It made me giggle, but only a little because it was a good but not a great gag.
I don't think things should necessarily be out of bounds with humour for fear of causing offence (we all choose what we're offended by) and nor am I going to look around and check if everyone else is offended before laughing, sorry. |

There is a delightful irony in this reply and the fact that you appear to have taken offence by the it. Should he have started the post with a disclaimer saying "sorry if this offends"? |

You will bound to offend some people normally people who don't know any people with disabilities
But I find the people with disabilities have a far more wittier sense of humour and can be more offensive with there jokes
See "the last leg "it's so funny

I'd avoid racist/disabled jokes on this thread, as it'll get shut down pretty fast. |

I do think when a subject that is a personal subject to individuals for whatever reason gets turned into a joke people can become offended by that joke...I think when someone goes through bad and dark times and it gets turned into a joke can be seen as bad taste.... |

Clearly having a family member that is mentally ill isn't funny. But to be offended because somebody you don't even no makes a joke about a fictional situation,is being offended for the sake of it IMO. |

I also have a relative who is has mental illness issues but I did laugh.
That's a bit like when Isaac Hayes was on Southpark but quit when they had a story-line about Scientology. So everyone else who was offended by everything he said on the programme it was OK but it crossed the line when it affected him personally.
Seems a very strange way of seeing things to me. |

it took me a few seconds to realise it was a joke. Made me giggle. I wouldn't worry about people getting stressed at you. You can't please everyone. I can't go into it but mental health is something I know about. And it didn't offend me. Half of all jokes out there take the piss out of people, that's what I find funny.

Think this is a clear case of knowing your audience and playing to them. Personally I thought it was amusing but with an audience as far reaching as on here you are bound to find people that find it offensive.
Perhaps the OP did know the audience and has played them like a fiddle or perhaps not.

You apologised for the joke's offensive potential before you even told it. And now you are apologising for giving offence and yet stating that you will not apologise for that which gives offence. A positively schizophrenic approach! |

So, can someone correct me here, but surely no mention of any mental illness was made.
It was only alluded to so the word nut could be used in the play on word at the end.
If he had mocked any specific issues or individual's struggles then maybe, just maybe, the bad taste card can be shown.
As it is, the op gets a verbal warning..... judge your audience young man, judge your audience.
I haven't read the thread so apologies if there is any repetition.....no apologies for my opinion.
Runs off to shelter bwhind something very large. |

Nothing should be off limits in humour, it's a very thin line and what context the joke is told in, I don't believe in censorship and I Believe in freedom of speech. Some people may be offended by some humour I would rather that than to be censored and to be told what is funny and what isn't. Humour has a great way of dealing with difficult situations and black humour is a way for some people to deal and process difficult and emotive subjects |

Alf Garnet and Jim Davidson aren't comparable in this case.
Alf Garnet exposed ignorance and bigotry through characterisation.
Jim Davidson WAS an ignorant and bigotted character. |

Ok, I tried to read all the posts but didnt get past half way, so Im sorry if I am a bit repetitive. I like others actually suffer with some mental health issues, and I can say that I did giggle at the joke. I happen to think it is a personal thing. I also have a daughter with additional needs ( not handicapped or disabled lol) and I have to say I would probably find jokes offensive, so I can see both sides. But rather ironically if somebody eats Brazil nuts they can instigate a reaction in somebody with a nut allergy when having sex lol !!! |

Acknowledging a term slangly used for psychosocial issues is "nuts" Is the alleged crime here feigning offence at this is a poor reflection of and objective view, I think |
