Does Suarez deserve a winner's medal?
Jump to: Newest in thread
If Liverpool go on and win the league does Saurez deserve a winner's medai. As good a player as he is and as much of a contrbution he had made, should cheats prevail? I'm struggling to think of a bigger cheat to have disgraced the Premier League. |

He's made a decisive contribution and generally kept his nose clean. He's already been punished by the FA for his previous stupidity. Hopefully he continues improving his on field etiquette as when he's on fire...Liverpool are ruthless.
On the subject of cheats...Stevie G has dived plenty too... Alas it's the nature of the game, though I wish it wasn't.
Norwich have just scored their second!! |

He seems a pretty unpleasant person but an incredible footballer, one of the best in fact.
However plenty of players have gone before him who I would class the same (Ronaldo and I'm Man U)
So yes, they should get their medals. If players cheat it's the referee who should spot and penalise at the moment it happens, not look at how unsporting they may have been at the end of the season. |

I am sure ivanovic would have preferred the theatrical bite on the arm to a late over the top leg breaking challenge any day of the week. Suarez deserves player of the year and the premiership title. A truly great player.
Let's leave Ashley young out of this because he's English and we don't do that sort of thing over here. |

If Liverpool win the title Suarez deserves two medals.
His contribution has been outstanding.

No denying his talent, it's his character I'm questioning and whether he deserves to be rewarded for the way he conducts himself. |

Yes he deserves a medal, but he won't get player of the year because of his antics, on his day there is none better, just wish he would cut out the rolling about as if he and many other players who have been tackled or is that shot seem to do these days |

You may be quite correct... Thus far in his professional career, at least, he has consistently displayed many unsavoury attributes.
The optimist within me finds comfort in the idea that people can and do change.
As far as his potential winners medals, he's done quite a bit to earn it this season. |

I remember Real Madrid saying they did not sign Ronaldinhho because he was ugly that turned out well for them. Barcelona became the dominant team in Spain. |

You'd have to penalise half the players in the league though if you were going to look at who has ever taken a dive.
It's not nice but it's a feature in most games, it's rare you see someone stay on their feet if they might nick an undeserved spot-kick.
I do think when someone is as good as Suarez, why do it, you have so much talent but he is far, far from the only cheat, so it probably balances out.
Don't think you can single out one person as you think he's a slightly bigger cheat than the next man. |

Let's ignore Ashley young, Evra, nani and a few others in the northwest, and of course we are not allowed to say anything about John Terry or any of the Chelsea players that like to roll around.
Or the previously sacked Anelka, El Hadj Diouf or countless other nasty individuals that play.
There hasn't been a better forward in the prem than Suarez in the past three seasons IMO
And that includes Bale and Aguerro |

Every fan in the land would like Suarez in their team. Most clubs have at least one idiot in them. To say he cant have a medal is a bit childish.
I think if any of the top 4 had him in their squad this season they would win the league. Pity we didnt bid more than £40,000,001. |

well it come out that the release clause in his contract was 40mil... but liverpool and the owner just decided to ignore it ... if suarez had pushed it that it would have been interesting to see what would have happened.... |

IHe evidently works exceptionally hard to reach the level he does...
In that respect he deserves all he earns.
However he does seem to be an unsavoury human being.
If those two things were mutually exclusive, perhaps he shouldn't...
Ultimately, in a sporting sense, he and generally speaking, most athletes are judged by their performances and not their ethics, otherwise many 'great' champions in would be medal-less winners.
Therefore...everyone else gets one...so should Suarez |

suarez deserves a winners medal, because, funnily enough, he is a winner.
a winner will do anything to get an edge over an oponent.
whether it be diving, handballs, sneaky fouls, diving or whatever.
its only cheating when you get caught.
not only that, but outside of football, he is a clean living lad.
dont hear of him falling d*unk out of a nightclub
shagging his team mates birds, or sleeping with prostitutes
so, i would rather he got a medal than Terry, Giggs or Rooney, to name but a few |

Indeed.. Liverpool's management pretty much blagged their way out of it.
Worked out in the end, though we'll never know if he would have made the telling difference had he moved to the big smoke.. |

try Smalling, Drogba, Kevin Davies, Pedersen, Larson, Huth, Nani, Barton, even Gareth Bale was a big diver!!
Suarez gets ridiculed because people are jealous of his skill, hes the most talented player the Premiership has ever seen......you should watch more football and read less newspapers!!! |

I'm the opposite, personally I don't care about how they live their lives outside football. George Best springs to mind immediately, for me it doesn't detract from his grace and skill on the pitch.
I only care what goes on during play. They're no politicians trying to direct us as to how we should live our lives so why should I care about that? |

kind of see your point, but as these people are being held up as role models, then it has to be all encompassing, not just whts done on the pitch.
not only that, but off field problems can cause trouble on field.
apparently suarez is only so good this year because his wife told him she doesnt know the man that she sees playing football, and it made him realise things.
so, off field is just as important as on field. |

Fully agree - footballers or athletes in general aren't role models or examples on how to live ones life - they err like the rest of us - some more, some less.
Kudos to those that work hard to maximise their talents. That's as far as my praise tends to go for sports folk. |

People should actually enjoy watching him, hes worth the entrance fee just to see one of, if not the best player in the world live. |

That's the difference between us, I don't see them as role models and I don't think they go in to football to be role models. It's nothing more than a modern media phenomenon to deem they're role models instead of focussing on people who are noble examples of how to live.
Footballers are ordinary people who work to develop a skill that entertains us, they're not philanthropists or selfless charity workers although some will prove themselves to be more upstanding than others
Agree that a situation like John Terry is different as it infested the team. |

a winner will do anything to get an edge over an oponent.
whether it be diving, handballs, sneaky fouls, diving or whatever.
its only cheating when you get caught.
not only that, but outside of football, he is a clean living lad.
dont hear of him falling d*unk out of a nightclub
shagging his team mates birds, or sleeping with prostitutes
so, i would rather he got a medal than Terry, Giggs or Rooney, to name but a few" |

try Smalling, Drogba, Kevin Davies, Pedersen, Larson, Huth, Nani, Barton, even Gareth Bale was a big diver!!
Suarez gets ridiculed because people are jealous of his skill, hes the most talented player the Premiership has ever seen......you should watch more football and read less newspapers!!!" |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_st29mlQwU"
I'm not going to watch this as I know what it is and don't want to see it.
For the record I found Roy Keane a very unplesant, spiteful man on the pitch (and had no respect for what he did to Ireland either) I think I was usually the only fan who couldn't bring myself to sing Keano.
That said I'm not sure there is merit in dissecting every clubs players as the worst cheat (it's all shades of grey), invariably people take it too personally and it gets nasty. |

He was a vicious cunt but a winner probably one of the worst cunts on the pitch but I wouldn't deny him a medal which he deserved as he also played good football at times. |

That's exactly my point. If you strip him of medals then you have to look at every offence where the intent was to hurt someone. It probably happens every Saturday. I hate it but it's a fact.
Also I think of Zidane,(about get sentimental sorry) who I felt was like watching footballing poetry. I've never seen anyone quite like him and I would not want to let a foolish head-butt to the chest - wrong as it was - detract from a talent virtually unsurpassed. |

I'm not sure if call it greed.... I'm sure most people negotiate with their bosses to get the most money they can...and employees are likely to leave if a better offer comes along. They have short careers, the money is there. More power to them.
While fans continue to spend ...footballers will earn...and the true winners, the owners/shareholders, will be laughing all the way to the bank, which is probably owned by one of their friends.
It's just entertainment. |

Funnily enough Gary Neville said that.

I'm Man U and not sure Ronaldo was drummed out, kind of think he wanted to go to Real tbh! Lets face it, he's a glamour puss, Man U was never sexy enough to contain him. Said with tongue in cheek!
Brilliant to watch and yet a total pillock and not immune from diving.

Didn't look much like tickling him to me. More exacting revenge for what had happened in the past. Whether that has a place on the football pitch is another question. Players have previously admitted to having a little black book to refer to. One being a world cup winning centre half |

Suarez is a brilliant footballer, total idiot for past incidents for which he was rightly charged and rightly punished; those punishments are now passed. Suarez has been the best player in the Premier league this season. He has won two awards to back this up sadly no title to go with it it seems.
Having missed the first 6 games he has basically scored a goal a game.
He would improve every team in the league. |

erm, chelsea would have been at least 2 points worse off had they not had heating diving bastards.
citys forward have had their moments when they have 'made advantage' of contact.
in fact, i dont think there has been a team in the league that, at one time or another, hasnt tried to fool the referee.
just that because its suarez, its highlighted that little it more (and im not his biggest fan before anyone starts).
nothing is said of the instances at the beginning of the year when he stayed on his feet when having lumps kicked out of him |

I just love such ill thought out posts as this.
First off, I'll nail my colours to the mast and state that I'm a totally biased Liverpool fan of more than 40 years.
Dealing with your first point that LFC wouldn't be or finish 2nd if it wasn't for all the dodgy dives and penalties etc.Simply go and look at the video of LFC's so called dodgy penalties and dives from this season and at best you'll probably come up with one penalty, (Sturridge at Man U)and maybe a couple of gone down easily ones such as Sterling on one occasion. All the rest have been either clear handballs or trips where the skill and pace of LFC's attack have left the defender either simply outsmarted or unable to do anything else than commit the foul.
Then add up the penalties Liverpool didn't get which were clear such as Sturridge at Man U or Suarez at Chelsea courtesy of Eto's assault on him which readily spring to mind.
Liverpool's number of penalties has been down to the fact that they have been one of the most attack minded teams (along with City) in the league and have probably had the fastest and skillful with the ball at their feet players to deal with of any team.
As for how good someone like Toure is at City, well simply put he's fantastic just like many other City players which is why City are where they are right now.
People dislike Suarez for many reasons ranging from those who don't particularly have an interest in football disliking his actions against Evra and Ivanovich to those whom use those incidents as tools to hit him with and yet would have loved him to be in their team, ie the normal football fan approach of disliking the really good players in someone elses team while acknowledging in private that they truely are great players.
Suarez is one of the best players in the world, he was last season and the season before that too, but his "crimes" hid his skills and this year he's been unbelievably good. He doesn't make LFC a one man team but he certainly adds hugely to the mix thus making the sum of all parts of this LFC team add up to being an excellent team and well deserving of their final place in the table whether that be second or if fete conspires it first when the season closes on Sunday evening.
As for whether he deserves a medal, the answers simple. YES YES YES just as many other the other players mentioned in this thread deserved there's irrespective of the crimes they have committed during football matches and also irrespective of the feelings I have for the clubs they played for. |

Thoroughly football history people love to hate players at the top off the game. Since the premier league started every team that has won it has had a so called villain in their team.
Man U had Roy Keane & Ruud Van Nilstarooy.
Arsenal had Patrick Viera and Ribert Pires
Chelsea have John Terry , Ashley Cole and Didier Drogba
They all have one thing in common, they are winners and they deserve their medals.
Suarez probably won't get a medal this year but is he any worse than any of above ?
All football fans are bitter when it's not their team that are winning. Try supporting a shit team like me and you tend to be a bit less bias. |

Yaya is a good player but that goal you mention in your post was purely down to bad defending from Aston Villa. Not one of those defenders even attempted to get a tackle in? |

Saurez would walk into any team worldwide.
It's true,He has his foibles,
And there have been other brilliant performers in England this season.
Still,(like him or not)
he's stood head a shoulders above the rest.
So even though He may not be picking up a winners medal this season,
I'm sure he'll be picking up plenty,
with his next club. |
