https://uk.news.yahoo.com/agoraphobic-travelled-world-benefits-181420138.html#JPIxVJG
i have just been reading the story of the woman who travelled the world while recieving benefits for her " agoraphobia " she also wrote steamy romance novals travelling guides cook books and owned her own tour guide company as well as eating expencive meals in a himalain spa and boasting about it on facebook the ammount totaled to 48 thousand pounds so clearly the governments measures to stop benefit fraud isnt working and the ones who suffer are the innocent people making making genuine cliaims i personally would lock her up for ten years and if i couldnt do that i would make her pay aty least double the money she stole does everyone else think the benefit system is too open to people who might defraud it for their own personal gain ? once again i state i am not having a go at anyone on benefits who needs to be there as long as they have genuine reasons for being on there i just dont think people defrauding the system are being made a proper example of and sometimes i wonder if im the only one who sees it this way ? |

Yep if your on benefits you shouldn't be allowed to swing
Oh dear 95% would be gone lol
Actually I hate how society dehumanises the poor and on benefit just because some defraud the system yet when an employee defrauds an employer we don't say tighten up the employment laws, fact is there are crooks in all walks of life from the richest bankers to the very poor, we shouldn't be ever thinking about removing the cushion the benefit system gives to those who have fallen on hard times, those with disability, those long term sick or injured, we should be a civilised society x |

"Here goes another thread vilifying those on benefits when the real crooks are the bankers and the thieving politicians "
While I agree with what you are saying about bankers and politicians but the welfare system is the best in the world for supporting those in need but those who cheat the system are draining the funds which could be put to work helping those genuine cases. I have never met anyone who would deny helping those in real need |

I've known quite a few who have been denied in their time in need, sadly.
The draining of funds by the 'benefit cheats' is (as I mentioned above) a pail of water in the welfare ocean - and whilst every little helps the overall picture is something that the Government doesn't want the masses to see with any clarity.
Because the truth is that our 'best in class' welfare system is bankrupt, and all the agoraphobic travel writers in the world are not to blame for it. |

... and not forgetting the corrupt newspaper owners with whom they're in cahoots - and who publish these stories every so often to keep the gullible masses divided and, thereby, easier to control.

It costs approximately £35,000 a year to keep a prisoner in the UK, amd while she has done wrong and deserves punishment as such I think it's ridiculous to jail them, at further cost while politicians and fat cat bankers walk free everyday.
This case is pure greed. However we are fed this propoganda constantly to keep the hard working people believe all benefit claimants are cheats and layabouts. That our government is doing right by punishing these people. Unfortunately the majority of them are in that position from a government who have screwed them over in the first place!! |

Now this puzzles me .
Obviously the op has highlighted an obvious case of fraud and the recipient should be made to pay every single penny back .
However , this who blame the government , media and bankers are misguided .
The government can only pay out what's there to give . If this were put into effect from now , it would amount to fuck all . So things get shuffled , savings are made elsewhere , and we continue to have the best welfare state in the world .
Most high earners pay shedloads of tax which adds to the kitty for those in need . So why have a go at them ? Without them there would be even less to give !
The media highlights extreme examples because it's interesting . The life of a law abiding person on benefits would have no value whatsoever in terms of _iewing or reading numbers .
Just as everything , we are entertained by extremity and not mundanity .
Rightly or wrongly there will always be arseholes in this world of ours . Some we hear about , others we don't , but to turn this thread round and blame the government , bankers and the media is bollocks .

Benefits cheats make me want to vomit. I was unemployed for 8 months after 6 months I got nothing . In the previous 10 years I'd paid about £150 k in tax. Whilst I was getting a grilling at the job shop scumbags would come in take the piss, boast to their mates about flogging knock off gear etc etc. No intention of working and every intention of screwing every penny they could get in benefits.
They have a level of expectation that is huge and an intention to work which is zero.
Oh and if it costs a lot to keep them in prison simple solution "theres a tent, theres some barbed wire. Build the prison your going to be staying in. And your cost of care whilst in prison is a debt. You'll be billed" |

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum |
The fact that this has made the news shows how rare this sort of thing is. If all benefits claimants were travelling the world I suspect the Daily Mail would spontaneously combust in a blaze of indignation so it must only be a minority that do it.
So why is it the majority of claimants who get insulted and blamed? |

I don't see the majority of claimants getting insulted and blamed, I see the cheats and the fraudsters being vilified in this thread, and quite rightly too. Many legitimate claimants seem to take instant offence when cheats are mentioned in these threads, then other instances are cited, such as dodgy bankers, dishonest MPs etc. Apart from the legitimate benefits claimants, they're all crooks. |

Very true. No one was having a go about people on benefits, its the people "stealing" them that need sorting. It's not a rare thing, the papers only print the ones that have defrauded loads of money. There's lots of cheats out there. They should be shopped !!! |

"Here goes another thread vilifying those on benefits when the real crooks are the bankers and the thieving politicians
thank you for saying what I was thinking"
The rich get richer, the poor get poorer,
They are getting the poor from the posh areas in London to leave,
Making the divide even bigger, because the rich people can now live in some parts of London , and not have to live next door to someone on benefits.
It's not the politicians that run this country , they like to think to they do .
It's the bankers, and those that have money to put back in the economy like businesses and people who pay severe amounts of tax in savings
Without I industry and business and the banks we would all be living in mud huts, farming our little garden and looking after pigs .
Money does not make you happy |

I nrver said she shouldn't be punished and I'm certainly not taking a lenient _iew, however I don't think jail should be the punishment for this answer. She should be made to work damn hard, paying tax at a much higher rate, and stripped of all luxuries.
She conned tens of thousands off the tax payer, and her punishment costs the tax payer more!
What bugs me about the usual benefit bashing threads is the usual crap about how our taxes pay for benefits. Actually the average wage earner pays approx 36p per month tax towards DWP
I could understand peoples anger if tax went directly to benefits but our tax pays towards schools, emergency services etc etc, a hell of a lot more than benefits.
I just knew this thread would end up as a benefit bashing, rather than ask the questions like how was this not found sooner etc. They always do |

It does make me laugh because the government keep saying the benefit pot is nearly empty and yet can "suddenly" find money for all sorts of things .....maybe that maria woman can put the £50.000 back into the pot for a start....ohhhhhh wait...she only has to pay £5.000,. |

In the case cited in the op , no .
Overall of course it is , but it also relies on honesty and integrity from us too .
What pisses me off is the way forumites immediately turn on the government and blame them for everything .
If more people took on more personal responsibility the country would be a better place . Considering where the country was when the Tories took over , I think they are doing a great job |

I agree - apart from the silly bit about Tories.
Amazes me the level of defensiveness about people abusing systems that are supposed to help those in genuine need. |

Sadly a lot of people are far from honest and think its all about them the cost of chancing fraudsters is epic if those that do steal didn't there would be a lot more to go to the people who need it. |

Benefit fraud is a teeny weeny amount, and all of our pensions and state benefits bills could be paid multiple times over by the amount of money that is lost due to tax avoidance of our scum rich. Divide and conquer is a great game that our government and right wing media have been playing for a number of years. Get angry at the real parasites - millionaire tax avoiders who use all of our infrastructure but pay nothing towards it. |

Type "The big ESA swindle" into Google & find out how disabled people have been conned by the govenment.
The Disability Rights site explains how the government has defrauded 1000's of people out of their benefits...what excuse do the government have, bad childhood, rough area, bad education.
There is massive fraud happening both side of the fences but some don't have the media other have.

The thread isn't about rich scum as you put it its about thieving scum of the earth who steal money that is destined for people who really need it. I always find it interesting people who try and play down one criminal element citing another who.......well its not strictly illegal to ensure you pay as little tax as possible though its not moral paying 100k a year rather than the 500k others think they should pay. |

There is only a few people who I know who are benfits that have openly admitted to.playing the system, one brags that she is getting in putting claims in for more money. People like that annoy me, as they are taking money that really should be going to someone else more needy. |

The media are reporting huge rise in food bank handouts , it's not that more people are starving they mishandle their benefits on cigs , booze ,drugs and leave their kids starving. Sick of seeing it when I do gas safety's in rentals, takeaways in the fully fitted kitchen that the hob and oven never used, they sit on fat backsides watching flat screen tv and xbox, whilst upstairs a mattress is the only bedroom piece of kit for their poor kids to sleep on
Depresses me the scum , even reported to social services
These would rip any benefit they could get their thieving lazy hands on
Bring back food vouchers and at least a real made meal is on the table
Can't spend food vouchers on booze , fags
What the hell have we bred |

Type "The big ESA swindle" into Google & find out how disabled people have been conned by the govenment.
The Disability Rights site explains how the government has defrauded 1000's of people out of their benefits...what excuse do the government have, bad childhood, rough area, bad education.
There is massive fraud happening both side of the fences but some don't have the media other have.
There are some very misguided quotes on this post, but this has to be the best/worst. Government welfare reform is needed to
sustain the welfare state. Years ago people could get away with signing sick and NEVER working in their lives because they couldnt do a particular job, now tgey are assessed to establish what they can do rather than what they cant. ESA is not perfect but its a lot better to give someone hope rather than leaving them on the scrap heap with no hope. There are a host of reports/statistics out there
showing thats its beneficial heakth wise for people to work. There will always be people who dont want work or want to work and claim, the money should be given to those in need. |

"One drop in just a pail full from the ocean; making tabloid headlines to re-enforce a moral and social _iewpoint designed to distract us from the real issues.
"Go back to bed. Your government has figured it all out. Go back to bed, Britain. Your government is in control again.
Here. Watch this, read that, shut up. Go back to bed. Here's some random people you can target with your hate. Here's the public entertaining themselves. Here is 56 channels of it! Watch Joe Public bang their fucking skulls together and congratulate you on living in the land of freedom.
You are free to do as we tell you! You are free to do what we tell you!"

Great so what are you going to do about it?
At least the people you're judging can plead ignorance for their inaction what's your excuse for your apathy? |

"I nrver said she shouldn't be punished and I'm certainly not taking a lenient _iew, however I don't think jail should be the punishment for this answer.
They always do "
I'd love to see how you came to that 36p figure. |

The fact there are over 1000 people misinformed on that site by welfare divisions not knowing what the other is doing has to be the biggest fuck up the welfare state has ever done.
We have friends who have had money stopped even though they are severely disabled by some prat not trained in their jobs with no medical expertise, ESA is a fuck up which has also caused ATOS to lose it tender so how is this good???

Yeah that's totally sensible! |
