My car is making a strange noise. Its almost like a crunching noise and happens when I pull off, break, and sometimes when I turn right (yeah weird I know). It's loudest when I break. I'd assume it was the breaks, if it didn't happen when I pull off too. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? I can't get to a garage till the weekend

It all depends on how much your mechanic charges...
Driveshaft, it's more likely to be a CV joint that would more likely be a knocking rather than grinding/crunching sound. No one can diagnose it correctly online 100%. |

Have you checked to see if you've got a cyclist trapped under your front wheel arch? If so, they can be a bugger to shift - WD40 and a jet-wash should shift them |

Mine did once, slipped clean into the door. First time I'd driven it any reasonable distance, not been driving long, in a thunderstorm over the snake pass...
Cost about £20 to have it refitted. Could get the door card off but my mechanism was broken so it needed a bit more jiggling than i could manage |

could also be something simple like a stone jammed in the caliper or even a badly worn brake pad |

Not sure what the noise is, but a small word of warning. I worked with a guy that was arrested for pulling off in his car ! |

Defo what I'd look at first given its louder when the op breaks (sic). Not going to get louder if it's a cv joint. Pad down to the metal by the sounds of it. |

I echo what's been said above. Firstly have a look at the front discs, if they have any deep grooves or scoring then it's likely to be worn pads and discs. Next thing to check are the CV joints, I'd guess that the gater has split/cine off and it's lost all its grease. The noise should change when you turn the car on the move.
If it's neither of those then I'd start checking things like drive belts, including tensioners and pulleys and also things like wheel arch liners and suspension bushes. |

If you have alloy wheels you should be able too see them whites clearly through the spokes of the wheel, they're the metal discs behind the wheel. If you don't have alloys or they're a more solid design then it's a case of loosening the wheel nuts, jacking the car up, removing the wheel nuts and then popping the wheel off to check (do this on flat ground with the rear wheels chocked and DON'T get under the car unless it's on axle stands). |

I thought it was. But now I recognise it is probably part of the noise when pulling off, as it happens on rounderbouts after I've almost come to a stop before going on to it. It is a lot louder when I turn though, same crunching noise though, just louder |

Sounds very much like a CV joint to me. It stands for 'constant velocity' joint. It allows the car to steer and also have power delivered to the drive wheels at the same time (that's the layman's description). They should be packed with grease and protected by a rubber gater or boot. Often that boot becomes split or can come off, the joint then loses its grease and gets filled with dirt and grit, this wears the splines on the joint and it starts to slip and grind.
It's important to get it fixed asap as leaving it is an MOT failure and you can potentially lose drive to one wheel, which is dangerous. |
