Oh my Darling, oh my Darling

odds stacked against lol

£200bn to 1

Did i hear things correctly : "We do not and will not support the bailout fund for the Eurozone."

But it is then stated that our contribution will be £8bn.

The £8bn is only at risk in the event of a 100% default by a Eurozone member, other countries are at far greater a risk....ie the Germans at £31bn.

The chances of a 100% default?, virtually nil according to Channel 4 news.

So Darling's just spent another £8bn of our money that we haven't got to prop up a currency that has nothing to do with us?

I feel like going down town and dropping my wallet in the river for all the control I have over it!

Correct! The eurozone countries will have to fend for themselves without one euro be underwritten by the British tax payer.

However, we're part of the IMF and has such our contribution is £8b and this can be used.

I was really paying much attention to Darling and he did a lot of quick talking but I think that's what he said!

Acting as Guarantor for £8bn isn't quite the same as giving £8bn in an up front payment, much the same as the UK bank bail outs, very little money was actually given to most of the banks....it was just a promisy note in the event of the money being needed, which in almost all cases it wasn't needed.

Labour won't elect themselves a new leader - Clegg will, he brought about the resignation of the last one didn't he?

Old "I WON'T BE KINGMAKER" Cleggy!

I'm trusting that man less and less the longer this farce goes on.

We have two parties who did not win the election, pushing out the encumbent Prime Minister, because Kingy Cleggy don't like him, to elect yet another PM that hasn't faced the ballot box.

...A government without a leader being coerced by a man with fewer MPs than both Labour and the Conservatives, who claimed he will not be a kingmaker.

I'm getting a little tired of this worn out argument that we don't elect a Prime Minister. We do. We watched the Prime Ministerial candidates on the Prime Ministerial Debates (three of them, remember) explaining their respective parties policies on what they would do IF THEY WERE ELECTED AS PRIME MINSTER. (remember that bit? They all said it - "If I am elected Prime Minister" - apart from Brown, who begged to be given another chance to remain Prime Minister).

Funnily enough, I can't recall any of them saying - "Please elect Mr. Whoever as MP for Dunny-on-the-Wold cos he really really really needs a new bypass around his town to stop all the little bunny wunnies getting run over!"

Nope, didn't hear that mentioned once - they probably forgot due to nerves eh?

It was a perfectly reasonably question to ask. You said we don't vote for one man, I'm saying that we do, regardless oh who's name is on the ballot paper. I voted Tory but don't ask me the name of the man I actually voted for - it may as well have been bugs bunny for all I care - it was the national result I wanted. Cameron as PM. As that means the Tories are in government. That's what people see in a General Election and that's also why Local Elections are a very different affair. How is it that the Liberals have far more success at local elections than general elections?

Because in a local election the voters look at who the candidates are.

"You clearly vote for the party and not the man that leads it end of "

I vote for the guy I think will best serve British interests abroad as we live in a very small world now and what happens internationally is as equally important as what happens down the road. A local MP can only follow his national party's policies and if there is no cash for a bypass, he can't get one for his constituency. That's how it works, and if he tries to buck the trend he gets slapped down by the Whip at best, kicked out of the Party at worst. It is incredibly niave to think there is no link between local MPs and their national obligations to their party and their country.

My chance to protest at what I consider to be national issues is by using my vote at the local elections, but I know with 100% certainty that I do not want to use my vote at a General Election as a protest vote and potentially and unintentionally elect a party that I fundamentally disagree with.

In a weird twist of fate, both Cameron & Clegg have held meetings with their entire parliamentary parties, which includes many newly elected MPs that have absolutely no idea what happens in the corridors of power - and 'we' put them there. To decide the fate of a nation. How fucked up is that.

What if he gives his brother the 2nd in command job? The country run by two brothers? Hmmm I'm not liking the look of that at all, I hope neither of them get it.

With all due respect it's whether Labour Party members can see them as PM that matters, without being too sarcastic (honest) the Labour party won't be taking in the thoughts and wishes of 'Tory Boys'.....You would be right up against it if Johnson was made leader, he is so much stronger and so much a better speaker than Brown..

Interestingly, Brown promised that he would not speak to the Libdems until or unless talks with the Conservatives had broken down. Talks haven't broken down and Brown IS talking to the Libdems. He's gone back on his promise only five days after making it.

This is all beginning to look seedy now. Back room deals done in the dead of night between parties that didn't win the election and one of which is effectively leaderless. It has a bad smell about it..... and so much for doing what's best for Britain.

Is that what he said?, didn't he pledge to allow the Lib Dems to talk to the Tories first?

I doubt if Ed Balls would make the second round of voting, there are Two clear camps within the party....One is the Miliband camp (either one) and the other is the Johnson camp.

In other words the Milibands represent the 'Greys' and Johnson represents the 'Old School' or Left side of the party.

Is that what he said?, didn't he pledge to allow the Lib Dems to talk to the Tories first?"

No, his actual words were, "We would like the chance to do a deal if talks with the Conservatives failed," he then went on to say that "Mr Cameron and Mr Clegg should take "as much time as they feel necessary".

I don't blame Clegg for exploring every avenue open to him but it cannot be disputed that Brown, in a very carefully planned political swerve, made a promise that he had no intention of keeping, he further compounded that by promising to resign before the Labour Party Conference in September, some 20 weeks from now! Brown could be PM for another five months after promising to resign. This is a man clinging to power by his fingernails. I can envisage him clinging onto the door of No.10 as he his dragged out by his legs, screaming, "Let me stay! Please let me stay!"

To be fair we don't know who approached who for talks, it could just have easily been the Lib Dems that approached Labour...only they know that.

And regarding the Brown resigning in 20 weeks is concerned, he has pledged to be replaced as leader by the time of the Labour Conference in September....Labour have 20 weeks in order to arrange and plan a leadership contest, it will in all likelyhood be cut and dried long before September.

It doesn't mean the party will not hold a vote until September...it's a time frame.

That's what happens when no one party wins an election. Like it not, while the tories may have got more seats, they didn't get enough, meaning that more than half the population didn't vote for them. Ero, deals must be made.

Brown isn't clinging on to power, that's an absurd statement. He has already said he will step down, but these things take time. He in effect, cannot resign in the current situation as the country would be left without a PM and the queen would have to choose one.

Some sort of coalition must be agreed first and then the leadership change would need to happen afterwards. Yes behind closed doors there may be agreements on whom the Lib Dems would like, but thats not how it works. The Labour Party will go through it's own internal processes to elect someone. That won't necessarily be who Clegg would have preferred.

In terms of the new leader of the Labour Party, there are already several names being thrown into the hat, including David Milliband, Ed Balls, Alan Johnson, as well as the less well known John McDonnell and Jon Cruddas. I also wouldn't be suprise if Harrier Harmen ends up being a contender either.

Stacked supermarket shelves for two and a half years before becoming a postman.

sorry but bollocks!

yeah it is possible to work round havin a family if you can get suitable childcare and a job round it, but other times its nigh on impossible! im one of the lucky ones i had my family to watch mine, and thats when i was nightshift worker for others its not so easy not every job is 24 hrs rota and not everyone has good quality reliable affordable childcare and everyone wanted the benefits bill cut and single mothers etc into work so somethin had to give!

from what iv found most employers know nothin about flexible working and its the usual suspects that will grumble about someone asking for it x

That is why we elect them after all, can you imagine if Thatcher had been forced into an enquiry about why she forced the Falklands conflict?

So I can fully appreciate Johnsons stance on the enquiry.

Both labour and the Cons are trying not to look too desperate. Neither want PR as neither would be likely to have total control again. Its been more than 50 years since any party had 50% of the public vote for them.

It might even be a minority government or another election if nothing is agreed.

"Alan johnson it is then

Don't make any difference who runs Labour now, he'll be doing it from the opposition benches. "

Could be the best option for Labour, let the Lib Dems and the Tories form a coalition, then watch from the opposition benches as the house of cards comes crashing down....

When the ordinary people of this country start to suffer the effects of the inevitable cuts, interest rates start creeping up, people's homes are put at risk as unemployment spirals out of control.....while all the time the Tories are feathering the nests of the well heeled with a million pound threshold on inheritance tax, that all important hunting with dogs vote...

Then when we have people protesting on the streets just sweep in and pick up the pieces.

Sounds like the perfect time for a Blair style landslide....

"My god thatcher again !The Falklands war was totaly justified ! the argentines attacked ,British troops were fired on !

your only defence of labour is Thatcher ! how many years ago was she in power !

A Tory great , A great Brit !

What about the sell off's the miners Blah Blah

Gordy Blair and Labour let utillities be sold abroad , sold gold reserves for peanuts to buy the euro , lead us into 2 ujustified wars ,where our young are still being killed and maimed,They also lied about a referendum on europe !

Yet you still go on about Thatcher moronic!!!!!

A good policy all future immigrants into Britain to be settled in Torbay"

Anyone who served in the Falklands at the time will tell you the alternative version of the conflict, how Thatcher's government were pressed by the military high command to beef up the Falklands garrison months before the war.

There were very early calls for an additional 300-500 Royal Marines to be sent to the Falklands when American Intelligence Agencies warned the UK of impending Argentinian invasion.

In December 1981, four months before the conflict started General Galtieri took over in Argentina, it was at this point that Admiral Sir John Fieldhouse and Rear Admiral Sandy Woodward were pleading with Thatcher to send extra forces to the South Atlantic.

Thatcher was badly down in the polls so decided that a war would maybe save her skin at the ballot box.

If there had been an Iraqi War style enquiry at the time she would have been shown up for what she was.

But surely you see that the house of cards which you say will come crashing down was built because of Mr Blair's landslide? Oh so carefully ( not ) built over 13 year.

Obviously not.

Broon picked up Blairs mess. I actually feel sorry for Broon, he had a tough job.

I think its because he's Scottish and our neighbours over the wall never liked him for that.

WOW I thought you would come back with the Belgrano Incident .

That is some conspiracy theory rates on a par with the U.S Goverment blowing up the twin towers!

Thatcher is better than I ever thought and you must really admire her if you think she was able to do that .

All the armed forces serving in the Falklands Knew this ? You have spoken to them all? Not very good at keeping secrets these Americans !

Tell me Where did you google this one I need to have a read an a good laugh

Except in the case of RBS and Lloyds TSB who were given Billions .Thats why the goverment own over 80% of RBS and 75% of Lloyds TSB . RBS Failed to repay a lone of billions to H.M.gov borowwing more thus increasing Gov stake in bank. 175,000,000,000 was also printed by H.M.Gov to cover toxic loans thus sending pound into free fall , something like a 25% loss in the value of sterling

I'm confused now. Why are we posting about banks when this is the thread to discuss new leader for labour party?

Tell us exactly when there was a 25% loss in the value of sterling?

The rise in the US Dollar is almost entirely down to Obamas refusal to rule out drilling for oil in the Alaskan Oil Fields, as for the Euro... the strength of the Euro during 2008-2010 was down to vastly increased industrial production in former Eastern European nations now part of the EU.

Less EU industry going to the Far East and the Indian Sub Continent is the established and recognised reason for the current strength of the Euro.

The alternative to rescuing RBS and TSB would have been the government bailing out hundreds of thousands of mortgage loanees who had accounts with these banks, the government never lent these banks the money....they own most of the shares of these banks, which is a big difference.

Billions of Pounds of savings and pensions for UK citizens in these banks, at the end of the day there isn't any of the three main parties who wouldn't have rescued these banks.
