Practical effects vs CGI

Just caught the last ten mins of a show about the great Ray Harryhausen.

His models for his characters were/are amazing.

Nowadays though, films seem too reliant on cgi.

I'd agree. To this day I think Bladerunner looks fresh and realistic (it was one of the last truly 'in camera effects' movies) whereas movies like The Matrix haven't aged well.

Cgi ruined Mama. They don't get the skin texture right or the eyes

I think the story and acting had more to do with it being shit.

cgi does look too perfect .. and cos i think oh its all just compuers i dismiis it without thinking of all the hard work put into it ... i love bladerunner too ... and a lot of newer films repeat harryhausen themes ... kali from the voyage of sinbad was copied nearly frame by frame as count duku in starwars

One of my fave PE moments was in American werewolf in London. Hands down the best transformation scenes ever put on film imo.
