I'm doing supply teaching at the moment and this week my pay took a whopping step backwards... apparently its because I now have to pay the employee and employer NI contributions. I get paid through an Umbrella company (wasn't really given a choice at the agency) which maybe means I'm self employed?
I talked to a few people today but they only confused me more... does anyone know a magical way around it? |

Self employed you need to get an accountant sorted so you pay as little tax as you need to. Sad to say it but its legal and most people who are self employed offset legitimate or fairly legitimate expenses. |

"Umbrella companies are now caught under new tax rules that treat agency workers as employees now since 6th - hence national insurance deducted now "
So should they be paying it? Am I being swizzled? |

Reggie said I should ditch the ISS and go self employed so my tax is less... but that seems scary and full of paperwork. Damn government. |

If you get a good accountant you won't need to do any paperwork at all. I haven't done any in fifteen years; besides signing off what he's prepared for me. |

I get paid at a set rate per hour, all N.I. and Income tax is deducted accordingly. |
