meat was so that the horses have a sales value at the end of their natural life which in turn may prevent the amount of neglected and abandoned horses. I'm fairly certain they didn't want all horse owners starting to go carnivorous in their stables so less of the outrage please!!

Personally I think why not. It's a bit like us being an organ donor when we're dead rather than just rotting. The horse is just donating its meat rather than its organs!!

I don't eat meat but aside of that if I did I wouldn't want to eat animal that is domesticated like horse, rabbit & dog!!

Princess Ann though recently made a compelling argument for eating horse meat where she said it would give horses 'monetary worth' which would encourage certain communities to treat their livestock better.

for the record, i'm not outraged. each to their own and all that. and i do understand where they are coming from. the news is full of horses being dumped/neglected because their owners can't afford to keep them any more. overbreeding is a big part of the problem as well. it's just not something i would wish to eat

"I've had horse when in Europe and it tastes nice and is far better than other red meats such as beef

I think the sentiment behind eating horse meat was so that the horses have a sales value at the end of their natural life which in turn may prevent the amount of neglected and abandoned horses. I'm fairly certain they didn't want all horse owners starting to go carnivorous in their stables so less of the outrage please!!

Horses are traceable through there passport system so you no if they are fit for human consumption,I doubt you could say the same for dogs!

passports have a page which you sign to state whether or not the horse is intended for human consumption. in countries like France and Belguim they are bred specifically for meat. much like cows are bred here. when the 'horse meat scandal' was going on here there were traces of bute found which is not to be fed to horses intended for human consumption

horses were on roads long before cars and motorcycles. If I'm on a road I know is used by horses I drive slow. If I see a rider I slow down until we have passed. Common sense and courtesy the same I apply to pushbike and motorcycles

I think you need to read what I said. You have your facts wrong meat accredited for sale is not poisonous as trading standards would confirm. Illegal meat of any sort is meat not destined for human consumption no matter what beast it is. I assume you are trying to scaremonger people due to the fact you don't like people eating horse. The facts are over a million people in Europe eat horse flesh every year safely.

Ron or should I say BIG BAD cant keep up with people other names. Bute is sometimes used as a drug to treat individuals suffering from a severe form of arthritis, but in rare cases it causes a serious blood disorder known as aplastic anaemia, where the body does not make enough new blood cells.

FSA chief executive Catherine Brown accused some vets and horse owners of not ensuring horse passports are kept up-to-date, leading to bute-treated horses ending up in the food chain. I have been reading for months about it getting in the food chain and not fit for the public .

Phenylbutazone, often called Bute. The painkiller for horses is not allowed in the human food supply because of concerns that it could cause aplastic anemia. Drug residues are a serious concern across the meat supply, but are of particular concern for animals like horses, that are not specifically raised for food and may be treated with a long list of drugs throughout their lives. The concern is that some of those drugs remain in the meat if that horse makes it into the food supply, and whether eating those residues is safe for people.

You really don't understand do you about what goes into the food chain for humans. The facts are that every medication, wash, spray an animal has used on it going into the food chain has to be documented. Every animal can be traced back from end user to source and the products are tested for contamination.

You do realise that cows are kept in Europe for meat, as horses and they use the same medication and go through the same stringent tests.

Which brings no credence to your poison claim I have an uncle who runs a BMW franchise but I don't know what parts go into making them So what your family have do run or breed really doesn't make you knowledgeable on the subject and to claim it is rather immature to think it does. I suggest you get some independent facts and do your homework as your claims so far are incredulous at best but hey if believing them makes you happy go for it but it doesn't make it true or dissuade others from smiling at the naivety.

"We have fly spy has nasty stuff in it . People have to have mask and gloves just to put that on again its on the list . Wormers are made up of poisons .Government cant cheek everything going into the food chain like with cows and other things .. its far to big and this is why the risks are there.

You really don't understand do you about what goes into the food chain for humans. The facts are that every medication, wash, spray an animal has used on it going into the food chain has to be documented. Every animal can be traced back from end user to source and the products are tested for contamination.

You do realise that cows are kept in Europe for meat, as horses and they use the same medication and go through the same stringent tests. lol I have family who are farmers rearing cows and live stock 1000s a year and butchers in my family too shall we ask them, and I don't eat it ..

"

lol I hate this ping bong game I have my views you have your like on my other posts we don't see eye to eye.. Unlike cattle and pigs, horses are not raised for food under food safety guidelines. This means that horses can be given any sort of medication and be sent to slaughter. There is no fool-proof way to monitor what the horse has ingested and how much.

We all have our own view here on forums I have my own others have there that's what makes a forum .... I am into horses and their welfare and read a lot about them I know the score and I know some are happy to eat . 2 weeks time of to a very big meeting and we will be chatting about this and different laws and loads of stuff to do with the welfare of the horse. Last time I was there saying loads of horses still don't have a passport and law saying each one should have it well 1000s don't . And some if needing them get fake ones .

I lived in Germany for a while and have eaten horse regularly. It is a very lean meat so is better to eat than pork for instance. Seeing as a very recent news report said many horses are being abandoned and re-homing charities are struggling to find owners why not sell them for meat!

I love horses and, yet, I'm a little overawed by them. Since ancient times, they've been a creature aside from all others in their sacred mythology and demiethereal power in our combined British and Norse cultures - which is perhaps why, even to this day, we are so reluctant to kill them for food.

On the other hand, I do like a nice lasagna.

Do you accept that people chose to eat them, and that it's just not for you, or would you try and change their attitudes towards doing it?

Never is a long long time!

Imagine a post apocalyptic scenario, you are surrounded by a pack of now feral dogs, you and they are driven mad by hunger. Do you kill and share your horse with the dogs cementing their loyalty to you and surviving. Or do you refuse to kill your pet horse and join your horse in death becoming dog food when they attack?

"I wouldn't [knowingly] eat horse. I live in a part of the world where there are many pedigree Welsh Cobs, this area is quite famous for them. I adore them so can't bear the thought of eating them.

i love my horse and it would be like eating a pet/family member

Yeah I understand that!!I wouldn't want to eat a family member!!But would eat one of my fish!

what kinda fish?

Carp but I bet they are not all that to eat

I eat carp (it's a Polish thing), most people run a mile from it because they're bottom feeders but the taste is lovely. Very mild and not 'fishy' at all.

I have eaten Carp, Catfish, Bream and Pike, all taste different but very nice..

Back to the OP yes ive eaten Horsemeat in Belgium and it was as good as any other Meat

Gimp"

There are as you stated a number of freshwater species of fish you can eat I once had eel but I had a bad experience with them so from that I won,t touch them again unless out of the sea where they taste all together different, perch is another fresh water fish you can eat also pike perch (zander) If you have good tackle to

catch them their a pest here now being

a released predator,a bit of salmon and trouts nice but i love salt water fish if available plaice, mackeral, cod and chips comes to mind.. but never horsemeat very popular in the first and second world wars when no other meat was available and rations were low.

NO!

Dogs are carnivores and it is a very bad idea to eat carnivore meat. If you remember New Variant CJD was caused by the adding of sheep bonemeal to the feed of cattle thus turning a herbivore into a carnivore. However having said that if it was a choice between starving or eating dog I would eat dog!

By the way horses are herbivores and herd prey animals just like cattle and sheep.

What is your point?

I point out to you the total stupidity of your 'I would never eat my pets' statement. So you reply with we should add the 10,000's of dogs put to sleep into the human food chain. I again reply with a sensible reason why this would not be a good idea, but finish by saying that I would eat dog rather than starve.

to this you reply that they eat dog in other parts of the world but fail to mention that those places would be Asia and sub Saharan Africa, both well known for their continual famines, thus proving my original point that when faced with starvation we will eat anything.

Finally you mention the fish we throw back because its the wrong type. Or we have taken our quota. Again you show your total lack of understanding of what is happening. Firstly we throw them back because we are not starving and actually have a surfeit of food in Europe and the developed world. Secondly what is thrown back, contrary to popular belief is not wasted, but returns to the food chain. Fact is, nearly all fish eat fish or fish eggs and noting goes to waste in the seas.
