R is driving north today and needs to go up the M1. There is a terribly long 50mph section that seems to run from Nottingham to Sheffield

Can it be avoided on a journey to Wakefield?

Does anyone have any advice?

thanks!

I could send him up towards the A46 and over the the A1 that way.

Wondered if there was a short cut somewhere near Sheffield

he is working so no fun - well till work finishes

unfortunatley if he cuts over A57 to sheffield from worksop he will be in road works around sheffield

think A638 from doncaster is better unless he travels over night

Come off the A1 at the M18 and cut across to the M1.

Though it's not really shorter, just a road that has a higher average speed (except at rush hour). It joins the M1 at jct32 just south of Sheffield. He'd still have to go past Sheffield and over the Tinsley viaduct where the M1 goes down to two lanes.

Central

I move through the m1 junction 28 north roadworks fairly well. But not used it today. Id monitor live traffic speeds on TomToms web site, and plan in real time. Id potentially move off the m1 onto the m18, across to the a1, if the m1 through and past sheffield is really slow. You can do cross country from junction 28 A38, near Mansfield north too, should traffic be really bad on the M1, but it is largely single carriageway roads -Ive done it a few times, when at a standstill on motorway.

In the middle

I went up and down it over the weekend and it was fine, traffic rolled along nicely and no stops, however I have been up before when it was busy and crawled along for miles, hope you will be lucky enough to travel outside of the bank holiday rush
