Clegg's statement just now reinforced what he said during the election: That the partry with the most seats and the highest % of the vote should run the country. He specifically mentioned the Conservatives and that's a clear indication that he will deal with Cameron and confirm his earlier statement of not working with Brown.
It appears Cameron is Prime Minister in all but name. |

Assuming he sticks to his word, or that he doesn't change his mind
Paddy Ashdown was just on and didn't sound as convinced he would do that if " Cameron rams cleggs throat " whatever that means ...although it could be fun I suppose |

up to a point... he is right.........
actually listen to what clegg said... he said the conservatives should get 1st dibs at trying to form a new government..... but cameron has a few problems...
1... he still needs partners... no way is that going to be the SNP in scotland or Plaid in wales.... he rode the wrong Unionist party in NI so partners may well be very very thin on the ground...
2... he is going to have to soften a lot of his positions on the cuts to get any partners... what concessions are they now going to have to make |

but he and his party are so steadfast against it... not as easy as that, as there are going to be a lot of tories in marginals that would lose seats big time.... |

the thing cameron will do is wait till he thinks he can win and call a snap election......
so i am guessing referendum on voting reform, and then go to the polls..... |

Would rather the Tories won with a majority, as much as I hate them, this has to be the worst possible outcome especially during a recession that’ll probably leave Britain hanging by a thread.
What I did notice is that the Conservatives seem to be the English party for the English people, noticed both Scotland and Wales have held a good Labour majority,
So on a more serious note, what does that really say about Britain as a whole? It’s clear to see by the constituencies, that it’s the more, shall we say, well off people who’ve voted Tory this time around, which won’t help them remove the label that they have always been the party for the rich.
Hopefully they’ve changed, but its looking very bleak for the foreseeable future.

seniors tories apparently are saying no to any sort of electorial reform...... and are apparently not happy with how the campaign was handled......
so... okay... i am going to put my cards on the table....
This isn't even a hung parliment anymore ..... This is a balance parliment...
just because of the way the seats have landed....this is so unique that this will never happen again....
the conservatives will be the largest party... but don't have enough to form the government on its own... there natural partners would be the unionists in NI.... but that still won't give them enough...
Labour and Lib Dem put together will not again have enough for a majority... but they will have several partners... SNP in scotland... Plaid in Wales... the lovely woman who won for the Greens in brighton......
if they all get together then it will possible be the labour person in charge of some sort of "centre-left" coalition....
either that.. or we go to court, they decide who gets 1st dibs at trying to form the government... and probably end up doing this again in october......
what do i think will happen?
Labour cabinet with some major Liberal faces
Brown will possibly resign.... whoever replaces him will be PM
Vince Cable possibly to be Chancellor (whoever is going to be chancellor isn't going to be popular anyway because of the cuts... so why not?)
Nick Clegg to be Foreign sec.... thats a safe bet where again they can't get into trouble...
Labour to fill all the other Cabinet Spots (health, defence, education, ect.......) |

my feeling is the following:
1 - Labour dumps Brown - gets in a Milliband or (my favourite) Mandelson
2 - they negotiate a deal with the Lib Dems and as many of the other small parties as they can get
3 they issue a budget plan giving FULL DETAILS of cuts
4 they go to the country again - the main plank being "we're telling it as it is - no-one else is doing tat" |

What people seem to forget is that the 4 Sinn Fein seats can be discounted as they cannot vote due to the fact that they refuse to swear allegiance to the Queen.
The Speaker cannot vote either except to cast a deciding vote should it be neccessary, and his three deputies, who are known as the Chairman of Ways and Means must also remain completely neutral and cannot vote either.
So this takes account of 8 non-voting members of parliament leaving a total of 642.
Labour can try and foster support from all the other parties put together but it would be a very shaky coalition.
Clegg's only route to power is via a coalition with Cameron. He has no choice. Cameron, on the other hand, may try and gather up the small independents but again, it would make for a rocky minority government.
It all points back to Clegg and his Liberal Democrats.
If Clegg wants real power in the future he MUST deal with Cameron. Cameron knows it and that puts Clegg in a good position for getting electoral reform which will unlock the door to true three-party politics in the UK. |

... but the problem is that Cameron is never going to get electoral reform past his own MP's to be able to offer it to Clegg....
the natural fit is some sort of "Labour - Lib dem - SNP - Plaid" centre left coalition...
brown will resign, cameron will lead a minority administration... if it is propped up by the NI unionists, and it feels like Northern Ireland is being spared the savage cuts the rest of the country seems will have to take... there will be a backlash... |

"... but the problem is that Cameron is never going to get electoral reform past his own MP's to be able to offer it to Clegg......"
Cameron will have to put on his Boss' hat and hit his MPs with some home truths. First past the post politics is dead now, this election has shown that the public want three-way party politics and Cameron has to face up to that fact.
Clegg also has to face facts, and that is he has 1/6 of the amount of MPs that the Conservatives has and he has limited power. If he wants real power he has to bide his time and deal with Cameron in the short term.
Cameron will know by now that if he doesn't reform and embrace PR then his dreams of No.10 will fade away very quickly as Clegg moves to Labour.
This is about getting tough with wavering MPs with small party agendas. There is no left and right wing politics anymore, they're all in it together in the centre with occassional swings out to right and left but they must come back to the centre and move forward from there. We've had enough of party agendas that detract from giving us the best deal possible, whoever is offering it. |

I think this is the perfect outcome that will force politicians to work together instead of putting party agendas ahead of what's best for the country.
All eyes on Nick. How phrophetic was it during the debates when both Brown and Cameron said, "Nick will agree with me on this." |

Dave the 1st is on record as saying that too much money goes to N.I., Wales & Scotland at the expense of the English already and he'd be very reluctant to give yet more money in return for their loyalty in a hung parliament. The Welsh want an extra £300m to start with and he won't agree to that, so I can't see him trying to form a govt with those parties. Far better to negotiate with one party than several.
His only option is to hammer out a deal with Clegg but Clegg has to be careful too because if he throws his toys out of the pram because Dave the 1st won't give him what he wants Clegg will have no option than to go to Labour and then Brown will have the upper hand as he'll know that the door to the Tories is closed and Clegg will have nowhere else to go. |

Having Libdems in a Tory cabinet will go a long way to placating those Toryphobes among us.
I predict that, in the main posts, Clegg will get Foreign Office, Cable for Chancellor.
Cameron has got to give ground on cabinet positions as Clegg isn't going to agree to policy changes without some sort of guarantee that Cameron won't go back on it. Cabinet posts would go a long way to building trust between the two parties and facilitate the transition period of learning how to work together given their very different and opposing politics. |

I think any Lib Dem cabinet posts in such a coalition would be lesser positions, cannot for one minute see Cable becoming Chancellor at the expense of Camerons best buddy George. |

If Cameron wants to wear the big hat and sit in the big chair then he has to learn about making ruthless cuts, and his own cabinet are not exempt from that.
If he can't then it's back to Brown & Co.
Cable comes across as a much better candidate for Chancellor but it is a weighty post within govt that ties in every department and the policies that Cameron wants them to follow. Maybe he won't give up the Chancellor's post to the Libs after all lol |

I can't see the Lib Dems wanting to go within a country mile of the Chancellor position.....the next such Chancellor may well end up being the most hated for donkeys years with the cuts he will have to implement.
I think they will be offered things like Education, Transport, or maybe the Ministry of silly walks!
Foreign Office, Works and Pensions, Home Office, Chancellor, etc. will have been promised away on the playing fields of Eton years ago.... |
