"Is it really even possible to say, write, or create anything original anymore? Haven't most thoughts already been thought by someone before? Isn't that how the phrase "great minds think alike" originated, to make us feel better about not being original when we thought we were?
Originality, in my opinion, is actually in the eye of the beholder. Regardless of whether you believe in abundance or limited supply, the number of possible combinations of common things is almost infinite. Add to that an unimaginable range of styles, perspectives, tones, etc and you should be able to create an endless number of possibilities.
Here's how and why I believe there will always be an abundant amount of opportunities to be creative, unique, and original in your work:
Only you have had your unique set of life experiences. Share them.
Take an idea; add your two cents; pass it on for someone else to add to it; repeat often; by the end it will grow into something that could never have existed by itself. Use synergy.
Our environments and situations are constantly changing, so there will always be new combinations of issues and problems that need addressing in new ways. Be open to change.
What's new to me is different from what is new to you. Put yourself out there and your audience will find you.
Not everyone likes or is inspired by the same thing. Bring your passion to an audience that appreciates it; let someone else reach their audience in their unique way.
We all travel in different circles, families, tribes, groups, etc. Bring ideas from one group to another. Cross-pollinate to create new combinations.
Be open-minded, not closed or judgmental, about new thoughts, ideas, and combinations.
Being exposed to the same thing in different ways will trigger different responses in different people and places at different times. Appreciate that.
The same people with the same assignment will yield different results every time. Utilize that.
Different people will surely have different perspectives on the same thing. New ideas will arise when you: compare and contrast; negotiate and compromise; discuss and debate, etc. Be creative, listen, and experience a wide variety of influences.
Innovation isn't dead nor dying. Originality and creativity is alive and thriving if you choose to look at it that way. Think in abundance. Permutations, combinations and variations are your friend. Experiment and be open-minded to experiencing and communicating things in new ways. Put your thoughts out there and, like a boomerang, be open to what comes back.
Or, to put it another way - take a hint.

Although I thought it was a bit harsh on the OP who was just putting up a topic for discussion - and we are all free to join in or stay away - I do see where you are coming from. I happen to be very creative and I am always full of new ideas but I did wonder just how many more times you can discuss your dinner menu, wet pussies and erectile dysfunction to name but some of the popular ones.
I guess what you are saying is.. dont try too hard - just let things come into your mind and when they do - then post? Originality before the desperate desire to post?
I am not criticising anybody just checking out whether I undersyood you correctly. |
