Is this something that gets on anyone else's nerves?

I've even starting deleting messages from people who can't string a few words together.

I am more interested in the content of the message than the delivery method. A beautifully spelled one liner without a face pic will get deleted because its not what I am after, whereas a badly spelled but interesting message with face pic will get a reply, even if its a no thanks.

Text speak however should be banned by the Geneva Convention.

Yes, completely. I won't speak to people if they can't manage proper English or string a well constructed sentence together. I'm sapiosexual in many ways, and this is a very good indicator

I am guilty of spelling mistakes big time, as there is no spell checker on the phone and I suffer from fat finger syndrome lol. Plus I always forget to prof read what I type in.

I can't write in txt spk even if I try on my phone. In fact it's really bloody hard to do a spelling mistake on it, even if I want to!

It likes to throw in a few grocer's apostrophes to keep me alert though.

Personally, if I need a Rosette Stone to decipher a message I wouldn't bother. If the profile is full of text speak, I move onto the next one.

It's one of my filters, I just move along.

You can usually spot the difference between dyslexia & laziness/stupidity. I'm not too bothered though so long as I can translate it.

I tend to think people that use text speak are going to the effort of using it to aim at a target market that isn't me though.

Always a risky thread to start: there's a difference between poor spelling and poor typing.

And also, I'd rather be a poor speller than a spelling nazi.

Text speak isn't my cup of tea - but neither does it truly offend me to receive it.

Also, Cougar, if you're a pedant for spelling be a pedant for punctuation; your profile is a grammatical train wreck.

My point being - unless you're without sin be careful where you throw stones.

It's a dumbing down of vocabulary and grammar; the next phase is communication through grunting.

I'll be the first to admit that I can be a bitof a grammar nazi at time. But at the same time I know that I am also guilty of spelling mistakes or garbling words because I type too fast. As such I accept similar mistakes in others as well, also dyslexia etc.

However, as others have said, if the message doesn't have a single word spelt right in it - I mean, how do you misspell "I"? I don't know, but the number of people who do is staggering.

Basically as most people should be able to read faster that they can type, if it takes longer to understand what someone wrote than it would to write the message and spell check it then I don't see the point in starting a conversation with that person.

Text speak is a big no no for me, especially on an older person who wasn't brought up with text speak....makes them sound idiotic or trying to "get with it "

If you are going to criticise other people please make sure your own post in grammatically correct first

As for me it doesn't really matter as I speak to the person on a meet not give him a pen and paper and ask him to jot a few lines down, literal snobbery wont get you very far if it means you are missing out on some lovely people

I have dyslexia but in other things in life I can run rings around people I am no less a person because I have this .. its made me do well in life to show people and I have done well. And when I see a person wright who has it I can read easy so its fine I really do not care . if off a phone and just lazy now that's very different .

No one is calling people with dyslexia thick . Some of the countries most intelligent people are dyslexic . I think it was started about personal preference of text speak and gangster speak . I personally don't care as long ad they clean , fit and a good fuck .T.Q xxx

i think that spelling mistakes and text speak are two different things.....

we all are prone to the odd spelling mistake... and I am not always the best speller myself, but on firefox for example there is a spell checker, and if it is underlined in red as I am typing, I can go back and have a look.....

text speak is completely different... if it takes me 3 or 4 times reading something to decipher what is being said, to be honest the mood has probably gone by then.......

Text speak is a definite no-no for us. Also, we're okay with the odd spelling mistake in a message, it's easily done, but if the message is full of them then we'll just reply with a '...no thanks. message. If someone doesn't put a small amount of effort into sending a coherent message then we're not going to put the effort into meeting them.

Yes your right nobody is calling anyone for having dyslexia so my apologies for taking these types of threads in a personal way. The problem comes from a lack of understanding an the fact that most peaple of my age went threw school an the like with teacher's who had no understand of dyslexia in fact in my case it hadn't even been heard of so we spent years being told how thick we where and that why it ends up becoming so personal an peaple like myself jump all over these type of threads...

A few peaple have menshend using spell checkers an yes for some that helps but the problem with them is you need to have some idea of the correct spelling to start with if you don't or simply can't see it the more you look an try to get it right the more the word becomes a jumbled mess...

Nearly all of us make spelling mistakes from time to time and I know that predictive text can be a nightmare for some of us. I suppose the same applies to grammar and punctuation, so we tend to ignore a mistake or two in messages.

Text speak, or is it txt spk? is another matter. It says to us that the writer is either uneducated, lazy, both, or even worse shows a complete lack of respect.

An odd word we would overlook, but we would never respond to, let alone meet, anyone who sent us a message written that way.

so that people who use the "text speak" do get a better understanding that for some people its an instant turn off.... and it can affect people's chances...

me personally... the spelling thing isn't so much the issue.... the text speak is.... and I have moved on from more than one profile and many conversations with potential playing partners because of it........

Well I for one am over the moon that I am able to converse with so many people! Txt speak, slang( from different cultures!) mixtures of all, plus my own regional dialect! Love people and am a very sociable person who actually enjoys the diversity... I can, and have, in life , met and spoken to many , from every walk of life. From the man on the street to big posh dinners with the top dogs. And I can talk and laugh with all. So no! It don't bover me at all!

spelling and grammar mistakes i cope with well enough. and cases where it seems someone's autocorrect demon has struck at random. I'm just as guilty of them.

text speak, though, i do not attempt to decode. i don't speak in real life as if i were texting. i do not use text speak in online media or when speaking via text or social phone app. so i won't do it via email message, no matter how hot the guy may be.

I'm very much of the same mind. It's perhaps a linguistic skill in itself to understand communication in many forms, and understand it immediately, despite coming from very different worlds and having to sometimes span generations/continents.

I enjoy seeing a broad range of types of expression personally.

I may be very intellectually snobbish and a little (OK very) anal but text speak in mails and forum posts are real turn offs. After all the whole point of text speak is to save characters in texts where there is a cost attached. This does not apply in emails, or messages on fab so only shows laziness on the part of those using such shorthand unnecessary.

As for spelling mistakes, I also notice these and do not see dyslexia as an excuse. Again most misspelled words are a sign of laziness. My spelling is not great but I can see words that are underlined in red and it only takes a second to right click on the word and pick what I believe to be the correct spelling from the drop-down box.

Now I am sure that there are those out there that the following does not apply to. But in my experience people who are so lazy or disinterested in how they appear to others that they fail to use real English or correct spelling when it is made so easy for them are not going to make attentive lovers.

However, as others have said, if the message doesn't have a single word spelt right in it - I mean, how do you misspell "I"? I don't know, but the number of people who do is staggering.

Haha this made me laugh. I always misspell "I" and put a "u" in its place because its right next to the "I". Always notice it after I hit send

Im no grammar nazi but spelling and grammar irk me sometimes if its too much of it. I do recognize the difference between typos and truly bad spelling and its forgivable. Fast typers and swypers

Thats why im not really a nazi about it. I know the difference between it's and its but in the world of one finger typing I dont make the effort for punctuation sometimes and that doesn't bother me so much from others either. Misspelling of simple and common words or grammatical errors that truly make a statement difficult to understand do irk me but not enough to write someone off for it or spend time correcting them.

If someone finds it hard to put themselves in my shoes - ok, they may be high heels - when theyre writing, then it probably wont bode well for their general sensitivities to my needs. If understanding some drivel text is too hard, I dont bother. With predictive text on phones now, the need for abbreviations etc is reduced. If they have not adapted, Id guess they are inflexible. With burgeoning inboxes, it should encourage senders to make their messages clear and intelligible.
