I thought it was dull as dishwater.

Gave it 3 episodes to try and warm up and nah, wasn't for me.

I got the impression it was made with more of a female audience in mind.

I really liked it but it started to get a bit dull after the 3rd series (I think, it's been a while).

I would say it is worth a watch, it has flashes of brilliance in it and is a quite amusing take on that period.

If you haven't seen Deadwood, I would recommend that also (but it is short because they stopped making it for Rome).

I read someone describe Mad Men as the closest that television has come to poetry.

Not at all. A huge theme is masculinity and how perception of men's roles began to change in the 60s.

It's fascinating, great characters - definitely recommend it.
