10,000 steps a day

Is what we should be doing.
That to me sounds a hell of a lot. Id realistically only be doing about 1,000.
Ive installed an application on my phone and its like a pedometer.. since using it i've been doing around 4,000. Still quite a bit off the recommendation but im thrilled and pleased as punch with my efforts.
Can link FBook contacts too it, ive added my mum and now we get competitive lol
How many do you think you do a day?
btw the ap is called 'noom walk' and doesnt drain battery at all and constantly runs without you needing to 'start' it |

If I remember correctly there's about 2000 steps in a mile (on average), and most people walk a mile in around 18 or so minutes, so you'd be looking at around an hour and a half of walking each day, its not that difficult. |

I have been using a pedometer for about a month now. On an average day I manage 10,000 no problem and some days I go way over. I did have to work up to it though and on lazy days I won't get any where near it. |

Well you don't have to do it all at once, maybe you could start at something fairly easy like just 1 miles a day, then add five minutes each week? |

Thats what im doing,, only had the ap for 4 days now and me and my mum are going against each other
(i can see what shes done, and she can see mine) i know a lap around my street is approx 600 so just do several of those each day |

There is a set of steps near me 105 of them. They nearly killed me first time I did them but they nothing compared to the 193 steps at covent garden tube station. |

I have a pair and not too keen on them. The soles are rounded and very bouncy, you really have to concentrate on how you walk in them. I much rather my air nikes. |

I've recently bought some shape-ups, I find them rather comfy. Have any of you used shape-up trainers for two or three months say, and noticed a change in your in physique? |

Well done you... feel proud.. its a really good avhievement..
I since moving have started doing walking its so nice when the weather is good and meet many dog walkers along the way.. I sometimes borrow mums dog.
if I have the dog I walk about 6-8miles depending on the weather we normally are out for a good 3hours walking through the woods and fields..
today I walked the kids round the river to the park and this afternoon after a full roast dinner... we went for a family walk through the woods and around the farm.
Its been a lush day
keep going cute you will build it up and soon be walking miles xxxx |

i know its my own fault for being my size but its surprisingly difficult to walk.
i have no option to carry my entire weight and body mass until i lose the weight but its like trying to go for a walk and giving someone else a piggy back.. see if u can go for miles n miles then. |

I put on 3 1/2 stone in the last 6 months and I can barely carry myself around. I'm pretty much housebound at the moment as I can't even walk to the bus stop, so I can imagine it's not easy.
Baby steps - little & often & i'm sure you'll get there.

I too have a pedometer on my phone. I walk about six miles each weekend and yet to hit 10,000 steps. One day last week I was all over the place: 4,375 steps! You'd have to be Mo Farah to hit 10,000 daily! |

Totally agree... I have never hit 10,000 steps and I walk all day at work. I actually cant sit down in my job n its constant walking..
take baby steps and everytime you do one more step than the last its an achievement and you should be proud.

its not purely your own fault, you have underlying health issues as well but the main thing is you are doing something about it.
Dont beat yourself up about not being able to do all the things people say you should be able to do. i am the worst person for comparing myself to others and putting down my achievements but look where i am now....ok i'm not much lighter but yesterday i ran 3.11 miles in 48 minutes.
The only person you should compare yourself with is you! record your achievements each day and take time to look back over them each week/month etc. you will be amazed at how far you will improve in a short space of time. |

I think a lot of us over estimate how far we walk, even when counting paces. A 6ft tall person would have a stride of around 3ft so would cover 1760 for a mile. A 5ft person's stride would possibly be 20-30% less so would take over 2000 strides to the mile.
As you tire, your stride gets smaller so you take more steps. |

OMFG, I got caught out by them once! Had no idea and had never been there before.
The escalator was jam packed with a massive queue so we decided to take the stairs - It never ends! Got about halfway and began feeling claustrophobic, was ready to curl up and invite death. - Can't help but wonder what the proceedure would be for retrieving people on the stairwell if a fire broke out...

And in answer to the actual O.P, my Wii fit meter records just over 15,000 steps a day, but then again, I have a 1 mile walk between our house and the station, another 1/2 mile between the other end and work and then I'm on my feet all day in a retail job, so I guess it makes sense.
