"I think 7 is probably too old but it's down to individual parents to decide. " I think probably is an understatement ? I also find it odd we think it's always "up to the individual" I'm sorry to say but a proportion of individuals are incompetent , dangerous , misguided, indoctrinated , deluded, miss informed , public liabilities In my opinion it is child abuse x

"I breast fed my first child until I wanted to conceive again so about 13/ 14 months and people felt able to make unfavourable comments about that but I ignored them. However by that time they usually only want a feed for comfort last thing at night, so I imagine this 7 year old will only be having a comfort feed now and again. " That's exactly it. Comfort. I don't think the child would develop psychological issues because they are breast fed longer, as a previous poster has implied. However I feel they should be taught other coping mechanisms, instead of resorting to the easiest option.
"places like Africa they breastfeed till the child decides to stop" Yep!
"places like Africa they breastfeed till the child decides to stop" I don't think you can compare the UK to Africa when it comes to a food source. In the UK the preferred age to wean is 6 months... It used to be 4. We have all sorts of nutritious foods available to feed our young. Africa is a developing country, so there's no doubt in my mind those children would benefit nutritionally from extended feeding.

" Or maybe it's the mother having an attachment issue and enjoying a comfort feed And of course just because there are worse abuses this should be condoned . 7 in 4 years time could be a parent themselves ! It's always going to be a psychological risk factor that should not be entertained

It's very easy to calm a breast fed baby, and help them get to sleep on the breast. It's partly because of the skin to skin contact they get and the comfort they get. I'd imagine the older they get the harder it is to cut that off. It took me 6 weeks of hell to switch my baby onto a bottle after 13 weeks feeding her myself.. I dread to think how hard that must be later.

I would suggest allowing a 7 year old child to breast feed is an indicator the mother has issues that should be addressed ? Give people choice without guidance and parameters and bad choices are made x if that choice affects only them that's good if it affects someone else questions need to be asked This senate is a logical and statistical simplicity Risk reward Are there any benefits for the child in its future answer non Is there a statistical increase in future problems , absolutely Even if the potential was one in 100000 for this continuing causing future psychological concerns the fact there is zero benifit means the risk is non justified

"Birth to 12 months baby milk or breast milk Inbetween this weaning after 3 months, mine were younger on weetabix to start. 12 months full fat cows milk or a follow up milk. Baby cups introduced, finger foods, solids foods, at a babies need and timing, and by 18 months the baby bottles should be given to father Christmas. All this its caring and bonding is lazy to me, can lead to bullying. Peel some spuds and vegetables for kids. They do say the first few weeks is the only goodness from breast milk anyway, or a few months depending. Let a child grow up the right way. Rant over Her " I think you will find that the most up to date research shows that 6 months is optimum to breast feed exclusively. It benefits the child by giving them all of your immunities, plus lowering their chances of developing things like asthma, obesity, IBS, diabetes and even certain cancers, plus a whole host of other benefits, including for the mum such as lowering her chance of breast cancer. This would suggest to me that this would be allowing the "child to grow up the right way"..
"Attachment she needs to feel needed .its a control thing a gift only she can give .sounds exceptionally selfish to me Just because she wants to does not mean she should do " If that is the case I agree, but I don't know her. I feel that women get the short straw where parenting is concerned, breast feed too long you have attachment issues, not long enough you don't care enough for your child's health and so on.

" Not at all! but I feel that by the age of 7, it would be beneficial to the child to have taught them alternative ways to find comfort, rather than using the breast. Plus in this case the mum was very very tired and even said herself that it was taking its toll and some nights she was sleeping on the child's bedroom floor.. I don't see that as being ultimately beneficial, when there are other ways to comfort.

"This no way a sexual thing. I seen a programme on sky, where mothers were breast feeding there of all ages. There was one woman who was adopting a 16mth old toddler from china and was trying to get the child back on her breast. Just thought I would get other peoples thoughts on this. You make a good point when you say it's in no way sexual I think some people get confused on that issue and it could be part of their objection (I exclude commentators on this thread from that remark).

"Quote from World Health Organisation: If every child was breastfed within an hour of birth, given only breast milk for their first six months of life, and continued breastfeeding up to the age of two years, about 800 000 child lives would be saved every year. Just sayin is all " Exactly what we would have said!!
